So, how am I gonna do it?? (VERY long!)

Here I go again..yet another 'project'. It's that time of year..I LOVE Halloween. I have made my costume & have won 1st place for 7 years in a row at one beach club-last year, Ernie & I took 1st & won $250 at one place & $100 at another.

My pea brain has exhausted all ideas for this year-that is until 2 nights ago as I was trying to get to sleep-it hit me.

I have gotten all of my supplies & ready to make this year's costume, but I have an idea of something I wanna do-but need suggestions.

I am going to be a stove-complete with an oven door which opens. My head will be the only thing sticking out from the back of the top of the stove-wearing a chef's hat & a neckscarf & long sleeved blouse. I'm making the stove by using the silver sun screens you put on your car's dash.Lightweight, somewhat pliable & edged with a cloth piping-perfect to join them together!

I'm known as the 'cookie lady' down at the beach-I bake cookies for many of the employees at 3 different places, during the year & at Xmas.

Anyhoo..I am putting an acrylic window on the oven door, using a cookie cooling rack as the oven rack and have a battery operated flicker lights to place in the oven. Got cool paper plates that look like 45 records-they so look like burners!-will cut out the centers & use for the stove burner-got real knobs from an appliance store to glue on the front.

Here's what I need help with....

I want to have the smell of gingerbread, wafting in the air somehow. I bought the oil that you put in an electric pot (?) on potpourri? I was thinking I could glue a small aluminum plate on one of the 'burners' and I also got a battery operated little fan-maybe that could kind of blow the scent around. What should I pour the oil over? Don't really want to use potpourri. OR..is there any otherproduct out there that I can use to spray me with or whatever- that has gingerbread smell?????

Oh-on the back of the stove it will say:"Nothin' says lovin' like cookies from the oven!" Ernie will be dressed in black & white & a bib apron, a potholder mitt and he will be opening the oven door & bring out individual bags of a gingerbread man cookie to pass out!

2 years ago I was a cow in a barn-he was the farmer. He had a milk pail that said "Got Milk?" on it & I made 12 dozen chocolate no bake cookies which were bagged with a saying "Moo...a cow pie for you!"

Sorry so long but wanted to set this up so you could see where I'm going with this.

We have had our plans foiled a bit. I had all of the materials to make Ernie a gingerbread man cookie as his costume but he has had 1 day surgery this past Wed & now has to have a heart cath on Oct 6th..won't know what that outcome will entail, so we will just have him don an apron, mask & hat, if he's able to participate.

What an inventive idea! I hope Ernie is doing well and can participate.
How about making a cookie out of felt,maybe sew a couple of layers together and stuff it lightly with batting or something like that.Pour the gingerbread scent inside.Place the cookie and the fan inside the oven.Since the screen is perforated the scent should permeate through it.
Please post a picture when you are done with it.

What a cute idea!

What about using ginger bread wax tarts in the pan? I've purchased some really cute ones on ebay & they really have a great scent that you can smell for some time without melting them.

re-reading, especially Karen & Bill (not that I don't appreciate everyone else--the bottle method really sounds interesting): I've gotten a little more courage reading Bill's final entry and understand much more clearly: essentially, plant what I have, 4" deep, in mostly perlite, water once, give heat & light. But Bill, Karen, anyone, do you think I'd actually be okay, cutting off a branch and make two cuttings? My 1st experience trying to grow a p. was with a Hawaiian Yellow (or was it Gold?). It was a disaster. I was told to try water rooting. Never rooting a Plumeria before, I do what I'm told. --usually when I water-root, anthing, I see roots within a few days or at the most a couple of weeks. And I keep clean water in the container. But this cutting sat & sat and did nothing. After a couple of months, there still was nothing. Since it didn't root, I was advised to take it out of the water; cut off the bottom to check for rot (the color inside was a beautiful white, so ok); soak it in hydrogen peroxide for a couple of hours, let dry overnight, dip the cut into a very dilute solution of bleach/water for good measure, then into rooting hormone and pot up in a sterile mix, setting the base 4" deep, watering once. I did all that. Poured a cup of water + superthrive around the stem, sat the container on a heating pad, and gave plenty of fluorescent light: both going 24/7. Within a few days, it leafed out. Since it couldn't have put out roots in a couple of days, I began misting the leaves on a daily basis, with tepid, tap-water. However, within two weeks the cutting went mushy. I checked; and, the entire inside was black. I suppose, even though I thought everything was sterile and the Hydrogen peroxide killed all germs, the cutting was attacked by some kind of fungus or mold, that must be in my house. If I divide this cutting, how do I keep the demise from happening to each of the new cuttings? (I do have some agricultural sulfur; also a copper, fungicide--as well as bleach and H2O4.) How long do I wait, for the wounds to heal before potting either cutting? Now, for my really, dumb (non-knowing about Plumeria neewbie) question: When growing flowers, usually the center is pinched out, so it will make more branches and more flowers. Making two cuttings out of this one, seems to be doing the opposite: fewer branches, fewer flowers. Thus, a branched plumeria will have more flowers and be more sought after. Why, then, is a single stemmed plumeria, preferable to one that is branched? Bob

Well, a cardboard box works. The place where I got my worms lines a small cardboard box with several layers of newspaper and then puts some worms/bedding into the box. Finally folding the newspaper over the top and sealing up the box. Carefull about shipping your live worms accross the north in winter. They could freeze if sitting in a freezing location too long. I don't think putting them in a plastic container is such a good idea, cardboard is insulating and breathable and should survive priority mail shipping with worms. The cardboard can also be placed directly into the buyers worm bin.

She sounds like my mother, who had narcissistic personality disorder; there's no such thing as a "normal relationship" with someone like this. You *have* to protect yourself because, to a narcissist, you, & everybody else in the universe, are just scenery to be chewed in the never-ending melodrama that is her life. Assuming that my impression is accurate: First thing you gotta do is get your hubs where he belongs- by your side, presenting a united front. Neither one of you should have any substantive conversations with her unless the other one is present. Second thing is to stop trying to solve everybody's problems & disengage- if she manipulates her grandfather into paying for a $90 hooker costume, her grandfather needs to be the one who tells her "no dice" & returns the costume. Third thing is to stop handing over control to get her to stop throwing tantrums/making scenes; no more returning home to get whatever she forgot, & keep a glass of water to dash in her face if she gets "hysterical". Fourth thing is to suspect everything she tells you; she's getting a lot of satisfaction from dramatic scenes at school, in the emergency room, etc. You might talk to her therapist about how to control the chaos, but don't count on ever being able to let your guard down. I love that room!! It sort of has this exotic appeal to it that speaks to me----and I like looking at those parrot pictures (you have my Eclectus in one of your prints btw) and then looking at the kudu---it causes me to pause and take it in more. The kudu painting proportionally balances out the other pics. I was in S. Africa this last Feb/March---it was one of the most breathtaking, amazing, beautiful places I have ever been and I wish that I could live there. And yes, I tried kudu at a traditional Braai (bbq). When I think of British colonial, I think of plain canvas fold-up seats and tents. So I think your lampshades work well. I would try simple, smart, canvas drapes. I think of clean, unpretentious lines. I think a silver canteen with silver cups might be a cool display sitting on a basket weave tray. We saw a lot of simple, clean-lined lanterns too. A zebra rug would definitely work. Also there are lots of decor items made with porcupine quills---we saw lots of that in SA. Lampshades, mirror frames, or even a bundle of quills in a vase. Pier One and Z Gallery have these items and kudu horns, etc. But remember, a small amount of this goes a long way. I like your side tables---that to me is the exact touch that you needed. That has a bit of the East Indian influence. I wouldn't be adding saris or brightly-hued silks or anything like that. I'll see if I can't dig up any pics.

Sounds like a memorable costume!

I don't have any suggestions to offer, I fear, except that I like the idea of a stuffed, scented cookie to spread the aroma around.

I like your rhyming saying - which is also somewhat memorable ... you might choose to use it on email messages to friends who attended those gatherings, for a while, on Christmas cards, etc.

I hope that Ernie is feeling well enough to really participate ... without incurring any hurtful dividends later. I hope that he'll pace himself and not attempt more than he can handle comfortably.

Lillipad's idea is great! I would take that idea and expand it to a tray of the cookies with the scent inside.

Hmmm, good idea about the felt scented gingerbread men, lilypad but...I cannot put them in the oven, as I am planning on making a sturdy shelf in there to hold all of the individually bagged gingerbreadmen cookies. Don't want to chance an odor permeating the zip locks, ya know? Perhaps & can do that & affix them to the sides of the stove to mimic refridge magnets? I do like kyliesgranny's idea about the tarts. I could put a pan on each 'burner' full of them, add some of the oil I bought & hope thatsmells enough.
OH! Someone this morning, told me that Avon has a spray out around this time of year-that smells like gingerbread. Anyone know about this? You spray it on your body.

I'm with kyliesgranny on the tarts...I make soy tarts/candles and the scent is wonderful even when it is not melted. I don't know how strong you want the aroma, but just having the tarts on you will throw out the scent when people are near you. I love your creative mind! Good luck placing on top in the contest.

Sounds like good fun. Hi Sharon. Waves. ;-] My first thought was cutting some cookies out of sponge, then painting the tops to look like cookies. Put the oil on bottom and they should smell for good long time. The felt sounds good too. Good luck

What a clever idea.... dab the oil behind your ears, on you wrists, behind your knees and on your temples! All "pulse points" and should give off a nice aroma!

Molasses is the other big ingredient.

HOLY SMOKES Tally! I can't imagine anyone paying those big bucks to smell of gingerbred! TEE HEE...thanks for the links. I've decided to combine some of the suggestions & buy some of the tarts to place in a foil pan on my 'stove' and add a piece of spong, soaked in the oil I have & place it under the tarts, plus I'll be dabbin' behind my ears, knees, etc. Thanks everyone. Linda..I have pics of several of the prize winning costumes-will take me a couple days to round them up. I'll see what I can find.
