My story is in the current Woman's World

Thanks to all who checked back issues for me. I found my story in the current (November 4) issue last night. Glad I didn't miss it. It's on p. 42.

The store last night had only one copy left. I figure they sold out because of my story. ;-)

Sorry about the delay in responding! I didn't do a six week plan because for me I know I can't be on a diet every day for six weeks. I'm sure it is a great plan, and healthy too, but I couldn't sign up to it myself. The six day plan is body-type based, and my body type's plan consisted of the following: Breakfast - 3 oz lean protein (egg whites, fish, chix or turkey breast, etc); 1/2 cup berries or 1/2 grapefruit Lunch & Dinner - 2 oz lean protein; 1/2 cup cooked brown rice; 1-2 cups vegetables (must be low-starch, the book has a specific list, but I would severely limit starchy vegetables. I did like to add a small spoonful of corn to dishes for flair, and it still worked fine. 2 snacks - 3 oz lean protein; 1/2 cups greens Nighttime snack (if needed) - 1 cup berries or 1 grapefruit I'm not going to sugar coat it - I was hungry. George Thurmond says you won't be hungry, but I was, quite often. I dealt with it by deciding to do the diet Monday thru Friday, just heap it on the M-F grind, and then on the weekend I would be able to live it up. Boy did I look forward to the weekend! Well following were my methods: For breakfast I usually ate smoked salmon - I make my own, so it's not so high in sodium and chemicals. My husband, serendipitously, had just bought me a Zojirushi rice cooker that had a brown rice setting, and this proved indispensable. I got creative with my combinations of vegetables, rice, and protein - fried rice, ceviche & rice, grilled vegetables, etc etc - I spent a good chunk of time cooking and prepping my meals. As for the snacks, they were primarily green salad with chicken and balsamic vinegar. I work full time, and there were days in which I did not think I could just whip out a salad at snack time, so I would bring cucumber sticks and broccoli stalks, and sneak a few grape tomatoes in there. It was much easier to manage. It was quite inconvenient and I was hungry often, but I was willing to do all this as long as I was losing weight. I would lose almost a pound a day. I would put on a few on the weekends, but I netted 1-2 pounds a week. This carried on for many weeks until I had lost about eighteen pounds, then the weight stopped coming off as fast and I switched to another plan. But it was an excellent jump start for me! I was so food addicted that I could not go from that to "lifestyle change" in one day, so I think I needed this type of regimen. After I lost 30 pounds I told my doctor how I did it, and she said it was not a good way to do it because of the swing from diet to feast every week. I wished she would have listened instead of just comparing me to the "textbook" because after several years this was the only method that worked for me. As my weight loss progressed my balance increased, and I am much better now, but not done. Now I am 7 pounds from my goal, and I will get in a groove and eat intuitively and have good results (I mean maybe a pound in a week or less) without hunger, but then I get a little out of balance, maybe pack on a couple, then go back on a diet. One more thing - I've found for me to lose weight I can't be afraid of a few hunger pangs. When I am successfully eating intuitively, I am usually a little hungry, but in a weird way it's not unpleasant. Maybe I went a little far with it, but like I said I am still seeking my balance. Woman's world had a good article on it -- basically you wait until you are quite hungry to eat (not the first hunger pang), eat slow in order to feel the fullness response, and stop at a certain level of fullness. To maintain my weight for the long term this is my ultimate goal, but sometimes my husband wants to go out for Polish food and mmmmm, it's hard not to finish that plate of cheese pirogies.... Ladyvixen, we were in our 30's in 1985 when we bought our 1898 house. Looking back, we were very young. Neither my husband nor I had any skills or knowledge at all about how to work on houses. All we knew was that our house was nearly intact, was very inexpensive, and that we loved it. I had always wanted an old house, and had been buying things such as light fixtures, hardware, etc., for years before we bought the house. We bought the house "as is". Fortunately we were both employed and had no children. We had to hire almost everything done, and it needed a lot of work. We did not take a vacation for years. Then came a time of around a year or two that my husband was either unemployed or underemployed. During that time, the house just didn't get worked on. We didn't care that we lived in an unfinished house; in fact, I thought it was beautiful from day one. We have a corner in the dining room where all the little balls the cats play with end up, but you don't notice the slope otherwise. It has taken us over 25 years, and we are almost finished, but still have some work to do. We should have it finished by now, but are in our 60's now and do like to take a vacation now and then. Also we sometimes didn't have work done even when we had the money, because we were tired of the mess of having things torn up. We lived with a practically non-existent kitchen until about 2004. I said all along that this house was my dream house. People would look at me funny, but it was and still is my dream house. Don't let others talk you out of your dream. Make the decision based on what you want and what you think you can handle. If you think you can live with an unfinished house for years, go for it. If you have to have everything finished and perfect, you shouldn't buy an old house. I have the ablility to not even see the unfinished stuff until we get ready to do something about it. I meant this to be an encouragement to you, but reading back on it, maybe this will scare you because it has taken us so long. Don't let that scare you--you can do it faster than we did! You're young, you have a lateral attitude to your predicament which can only be admired. Move on to the life which you deserve. Having been in your shoes, I know that it dosen't pay to stick around. Your story reads a little too close to mine, right down to the smelly feet (I thought a small animal had died in the apartment) down to the lack of toilet training, in my case, it was the used sanitary napkins left on the sofa and tampons left by my computer. I married my husband with the understanding that I wanted to have nothing to do with his youngest daughter (the product a very short realtionship with a rather unstable woman). This was fine with him but every now and then she will pop up with the latest drama and this will cause a rift between us for at least a day or more. Mostly because he allows her to get way with more than I can ever remember getting away with or more than I would ever allow my own child to get away with. I too used to drag out the Lysol everytime my step daughter came to stay with us. She would leave her pubic hair in my shaver and things would sort of escalate from there, mostly because her father would blame me for over reacting and I would always be left without a leg to stand on. Logic would occassionally leave me thinking to myself, "If this (SD) were someone that I met on the street or out of the blue, she would be someone I would want nothing to do with. She is totally and absolutely everything I was brought up not to be." I'm sorry that there are children out there who suffer. I am adopted and I come from a broken home. I suffered four years of sexual abuse as a small child at the hands of a family relative but I never behaved the way Amy is behaving nor the way my own SD has behaved. And my adoptive parents weren't exactly saintly angels. Given their dues, they kept me in clean clothes and fed but life was far from perfect. I get mad when I read this stuff about 'poor kids'... I've always been more than decent to my step daughter and would have happily had her live with us except that she is so totally 'one of a kind' and I would have been doing myself a diservice to have had it any other way. She no doubt feels this from me but that is not my responsibility. I can't be the resucer when my heart isn't in it. You wrote that this is 'the end of your story' but really, I can't help feeling that this is 'the beginning of your story'.... a wonderful and happy story.... I wish you every joy, Aldra

Yes, I wrote it myself. It's fiction--a short story about a newspaper reporter. I've been a reporter, but that's where the resemblance ends.

Patti, this is my third one in WW, and so far I haven't been followed even once by the paparazzi! :-)

Ha--trust me, fame isn't on my To Do list. I think being famous must be a burden most of the time.

But I enjoy writing the stories . . . and I love those checks in the mail. :-)

LOL, Mcmann--the movie version would be about the length of a TV commercial. But I love the thought!

Here's how I'd cast it:

Tea Leone as Lynn (The poor girl needs some work to distract her from her divorce right now, plus she'd be great in the role.)

Christopher Meloni as Tim (Actually, he doesn't fit the part at all, but I really like looking at him.)

Sharon, I can't take credit for the yellow roses. They didn't consult me on that (or anything else!).

Homemaker, I appreciate the optimism in your question. :-)

The only other thing I have "out" right now is my essay about going to Yale last year. It's on Yankee magazine's website.

Nov. 4 issue is not out in the stores here yet. I pick up one yesterday and after I paid for it noticed that it was Oct. 27 issue. I will keep check and make sure I get the right issue.

Barb, I appreciate the thought, but if Walmart is any kind of distance from you, it's not worth an extra trip! Walmart is a 15-mile drive for me.

I finally found it- and I wasn't even looking. I ran into the Shop Rite to pick up my Dad's fat free half n half and as I hurried through the express check out there was one copy sitting in the little rack. I grabbed it, checked the date, opened the index to double check and yep - I had the right one.

Now I'm going to make a cup of English Breakfast tea and sit and read.
