Yankee has published my Yale essay online

Some of you might remember that I attended my late husband's college reunion in the spring of 2007. I hesitated for a long time before accepting the invitation from his class, but I ended up having a wonderful time.

I wrote a personal essay about the experience, and Yankee magazine chose it to launch their new online feature, "Memories of New England." If you'd like to read it, you can find it here:

Susan, that touched my heart in a special way. My DH was a fine man, as was your Joe, and is well remembered by those students he taught, as Joe is remembered by his classmates.

We are blessed to have had these men as our soul mates.

I finally found it- and I wasn't even looking. I ran into the Shop Rite to pick up my Dad's fat free half n half and as I hurried through the express check out there was one copy sitting in the little rack. I grabbed it, checked the date, opened the index to double check and yep - I had the right one. Now I'm going to make a cup of English Breakfast tea and sit and read.

Take heart. The world is changing. I think we are improving in our ability to recognize our mutual humanity, not our differences. I'm (slightly) Pre-WWII. My MIL and an aunt-by-marriage never missed an opportunity to disparage black people. The aunt, a native of Missouri, had one sneering term, 'Nigras'. As a child, I couldn't understand why my DM shushed when I intended to help someone walking ahead of us on a Chicago street, calling out, "Mommy, that cleaning lady dropped her glove!" The only black women I knew were 'the help'. Public transit was filled with black faces coming out of the city to the suburbs in the mornings and returning to the city in the afternoon. I clearly remember driving from Chicago to Florida one winter as a child, passing chain gangs in Georgia -- white men on horseback with rifles, overseeing dozens of black men laboring in the sun.n chains. We once stayed overnight in an antebellum home with a Confederate flag at the door. The owner, in 'reduced circumstances', didn't try to contain her contempt for black people...or us Yankees. (The memory is like something out of Tennessee Williams!) I can't remember seeing people of color on TV until a groundbreaking drama, "Julia" introduced us to a family no different from any other, aside from being black. Now we have a wide variety of 'colors' and 'persuasions' -- in dramas, comedies, and, importantly, in positions of authority and trust. I'm not saying there isn't a LOT of room for change, but I'm encouraged. Could this horrible pandemic serve a larger purpose? Could we Love One Another?

Re mixing up homonyms, I think it has to do with the the muscle memory our fingers have. I've often typed up a post and saw nothing wrong with it. Then after posting I go back and see a wrong homonym. I had no conscious knowledge that I'd made that mistake at the time. But it was apparent on proofreading. Once I even typed "hour" instead of "our". I absolutely know the difference, but my auto-typing fingers apparently do not. There are certain words I seem to type that automatically get an "ing" added even though I have no conscious desire to put that on there. So I agree, it's probably more to do with proofreading and copy editing than anything else. And as far as typos, so many programs underscore the misspellings, you'd think they'd be easier to catch than they are...but then again we're dealing with autocorrect which decides it knows better than you do.

One thing I find scary about AI is the concept of the self-reinforcing loop. What I mean is, those computer-generated "CdM" images and those bland essays are now online next to the name "Charles de Mills". The next time the AI bot scans the web, this page will be fed into its training data. The next time someone asks about CdM, the bot might regurgitate this page (with a few words thesaurus-ized) as fact! So the truth can get ever more obscured. A co-worker who was present for the early days of PC use in the engineering trades shared this pithy saying about over-reliance on computer programs and reports: "Garbage in, gospel out." The results of a computer analysis can only be as good as the data that is fed in. And that is *if* the program itself does everything right. There are many ways for such things to go wrong. I think it's shameful for students to use these tools, as it will cripple their education. The first encounter with real world problems will expose how little they have learned. On top of those concerns, you have the possibility of deliberate misinformation. This has already come up a little bit with the prevalence of centralized search and social media sites like Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. But consider how repressive states could use these tools to spread false narratives, either through direct control or subversion of facts. The old saying, "Believe half of what you see, and none of what you hear" is getting ever more true.

Thanks, everyone, for those lovely comments. The essay is creating some ripples.......I've been receiving lots of very nice emails from Joe's classmates and other Yale people.

When I was notified that the essay was online, I thought, Oh, great. What lousy timing. I was feeling so bad about losing my cousin, and I couldn't get excited about the news. But your responses and those emails are a definite plus in my life right now, so perhaps the timing was good after all.

Your article was lovely to read and the love you and your husband shared must have been very special. I worked as a carer for people with Alzheimer's for 13yrs have some understanding of the tough times but also how precious are the memories of the good times. Your Joe must be so proud of you. Beth
