Have food poisoning :o(

Was either the pickles or the ribs, but I suspect the pickles. They didn't have the usual taste.

All the classic symptoms.

Worst of all is the severe stomach cramps, and they hit me almost as soon as I walked out the restaurant door.

Have eased somewhat. Other symptoms are gone, for now.

Hope oatmeal I have ready to eat will help.

Been a miserable afternoon.

I think I had mentioned this last time you had food poisoning (at least I think it was you) but usually food poisoning takes 12-72 hours to kick in unless you were actually poisoned with poison!

Plus, it would be very unlikely pickles would cause food poisoning. The pickling process keeps bacteria from growing. It's probably either something you ate yesterday or the day before or, as I think I mentioned last time you got sick walking out the door right after eating, it sounds more like you may have a food allergy. I would consider what exactly you ate and see if you recall eating the same thing (spice, etc) last time you got sick.

I know you think you can taste the bad food but that's not usually the case with food poisoning.

It's just odd that you got two very fast acting food poisonings within a couple years... it really does sound more like an allergy. Did anyone else who ate with you or in the restaurant get sick? You should call and ask the restaurant. If by chance the pickles were that bad that it kicked in that quickly others would be getting sick too.

Hope you feel better and I know you probably don't like my opinion on the matter/post, but I really am just trying to be helpful.

carla35, I do appreciate your opionion and input.

    It's definitely NOT an allergy.

Last year, was Mexican, and it was the salsa. I was not the only one affected by this particular restaurant. And they were notified by the health department. This was not the first time regarding this particular restaurant.

I did a search, and food poisoning , like I felt, today, are normal.

    The cramps were so severe.

My oatmeal seems to have helped. Just got up for a "visit" and headed back to bed.

    No cramping now.

Fingers crossed, but search says the symptoms can last for a while.

Taos Trip: Beautiful, Wonderful . . . & Food Poisoning

    Q

I am glad to know FP can come on that quickly! I did not know. I had FP THREE times. 1st time was from pizza. Got so dehydrated I had to go to the ER. 2nd time was from a diner. My MIL and DH got it, too (they tried my food). It was horrible. One DD was 8 mos old, so I'd nurse her, and then throw up. Repeat, repeat. No one could help me with anything because they were sick too. Somehow I got better faster. We did report it to the co. health dept. and have never been back. 3rd time was at the fanciest restaurant in our little 'burb. The food was not even very good. I was disappointed, but ESP. disappointed once I got FP. Yuck. Anyway, your pics are gorgeous. I would love to see more. It seems like Taos (and NM in general) is just art all around. I have never been-- would love to go. I am so glad your DH is a doctor to help you through it. Many times I've wished I or my Dh could be one, esp. for our little ones.

Food grade o-rings and silicone lubricant

    Q

Home depot didn't have the stuff pictured above and I still haven't been able to find the right o-rings in my town, in the short term I'll probably buy seals from the Saeco dealer closest, and get a kit from McMaster0Carr for the future. In the end, for lubricant I got Dow-Corning 111 valve lubricant, seems ideal, cost me CDN$18 but it's a pretty big tube, should last me...forever, but it can also be used in electromechanical applications too. I have to admit, I did wonder about K-Y (blushes) but since it's water-soluble I figured it wouldn't be the best choice! Meantime I have to put up with caffeine withdrawal headaches or (shudder) drip/filter coffee... Here is a link that might be useful: Food grade silicone lubricant

    Got the flu....or food poisoning...

    Q

    Comments (19)
Glad you're feeling better and I doubt it's the flu for several reasons. But don't be too quick to condemn a food. Often this comes from something as simple as not washing hands, not properly cleaning utensils, or other equally simple reasons, including dirty grocery carts transfer the grungies from person to person. A concerted effort at frequently washing hands seems to have made a big improvement to my health over the past few decades. Doctors have said for a long time that hand washing does more than a flu shot. And after getting the flu after getting a flu shot last year confirms what I've thought and read about flu shots. They DO NOT prevent the flu. They CAN HELP in certain situations. And after the reaction I had to the shot to start with, I doubt I'll make that I'll get one again for a long time at least. Whenever you're sick, do what you have to to stay hydrated. Last time I was in the hospital being hydrated they wouldn't even let me have water. Only ice chips so I'd take it more slowly. But the sink in the room, well, I had me some ice water. Wish I would have had some popcicles! Actually it's not surprising that you're more chilly after not eating. Your body doesn't have the calories to burn to create more heat. One thing leads to another. These days I notice a chill more when I haven't eaten in a while. Take nutrition how you can get it, keep hydrated, get plenty of rest and you'll be back in short order. Good luck.

Hope you are feeling better...I have that problem when I eat a salad when eating out...I think it is the preservative on the veggies...can barely make it home for the "visits"...lol

I don't want you to go through this. I'm so sorry.

For my birthday one year a friends took me out to lunch.
Sneeze guard was down on salad bar. We went back to work and all of us were sick like you have described. Restaurant manager said others got sick as well but no explanation.
Our doctors told us that food poisoning comes on very quickly and goes away by the next day. Of course you need to rest after your body has been startled and shook up.
Tomorrow I will "check on you" and see how you look and feel. Poor thing. I hope you can sleep tightly tonight.

Oohhh, sorry to hear you're miserable Glenda. I'm like you, when I eat something that isn't right, it hit me fast.

Do you have someone to run and buy for you some Gatorate? If not, make a glass of water and mix in some salt and sugar. It's not a pleasant drink but you'd need it to replace lost body fluid. You definetely want to prevent from being dehydrated.

    Hope you feel better soon!

I'm sorry you are sick, Glenda! I got food poisoning at a restaurant on the way home from California once and I was sick within a few minutes after eating. That was one miserable ride home! Hope you are feeling much better now.

I've only had food poisoning once from bad mayo and it took a couple hours to take hold. It was non-stop vomiting for 48 hours to where I couldn't even keep water down. Eventually I passed out in a public bathroom and I was only semi-conscious for both days. It was awful.

I've never heard of instant food poisoning but there are so many different kinds that I'm sure it's possible depending on the type and whether it's bacteria or toxin, etc. There's also a huge range in severity from cramping to death. Scary stuff.

I hope you feel better. Being sick is awful.

Forgot to mention... if someone is getting Gatorate for you, avoid lemon flavor or any that contains citrus/acid. Gatorate has salt & sugar mixed in which is suitable for replacing body fluid.

Actually, my doctor told me that Gatorade and other drinks with sugar in them are the wrong thing to drink when you're dehydrated, as processing the sugar will dehydrate you further. Unless you're in extreme heat and sweating buckets, plain water is sufficient to rehydrate.

The same thing has happened on occasion to my sister-in-law right after eating out. She will be the only one who gets sick. She says it's an allergy to MSG.

    Hope you're feeling better today.

There is a food poisoning (Staph) that can occur within 30 minutes and it is caused by a common bacteria which is on the skin and in the nose of many people, even healthy ones. Hence the warning - always wash your hands and don't forget underneath your fingernails. Don't prepare food if you have any open cuts, eye or noise infections. The Staphylococcus aureus bacteria can make several different toxins that often cause food poisoning.

If you're a fairly health individual the symptoms are usually mild although unpleasant. Rest and drink fluids are the usual advice and their is medicine that you can take if your stomach is really riotous.

    Feel better soon Glenda.

I'm sorry you are ill, and hope you get better real soon. Hugs!

Hope you're feeling better. Hubby got food poisoning once after eating fried battered vegetables (sort of like Tempura). I react badly after eating greasy foods, once it was Beef Brisket at a friend's house. Came home and had diarrhea all night. I know, TMI. The point is, hope you're better. Pickles are cured with salt and vinegar, both of which would kill bacteria.

So sorry to hear this Glenda. I hope you feel better soon.

Hope you're feeling better by now--unfortunately, food poisoning can take up to a week to get over.

Whatever you do, becareful of ingesting sugar--it's a major irritant to the digestive tract and will make you feel worse. Unfortunately, while that's a medical fact, it hasn't been as widely disseminated as it should be.

Also, if this continues to happen to you? You might want to get checked for irritable bowel syndrome. Your symptoms are very like my husbands--sudden onset, right after eating (and more often than not, it does take a few hours for food poisoning to get a grip on you). Just be aware, keep track of your symptoms and if you get any more bouts, don't assume it's food poisoning, get checked to make sure you don't have something else that needs to be addressed.

    Good luck.

Gee, Glenda, I think I'd be very wary about eating anything from now on, if I were you. You should call your doctor.

When you're better, you should research your illness so it doesn't happen again. As others have suggested, the foods you suspect are not the usual suspects, and sudden onset is rather rare. You may have other issues you shouldn't let fester. You should call your doctor.

If it really is food borne illness, I think you have an ethical responsibility to be checked. People have differing reactions to pathogens, some mild, some severe or life threatening. If you are one of the lucky ones with a mild reaction, I think you should do your part to help prevent an outbreak. How mad would you be if you got sick after others had been sick and had not reported it, and your illness could have been avoided?

Let your doctor decide if the authorities should be notified, or if if it is something else. I hope you feel better.

All I ate was pork ribs, no sauce, and dill pickles served in a little paper cup. That's the way I eat my bbq. But only thing I noticed was the tanginess of the pickles, but I ate them.

On the way home, which was a 30 minute drive, it hit me, and I went downhill from there. COULD NOT EVEN WATCH THE ALABAMA game until the third quarter.

I'm up, slept late, it's almost 11. SORE all around my middle, including my back, and still a light every now and then cramps, but very light. No doubling over like yesterday, that just would not go away.

Thanks all for being kind, nice, and thoughtful.

    Gonna go slow today.

I hope that you are feeling better, Glenda. Maybe some clear broth, toast and some applesauce will help if you are feeling up to eating. You must have been really sick if you missed the Crimson Tide!

Were you throwing up a lot? I think, and I could be wrong, but I think food poisoning is mostly nausea/vomiting. I didn't have any "other" visits at all or any cramping when I had food poisoning.

Having such severe cramps so quickly tells me it might be something different. I would definitely call your doctor tomorrow even if you're feeling better cause that doesn't sound good.

I've actually gotten sick on pickles too. I think having too much vinegar can irritate the digestive tract.

Oh, yes, it can come on quickly. My DD had it last week end and it came on very quickly. Lasted a few hours b/c she hadn't eaten much. That's the worst--the stomach cramps and nausea and that vomiting--good grief!!! I hope you're much better today, Glenda.

    Symptoms
    By Mayo Clinic staff
Food poisoning symptoms vary with the source of contamination. Most types of food poisoning cause one or more of the following signs and symptoms:

    Nausea
    Vomiting
    Watery diarrhea
    Abdominal pain and cramps
    Fever
Signs and symptoms may start within hours after eating the contaminated food, or they may begin days or possibly even weeks later. Sickness caused by food poisoning generally lasts from one to 10 days.

    ==========================

    What I didn't experience was:
vomiting, but I was nauseated from the stomach cramps

    And no fever

    ------------------------------------

lol you seem really determined for it to be food poisoning. I do hope you will check out other possible causes as well. Having a reaction like that is not normal and it could very well be you and not the food.

In either case, whether it's food poisoning or IBS or a reaction or whatever it is, you were obviously miserable and that's what matters.

I hope you don't interpret people saying it may not be food poisoning as trying to prove you "wrong" but rather just trying to give you input to other potential and more serious causes. People are concerned about you, and brushing it off as bad pickles can hide something else.

I've only had food poisoning once from Taco Bell. For 2 days I was so sick with vomiting that I could hardly get out of bed. It's not often that I get sick.

    Hope you're feeling better, Glenda!

OK, I'm saying this sweetly and nicely and with a smile -- we may be too quick to indict a food or a place on this thread. It is not nearly as easy as we are making it out to be to identify a specific food or place as a culprit. That is what labs and analysis are for. It is very easy to make false assumptions and jump to false conclusions. Some pathogens take days or weeks to make us sick, just as Glenda's Mayo Clinic reference above says, thus making definite identification very difficult.
    Just sayin'.....

Well, I eat my main meal out daily. I know what restaurant serves what on what particular day. Been doing this forever.

    I'm a healthy person, normally.

    And today, I bounced back.

Took me a while to get the tires spinning. Had to go back to bed until after noon, but got dressed, and went out for brunch.

Ate carefully, for me: scrambled egg, dry raisin bread toast, dry grits.

Then I ate a few crackers.

It's now 4 hours almost since I've eaten: no cramps, etc.

    Hope hope hope!

yeah, I would say that I use the words "food poisoning" loosely when I got sick. I did not go to the Dr. But, I ate, I got sick. Upset stomach, food poisoning. Stomach virus, stomach flu. It doesn't matter how you term it, you are still sick. :)

    Glenda,

Many food intolerences/allergies present with the the same symptoms as your Mayo post lists for food poisoning. So your symptoms of bad cramping and diarreah "could" be a specific food sensitivity.

I have a food intolerences/allergy (depending on how you want to define). I get severe cramps and will be on the toilet for hours. I've never vomitted though my stomach of course felt bad. The first time it happened I was sure it was food poisoning; I even called the restaurant because it started the second I walked in the door coming home from a restaurant. I ran to the toilet when I walked in the door and was in there half the night. Although I was weak, I did feel better the next day. The next time it happened I was at my MIL's - can't blame her cooking- once I started to put 2 and 2 together. It was a food I used to eat all the time...just all of a sudden couldn't handle.

From what I understand, a difference between food poisoning and an intolerence/allergy is the time your symptoms present. Allergies/intolerences usually come about within an hour or so of eating and food poisonings within hours or days later (and most often others will get sick). You can also get a test on your stool done to rule in or out certain bacterias. Is there blood present?

There really is no way to know for sure what is going on unless you get a stool sample done, or there is an outbreak and the kitchen is tested.

Just saying.. if it happens again, you may want to keep track of what you ate. There could be a preservative in the rib rub or something similar you can't handle well.

And if it is a food poisoning, it was probably from something you ate the day before (and not preserved pickles). Of course you will often get sick and it will present right after eating...because you're stomach is full..just lke with a stomach virus- if you eat, you'll throw up. Here, if you eat and you have the bacteria in you it will make you have to run to the bathroom. But it doesn't necessarily make the last food you ate the culprit. That mores usually points to a food intolerance.

Glenda I hope you continue to improve. That was brave venturing out to eat! I've had similar instances but not quite as bad as yours. You will most likely never know the cause for sure.

Food and I get along quite well.

And then there is that rare occasion.

Hmmm, I live in Florida and you in Alabama but we both got sick last night after eating out. We went to Outback and didn't feel well about a half hour after getting home. DH and I both ate the same thing except I had salad with Ranch dressing and he had Outback soup. However, I really didn't feel great before we went out - felt really tired and kinda "off" tummy wise. After dinner,I felt nauseaous, chilled, crampy, achy all over. I fell asleep and slept all night -today I have felt blah all day - my back still hurts and this evening before dinner, I had the same feeling I did before dinner yesterday.

I think there is a stomach virus going around here - I have heard of several people who have had the same symptoms. Just hoping it goes away soon.

Glenda, Im glad you're better, but I hope you are wrong about why you were sick. Restaurants serving tainted food are serious and dangerous to the public. People who suffer from unrecognized food allergies pose a serious danger only to themselves. I still think you should discuss this with your doctor.

Glad you are feeling better Glenda! Take it easy for a few days.

As a retired restaurant owner I would want to know if there was an issue with a customer getting sick. If you thought the pickles had a funny taste, then you should definitly give them a call ASAP or call the health department on Monday.

I meant to add that reputation is valuable to a restaurant, and they want your return business. Be sure before you impugn.

Let's settle this point, please. Stop with the allergy argument. 8^) Been there, done that. Get well soon ms glenda. love, ms spider

    Food Poisoning Symptoms

Symptoms of food poisoning depend on the type of contaminant and the amount eaten. The symptoms can develop rapidly, within 30 minutes, or slowly, worsening over days to weeks. Most of the common contaminants cause:

    nausea

    vomiting

    diarrhea

    abdominal cramping

    fever

It baffles me that someone can post about being violently ill and when people offer suggestions of possible alternatives in the name of preventing future occurrences, it's treated like unwelcome advice. Should we just post "get better soon" messages?

Yes, it could have been food poisoning but those symptoms are also a million other things. There are a lot of people here with different experiences that are offering advice to consider and it's ALL in the name of trying to help Glenda. I don't understand the animosity or defensiveness.

For sure Glenda had food a food related problem. Ths problem can and does often happen within minutes and sometimes within hours. The stomach pains are horrible!
    Get well, Glenda!

Glenda, I'm just glad you are better. Food poisoning, spoiled restaurant food, stomach virus, allergy, whatever. Take it easy for a few days. Drink lots of liquids. The worst part of being sick is getting dehydrated, which does all kinds of bad things to our bodies, including brain fog. I wish you a good, healthy week.

Just because a particular food doesn't agree with you at a certain time doesn't mean it's food poisoning. It could simply mean that that particular food didn't agree with you at that time. Food poisoning is a serious charge and thrown around altogether too often. Did others who ate what you ate have the same problem? If so, yes, there may be something wrong with the food. If not, it's not food poisoning, just that your stomach/system didn't react to that food at that time. this isn't directed specifically to you, Glenda, but to people in general who automatically attribute an upset after eating something to food poisoning. That's just wrong.

Just like every bad cold/upset isn't the flu.

    Glad you're feeling better!

Glenda, Glenda, Glenda. You eat OUT all the time. It's gonna hit you eventually. Keep livin' large and get some Pepto and Imodium.

Yeah, you can get sick from pickles. The brine could be too weak, the jar/container could be contaminated if they take pickles out with a fork that already has other food on it, and so on.

Glad you are feeling better. I have had food poisoning, norwalk virus, and just plain old gastroenteritis. And it doesn't matter where you got it, it is NOT GOOD.

I think you would know how you normally feel and whether or not it was an allergy or sensitivity, especially since you have eaten BBQ and pickles there before.

    Dances.

I am guessing you are back to your same ole, same ole regular feeling person.

Or, I should say, that is what I hope.

So sorry you went through this. It feels so awful, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Hope you enjoy your food again.
