what am I doing wrong on keyboard?

Every once in a while I accidentally hit something on my keyboard that messes with my typing. When I've done this, I can't type an apostrophy, quotation marks, or a question mark, because they come out as the letter "e" with variations of a French accent symbol above the letter. My DH and DS never have this happen to them, and neither can figure out what I'm inadvertently pressing on the keyboard that causes this to happen. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I thought I'd ask before the next time this happens, so I'll know how to fix it. Thanks.

Check to see if turning your Num Lock key on or off makes a difference. Num Lock is at the upper left of the small keypad on the right of your keyboard.

jodi, I don't have a small keypad to the right on my keyboard, and unlike my "Num Lock" key on the left of my keyboard, there is no key anywhere that says "Num Lock", so I'm still stumped : (

Tracy - just to add a bit - A. some plants are designed to sucker - they are trailers and should be grown multicrowned B. Some plants have the tendency to sucker when they are young - and if with a help of Fred's technique you keep removing the suckers as early as possible until they mature - you are home free. C. Some plants will sucker in your conditions no matter what - pass them to somebody else - very possibly they will behave better. D. All plants sucker when stressed - exactly as Fred explained. Try to baby them a bit - and if it doesn't help - you can call them category C - and get rid of them. TGIF Irina

Flora, is the weather the same all across UK ?. Yes, seysonn - the climate is pretty much the same all across the UK with far less variation than in the US. Remember, many of the States are larger than our entire country. Essentially the majority of the country can be treated as one zone. In fact we don't even use a zone concept here since everywhere is roughly the same. It is quite possible UK posters have no idea what the zone box is for and wouldn't know their zone anyway. I had to look mine up but although it says 8/9 that really only fits for the minimum temperatures and gives no comparison with a US 8/9. There is nowhere here where it is reliably hot enough to grow large healthy outdoor basil plants without some sort of protection. Outdoor plants are usually runty and often ill looking. Some years it will do OK but it is a gamble. This year we have had (and when I say we I mean the entire country), the coldest least sunny spring and early summer for 50 years. We also have pretty much universally reasonably good soils so nutrient problems are not a common issue, especially for Mediterranean herbs like basil. Although, the OP's zone is not at the head of the post he/she said they bought the plants at Homebase, which is a UK store, and fed them with Baby BIo, a UK product, so I then checked their location and it said UK. Also I can usually tell by the language whether a poster is US or UK based, although sometimes the Canadians confuse me a little ;-) Bottom line is - basil, like tomatoes, is not suited to outdoor culture in the UK. It can be done but it is a project and is often a failure. Plus the OP did not separate the multiple plants. No amount of tinkering with feeding will overcome this. They need to be separated and protected. This is my basil - indoors in a container.

Waited a few days, then proceeded to paint on a laytex ceiling paint. " You directly state you used an oil based sealer primer. Show us a picture of the labels on the cans. There must be some product incompatibility going on. Rough texture shouldn't appear out of nowhere. When there's a problem I always suspect that the first coats were not allowed to dry fully, esp. if the primer was oil. If it is uncured it will cause mischief with the finish coat, esp. flat latex. Putting more coats on top to affect a remedy actually makes it worse. I'd let it dry a good long time and see what happens. Another thought: you absolutely never put oil primer over new plaster- the caustic components turn the oil in the paint to soap and it peels right off. If the drywall job involved a large quantity of setting-type joint compound, the house is unheated, and the work was finished immediately before painting, then that's a possibility; the moisture still inside the not-fully-cured Durabond is reacting with the oil primer. I have some experience with this plant. You can try saving your dracaena by taking it out of the wet soil it's currently in, and letting the roots air out and dry out for about a day; then, repot it in new, well draining soil and give it very little water. I, too, think that every other day is much too often to water a dracaena. Let the soil dry out slightly between waterings - I'm thinking it'd only need watering maybe every 10-14 days, or even less frequent, depending on the soil. Best of luck!

My suggestion using the process of elimination. Press each F key once (F1. F2, F3, etc) and see if the problem is fixed. If not, press the F key again and move on to the next.

I must do something similar because sometimes when I type a apostrophe... everything I type afterwards will go into the search box at the bottom of my page! Very frustrating. Usually closing the window and opening a new one will fix the problem.

Every once in awhile, my letters don't capitalize. Rather than a hardware issue, I suspect there is something stuck under my left Shift key...perhaps a piece of black licorice, saltine cracker, glazed donut, plain (or Ranch) Dorito, hot Cheez It, supreme pizza, Honey Bunches of Oats cereal, wheat bread, candy corn, mini-Snickers, dried grape, sour cream and onion potato chip...

Rita, that's my finger missing the shift key and hitting the cap lock instead!

Hi Picky...

This is my very first time perusing this forum and your post caught my eye as I have recently had the same thing happen to me. I played around with the keyboard and found that if I press Control and Shift together, those funny characters will appear and pressing that same keystroke combination TWICE will revert your keyboard to "normal" again. HTH!

I have a Mac. To get the symbols you are getting, I simultaneously press the option key and the appropriate key for the option I want. All the symbols used in foreign languages, equations, copyrights, math, etc., are located on the Mac system in this manner. Every key on the keyboard has an "option" in it.

For example, if I press option n, I get an ÃÂ±, option e gets me ÃÂ©. You are probably accidentally pressing and holding the option key while you strike the letter you want.

On a Mac it's the Alt/option key. It's probably just the alt key on a PC.

Thank you all so much for your help. I've saved this page so I can try the suggestions you've given me, next time the problem occurs. If I still can't solve it, I'll consult the Computer Forum as suggested. Geez, I admit I usually only go on this forum and sometimes the Kitchen one and didn't even notice the Computer Forum.

okwriter, haha, maybe I need to look for U.F.O.'s (unidentified food objects) inside my keyboard ; )
