Did you get those sprouted potatoes as seed potatoes, or are they grocery store potatoes? If they're grocery store potatoes, then your results might be variable. I had a bag of sprouted grocery store potatoes once and thought that since they'd already sprouted, that whatever sprout-inhibitor the growers spray on them had worn off or quit working. I planted them. Some came up in a few weeks as they were expected to and some came up in several weeks, some came up after two or three months and some never came up at all. None of them grew as vigorously as potatoes planted from seed potatoes. Whatever sprout-inhibitor gets sprayed on grocery store potatoes, it doesn't stop working entirely just because the potatoes sprout. Given my experience, I'll never plant from grocery store potatoes again. Even if they sprout like crazy, I'll just toss them in the compost. I'd rather use my garden space for something more reliable. As for general potato advice, I've found it helpful to plant radishes on top of the potato hills. About the time the radishes are ready to pull, the potatoes are breaking through. This also keeps me from digging up a potato each week to see how they're doing. Otherwise, as shebear says, I drive myself nuts wondering.

I CANNOT believe you actually said this: "When was the last time you said anything nice to me????" but since you did, here's a real direct answer. It is alive and well, but no roots..Weird. How long does it take to root, if at all? That leaf looks so healthy still... Thanks.. Follow-Up Postings: RE: How long does it take to root one of these? I've rooted leaves in mix, that can take around a year. I've recently water rooted a stem, but didn't make note of the date I put it up. I took these pix, 'cause they show the round tuber AND the roots the plant develops. I really don't remember how long it took, but am guessing 9 months maybe, like from last Fall (I think I had accidentally broken the stem off the parent plant). and and So if you can grow some serious patience, you might end up w/ something like this. I think I'll take mine to my local Plant Society to pass around & show this development & then sell it at their plant sale table for a couple of bucks. ----------------------------------------------------------- RE: How long does it take to root one of these? I rooted some cuttings in water and some leaves in soil but it did take more than 6 months. I now have a lovely little plant about 4" tall. After you plant it in soil the cutting or leaf will eventually die off and a new shoot will emerge. --------------------- RE: How long does it take to root one of these? That plant is so cute. Sounds like they take as long as a pregnacy for a women, almost 9 months..lol Thanks for sharing. It tells me that my waiting is worth it, and that it just may continue to live. Yes I am encouraged. I didn't want to loose it I will post a pic just as soon as I see a root... Pattirose4, thanks for sharing also. Take care and stay happy!! Thank goodness the spring has arrived..:-) --------------------- RE: How long does it take to root one of these? punkinhead, Yes, I've noticed that. Around here, you can't give away summer squash in May or June because everyone has too much and is sick of it. In recent years I've gotten to where I can, dehydrate and freeze so much produce that we don't give much away, but this year I've been sending tomatoes and onions to 2 or 3 of Tim's coworkers, and to our son's coworkers at the fire station. One of the firefighters at his station is a real "foodie" and probably as close to being a gourmet chef as anyone we've ever known, so I try to send him something fresh from the garden every shift they work. He is thrilled beyond words to have truly fresh produce and our son's coworkers are rapidly learning there's a big difference between produce from the grocery store and produce from a garden. Yesterday morning, DS took in Red Norland and Red LaSoda potatoes that I dug a couple of weeks ago. Last night, DS sent me a text message after dinner about the superior flavor and 'tenderness' of the fresh potatoes. I should add that he's spoiled because we often have fresh produce obviously, but he's seeing it now through the eyes of folks for whom it is a pretty rare treat. Everyone else we know is on their own. My attitude is that if I can grow it, they can grow it! I will confess that when my local friends who garden call me and say "come get all the corn...or tomatoes....or purplehull peas....you want because we're tired of picking them", I usually don't go. After all, we garden in the same conditions, so if they're having a great year, I'm having a great year and I'm just as tired of harvesting and putting up the crops as they are. We also have some friends who don't seem to know what to do with fresh produce. They're so used to either eating out or cooking frozen stuff from boxes that they don't seem to want to cook fresh produce....or maybe they don't know how or just don't have time. Dawn

My Dad taught me a lot of things. He was a walking encyclopedia. He also made us learn by experience - some things good and somethings bad. LOL Like sniffing horseradish would clear your stuffy nose. LOL We always had a jar on hand just for that purpose. Every night at the dinner table he quizzed us on all kinds of things - some of them were riddles to make our brains work. My Mom taught me about baking. I also learned a lot from my older siblings. Again, some not so good things like sticking your tongue on icey cold metal. LOL I tell you I was tortured by my brothers at times. LOL My Scottish Grandma taught me how to knit and embroider and cross stitch. You rarely saw her without knitting needles in her hands making argyle socks for her "boys" and hats, mittens and sweaters for us kids. She made the most beautiful hand embroidered pillow cases and table cloths without a pattern. When she was too old to hold a sewing needle in her hand she gave me all her floss and hoops that were in a metal Scottish shortbread cookie tin. I still have it. My Dad's French stepmother, my Grandma H. taught me how to crochet. She made some wonderful lacey tableclothes and bed spreads and those pot holders that looked like dresses. I have all of her tiny metal crochet hooks somewhere in this house. My Scottish Grandfather taught me his love of fine things. Any time anyone came into his house he would take you over to my Grandma's china cabinet and show off the Royal Doulton character figurines, the toby jugs, the china tea cups and saucers, the crystal, He didn't have 2 cents to rub together and he was a drunk but he was proud that his wife through hard work could afford to buy beautiful things and he loved to show them off. Patti, speaking of metal ice cube trays, they bring back good memories. My Grandpa would make grape juice ice cubes and when we came to visit he would hand each of us kids a large purple cube wrapped in a napkin or paper towel to suck on. They were the best. My Grandma H would make pink "Junket" in hers. Anne
