You will be fine. That is what I did this year. I usually cut and let heal, but this year the rain has been unpredictable. We had chances of rain for several days in a row and we missed everyone. We were able to plant. I didn't cut potatoes, because of the rain.

I tilled in my rows and I sat on a bucket and cut potatoes, while my kids planted. I even cut them up and dropped them in the rows. They all came up great. I even had some early ones that sat for weeks before coming up and they didn't rot. You will be fine.

Did you get those sprouted potatoes as seed potatoes, or are they grocery store potatoes?

If they're grocery store potatoes, then your results might be variable. I had a bag of sprouted grocery store potatoes once and thought that since they'd already sprouted, that whatever sprout-inhibitor the growers spray on them had worn off or quit working. I planted them. Some came up in a few weeks as they were expected to and some came up in several weeks, some came up after two or three months and some never came up at all. None of them grew as vigorously as potatoes planted from seed potatoes.

Whatever sprout-inhibitor gets sprayed on grocery store potatoes, it doesn't stop working entirely just because the potatoes sprout. Given my experience, I'll never plant from grocery store potatoes again. Even if they sprout like crazy, I'll just toss them in the compost. I'd rather use my garden space for something more reliable.

As for general potato advice, I've found it helpful to plant radishes on top of the potato hills. About the time the radishes are ready to pull, the potatoes are breaking through. This also keeps me from digging up a potato each week to see how they're doing. Otherwise, as shebear says, I drive myself nuts wondering.

yes, grocery store pots. I did know that they are iffy, but opted to 'try it and see' anyway. Just didn't know if it would work. So I'll wait, and thanks for the info on the radishes!

Mine are doing well! I planted the cut potatoes right away and they put leaves upward and roots downward. They are in little cups, not planted out yet, but look very good! :-)

This is the first year I've tried to "cut my own". I didn't have a clue, so I just chunked them up with two or three eyes to each piece, and dropped them in the trench. Probably planted 30-40 running feet. It's been about 3 weeks and I got 100% success!

I did start with seed potatoes. FWIW, I have heard that if you want to use grocery store potatoes, buy "organic". Less chance the sprout-inhibitor was used.

Right, I never saw a need to let the cuts dry or 'heal over' before planting. Of course, most sources will recommend to do this and it seems part of the potato culture now. I've always had 100% success with just cutting and dropping right into the trench. I think there's much more risk in allowing the pieces to dry out too much if something happens and you can;t plant within a day or two. Dave

I've been just cutting and planting for 40 years with great success. On rare occasion I don't get a plant, but very rare. Lately, I've began pre-sprouting to about a half inch to be sure I have active eyes. I've also used store bought taters that have sprouted with no problem but usually use certified seed potatoes to prevent disease.

Well, no do not dig them up, I have never noticed a difference between plantinng fresh cut from those that were healed over...infact I think the unhealed do as well if not better, I always try to have the pieces around the 3 ounce (76 grams)size, for sure it is too much work to grow anything but seed potatoes, well except for those blue russian I am trying growing my own for atleast a few generations. The Norlans and a few Caribe are up this week, both have been in the ground and under remay (floating row cover) since march 30th when i last looked them in their three or four eyes.

1- you cut them if each cut has at least two eyes
2- smaller potatos i don't cut and plant as whole
3- Leting to heal after cuting is like insurance that you may not need it.
4- I have been planting store-bought potatoes for last couple of years. Have had no problem. But to make sure that they are not affected by sprout inhibitation treatment, I let them sprout and grow sprouts of about half of an inch. With organic potatoes you can be sure that they will sprout.
