I knew I was in for it when...

Claire was 18 months old and I decided to try her with a regular cup. She would just pour the milk onto her highchair tray so I gave her a sippy cup again. She took a long pull on the cup...and then spit the milk on her tray. (and on and on until it was empty) She had much fun splashing in it. I just sighed.

Lukki, such a great idea for a post - thank you! This post got me to finally set up a Flickr account to be able to post pics, somethinhg I've meant to do for a long time. So, here's my motley crew, who keep my life interesting, oh-so-busy and never, ever a 'normal day'. The matriarch is a Siamese mix, Annie, who at 20 years is still going strong, despite failing eyesight and being nearly stone deaf. I've had her since she adopted us at about 6 weeks old. My beloved Chow Chih Nu, who lost her battle with lymphoma cancer at 13 (one of the hardest times of my life) - 2 years later and I still miss her every day. She was a treasured member of the family for 13 years. In memory of Chih Nu, a year ago we adopted Tuscon, a BMC, rescued from the kill list from a high kill shelter - this is her at 4 mos, curled up in a cat bed. And a recent picture of her at 14 mos., in a rare calm moment (she's a tremendously high energy girl!) So high energy, in fact, we decided she needed a 'sister' to romp with, so a couple of months ago we adopted 4 mos old Sierra, a Chow pup. This is her doing her impersonation of a calm puppy - trust me, it's just an act! These two have to qualify as the world's worst garden dogs - it's amazing the damage they've done to my garden while romping at full speed! But, hey - they're also sweet, loving and true clowns that make me laugh daily, so I look at it this way - now there's no reason to not hire out the mulching, because there's nothing the yard guys can do to my plants that these two haven't already done! And then there's my Yellow Naped Amazon, Coqui - he's at the very center of the universe, just ask him and he'll confirm it! He's 10 years old now, and I've had him since he was 6 mos old - he really, truly does think he's in charge, and is often heard telling the pups to 'stop, stop' when they're barking or romping in the family room. The final furred/feathered member of the family is Aradia, my 16 year old Persian mix. It's impossible to take a good picture of her because she walks right up to the lens, even of a phone. She's been battling hyperthroidism for the past 2 years, and even with twice daily doses of thyroid meds has dropped from 16 lbs down to about 4.5 lbs. Think of the "Grisabella, the Glamour Cat' song from Cats and that's a good description of my poor Rady-girl. She knows she's still beautiful, and so do we. So, that's my merry band of hooligans - the Koi don't count in this because they stay nicely in their ponds and are only demanding at feeding time. :-)

Coda took out the screen door this weekend. She was running around outside while my boyfriend barbequed and it was just starting to get dark. I went inside, closing the screen behind me and she came barreling, full beagle speed, after me. There is almost a perfect face in the door and she ripped all the screen out of the bottom of the door, doing it. She knocked it so hard it flew open, so she could walk right through. I don't think she even realises the screen was there, since it wasn't anymore when she went to go inside. Since then she paws at any open door she sees to check that the strange 'forcefield' she hit, isn't there, LOL. I accidentally left the bag of cat treats on the counter after giving the cats some. I left the room to come back and find resin on the counter chewing the bag. As soon as she saw me, she took off. But she took the bag of treats with her, and hid them in a corner I could barely get to, and then took off to hide herself. Also, the new cat litter I bought this week, comes in a bag simmilar to that of the resealable cat food bags. Well, resin will get into any bag of food left laying around. Dog food, cat food, human food, etc. She was getting into the litter, and I could see it. So I watched (I should've scolded, but I knew it would end up funny! and the litter is safe!) her, she got a hole in it, stuck half her face in it, and came hauling out of the laundry room with litter stuck to her whole face. She then proceeded to do a little routine mimicing that of dogs after a bath.

Based upon what Prarie love wrote, at least some people do believe that hypothyroid-induced seizures are common. Being hypothyroid and having seizures are not necessarily related, though they certainly can be. Unfortunately being that most animals do not get regular annual (twice yearly for older pets) bloodwork when they are healthy, but most people will get bloodwork done when their pet has a seizure, it is often the case that low T4 is discovered right after an animal has a seizure. But the seizure itself can cause low T4, and once the animal's seizures are controlled the T4 returns to normal- or not if the animal is on phenobarbital. This is euthyroid sick syndrome- normally functioning thyroid that is temporarily suppressed due to another disease. Euthyroid sick syndrome can be caused by any disease, including a disease that causes seizures or the seizures themselves. It doesn't hurt to judiciously supplement thyroid hormone in an emergency while waiting for a full thyroid panel, which takes 1-2 weeks (having just gotten one for my dog) as long as you don't go overboard, as oversupplementing thyroid hormone can be cardiotoxic. But you are not really controlling the seizures, you are actually preventing further seizures. In other words, even if a dog's seizures are caused by hypothyroidism, giving thyroid hormone won't do anything to stop the current seizures (explaination follows). The full thyroid panel can sort out euthyroid sick syndrome from true hypothyroidism if it is done prior to starting phenobarb, usually. Some pets refuse to be classified, like my own dog. I did a LOT of reading on this lately because my pathologists were stumped when I asked how hypothyroidism, which causes decreased cellular activity, could possibly cause seziures, which are caused by increased cellular activity. I would have asked the neurologists, but they were in rounds and then left before I could catch them. But I did find the info myself, and it seems that hyperlipidemia (VERY high serum triglycerides and/or cholesterol) may lead to atherosclerosis and then ischemic encephalopathy (low oxygen to the brain) due to hemorrhage or thrombus, causing seizures or other CNS signs (called a stroke in people). There are many causes for hyperlipidemia, hypothyroidism is one. One study showed that dogs that had atherosclerosis were 51 times more likely to be hypothyroid than dogs who did not have artherosclerosis (they showed similar results for dogs with diabetes mellitus). Hyperlipidemia may also cause hypercoagulable syndrome where an animal throws clots, which can end up anywhere. Clinical signs are referrable to location of clot, so if a dog threw a clot into the brain, that would also cause ischemic encephalopathy and possible CNS signs or seizures. Of course, bloodwork would pick up hyperlipidemia (well, a complete panel would show both cholesterol and triglyceride levels; some in-house machines can't do this), so waiting for a thyroid panel just tells you why the hyperlipidemia is present. Because hyperlipidemia may have causes besides hypothyroidism, it is much more important to include cholesterol and triglycerides in a seizure work-up than to include thyroid testing. You can always go back for a cause of hyperlipidemia if needed. That said, you need to have a full thyroid panel done before a pet is placed on phenobarbital because that drug suppresses thyroid hormone in some animals. It does not always cause clinical disease and may not always need to be treated. Once on phenobarb, it is very difficult to impossible to sort out true hypothyroidism from phenobarb-induced thyroid suppression. Without clinical signs though, there doesn't seem to be a need for treatment. Atherosclerosis appears to be rare in dogs overall, but common in dogs with hypothyroidism and diabetes mellitus. The actual incidence is unknown because you need either MRI, CT, or a necropsy to diagnose it. Most people don't have access to MRI or CT for their pets either because of expense or because it isn't available. And most people refuse necropsy. The unfortunate part about atherosclerosis is that once it is in the brain, you can't get rid of it, even by treating the underlying cause. If you can get the animal to stop having seizures and if there isn't too much permanent damage and if you can treat the underlying cause, you may be able to prevent more seizures depending upon how much of the brain is affected by atherosclerosis. The damage is done, and you have to prevent further atherosclerosis by treating the disease. In some cases, the damage to the brain may be too great and the patient dies despite best efforts, even if the cause was "just" hypothyroidism. Controlling hypothyroidism would also prevent further seizures due to hypercoagulable states caused by hyperlipidemia, but the same "ifs" apply. This is why supplementing thyroid hormone when presented with a seizuring animal isn't really necessary, even if the seizures are caused by hypothyroidism. You do need to control the hypothyroidism, but that can wait until the animal stops seizing and you have at least a clue of whether or not the animal is actually hypothyroid. It appears that the reason hypothyroidism is a rare cause of seizures in dogs is that most cases of hypothyroidism are diagnosed and treated long before a patient develops clincally significant hyperlipidemia and subsequent atherosclerosis. It seems that mild hypothyroidism without clinical signs does not cause the a high degree of hyperlipidemia, so the risk of seizures in this case is very small. I guess if you ignore the clinical signs long enough and don't do screening bloodwork on a regular basis, a dog could have severe hypothyroidism and seizures. BTW, collies are prone to hyperlipidemia without hypothyroidism, so in the case of poor Shelby, testing cholesterol and triglycerides is much more important than thyroid testing. You have to know what is common in certain breeds and ages, otherwise you end up running every test in the book and that is a waste of time, money, and effort.

I am sure others here must have some stories to tell about their pets though - not just cats, could be dogs, birds, horses, llamas, hamsters, etc. How about it - any more pet stories or even photos ??????

I got in to it deep, when I bought my daughter a book for Easter. It was all about this little girl, that got a bunny for Easter.

She asked, if she could have one too.

Well, I thought I took the easy way out, when I replied:
if grandpa makes you a cage, you can have one.

Grandpa made her a cage of course, and she got a bunny.

Do you know, bunnies live for a LONG time?

A cat story...my baby.

When Foxy started having her medical problems back in early sprng, I took her off her dry food. She preferred the wet, anyway.

Well...she's doing great, has vet's amazed. So, I decided yesterfday to give her a little of her Purina dry food. Still had a bag of it.

I put a handful on a paper plate, out on the deck. She went for it immediately, and I left her there to enjoy the sunny day.

When I came back about an hour later, there was Foxy, lying down, stretched out in the sun... fast asleep. With her front paws cradling the empty plate and her head lying on it ...like a pillow.

She must have really enjoyed it.

Oklamoni, I don't know how long bunnies live, but my kids are both through college, grown & gone, and I'm still taking care of their dove. They live a long time too!

One year, for her birthday, my MIL gave my daughter a gift with a beautiful bow. She had slipped a couple of pencils into the bow. Roxanne (maybe four years old) grabbed the two pencils, pulled them off the package and threw them over her shoulder and said (loudly) "I don't need these." I was so embarassed!

My husband has an aunt who unfortunately has very large teeth and when she smiles a lot of gum shows. And after years of smoking they are also quite yellow. We went back home for a funeral and upon introducing my husband's aunt to my 4 year old daugther, my lovely daughter turned to me and asked quite loudly - Mom, why does her teeth look like a horse's?

I'm sure everyone in the funeral home heard. But the worst part is that the dear aunt probably thinks we've said that about her and that my daughter was only repeating it.

This year I raised 20 chickens to butcher. I spent 10 minutes typing out a cute story about butchering them and my DGD but, then decided that it may be too graphic to put out here. Growing up on a farm can get a person calloused to the realities of where our food comes from.

But here is my story.

DS was 4years old. It was February and very cold outside, but he wanted to go out anyway. I bundled him up and he went out to mosey around a bit. It wasn't too long til he was back and there he stood in the doorway holding a small dog. I asked where he got the dog and he very innocently told me the dog had followed him home. "He followed you home?" I said. "Yes, but I had to carry him part of the way."

Brownie was ours from that minute til her death about 8-10 years later.

When I was pregnant with DS I explained to DD who was going to be 2 when he was born that "daddy had a special seed he put into mommy and when the seed met the egg in mommy's uterus a baby was made". Fast forward one year. We are standing in a very long line,in a very crowded store back to school shopping for preschool. DD is watching her baby brother in the stroller and remarks in that very loud voice that young children tend to use at the worst possible moments..."mommy if you decide to grow another baby I want to watch daddy plant the seed next time".

When my youngest was just a toddler, she had a lisp. Having Asthma, playing outside was special with our heat and humidity.
S came running into the house all excited. "mommy, mommy! I know whys I nots a boy." I said "Oh you do". She replied, " It got boke off"!
I immediately went out side to find out where that bit of knowledge came from.
I tried to spell the words as she pronounced them as that was part of the cuteness. She outgrew the lisp but I never did find out her knowledge source.

With 3 cats there is always something....the latest.....

We are working on the fireplace, putting in a pellet insert. We started on it last weekend and the cats were fascinated. Monday evening we were sitting on the couch and Moose goes by, he loves to carry things around and he had something in his mouth....then we hear it "eek, eek, eek" and then the wings open......Moosie had a bat! Chas followed, bat eventually put in a bag, taken outside and released.

A dog story.

Snuffy, a poodle Schnauzer mix was never "my" dog. As a puppy, she first attached herself to oldest daughter. When she went off to college, Snuffy became daughter #2s shadow. When she went to college, Snuffy transferred her love to DH. Even when DH went off to work 200 miles away and was home only on weekends, she remained loyal to him. About 6 pm every Friday, Snuffy stationed herself by the window to wait for his 9 to 10 pm arrival.

When Snuffy was about 7 years old, she was diagnosed with diabetes. DH and I were living together full time again and Snuffy still considered DH her first love. Dh was at that time working 7 days a week and very long hours, so for a good 2 months I was the sole giver of her daily insulin shots. We had a routine where after I had her injection ready, I would hold it up where Snuff could see it and call her to me. She would back up between my legs and allow me to pull up the scruff of her neck skin and inject the insulin. She fully cooperated, giving no resistance. But, when I pulled the syringe back and released her, Snuff would quickly turn and bite at my hand.

On DH's first time at home at the right time for Snuffy's shot it was time for him to learn how to do the dirty deed. I gave him all the instructions and Snuffy went through the routine with him just as she always did for me...except when he withdrew the syringe she didn't bite him. Instead Snuffy walked the 10 feet across the room and did the usual, and bit me!. Snuffy never did become "my" dog and blamed me for those shots till she went over the rainbow bridge 6 years and thousands of insulin shots later. No matter whether DH or I gave Snuffy her shot, I was the receiver of her "ceremonial bite" if I was anywhere near.

Sorry this is so long.
First off, I was raised in MA and if you had cockroaches in your house you were the dirtiest person in the world. Fast forward many years and I am married and have a couple of kids. Husband was in the military so we moved a lot and lived in government housing whenever possible.

Mike and I had been separated for over a year due to his assignment. He got orders for Maryland and got quarters after several months of being there. The kids and I were in MA and he notified me that we finally had an apartment. I loaded up the kids and stuff and drove down arriving late in the evening.

He took us to the quarters and we opened the door and all these bugs went everywhere. The next door neighbor (4 units attached) came over to see what was going on since she didnÂt know the apartment had been rented and her husband was out in the field for a week. I asked her what they were and she said "cockroaches". I just about died..I had never seen one and just knew that the place was filthy. Anyway we had the exterminator come out within a day or so and finally got rid of the roaches.

So now six months later my folks come for a visit and all is fine no mention of roaches. They wanted to take our son, Shannon, home to MA with them for a week and I would go up there and get him and stay for a few days. He was so excited to go and was such a good boy.

One evening they took Shannon over to visit some friends of theirs (these people are all in their 50Âs, old to us at the time). They had coffee and were sitting around talkingÂ.I have this and I have that. Shannon pipes up "We have cockroaches at our house". My mother just about died!!!! She said she could have crawled under the floor with embarrassment.

We still laugh at this to this day. Kids say the darndest things.

My DD (13), after a trip to Las Vegas, thought it was really cool to watch people get a tattoo. They have a beautiful tattoo place inside one of the big hotels (Starlight Tattoos in Mandalay Bay). We stood outside and watched. We get home and she tells me she'd like a tattoo someday. I told her never and explained why I didn't think it was right. She continued to argue with me and I said, "When you leave this house and are on your own, you can do whatever you want- discussion over". Two days ago, I'm in her room and she has a large baggie full of money, coins, dollars. I asked her what she was raising money to buy and she says, "Oh that's my tattoo fund for when I'm on my own and leave to go to college!" I knew I was in for it then....

I knew I WAS in trouble when my 4 year old son after two days at preschool came home...puts his HANDS on his HIPS and Says...

Who the HE!! signed me up for this???? He's a junior in high school now and it hasn't gotten any better...

My next door neighbor has three grandsons, all toddlers. They come over about once a week and Grandpa babysits. All three were out in the driveway playting and shouting to each other "Sh*t" "Sh*t". Guees thay're not allowed to curse at home.

My favorite 6 year old son story.....One Friday after school, my son came home to tell me that they would not have to go to school the following Monday. I asked him where he heard that, and he said that the teacher told the class that it was a holiday. Being busy with another young one at home, I was not up-to-date on what holiday's were imminent. When I asked him which holiday it was, he replied...."Rose Hashman Day" (Rosh Hashanah)!! We still call it Rose Hashman Day every year....my son is now 29!!

This is one about my brother. When he was about 8 or so my mother caught him swearing. So she made a rule that he could only swear while in the bathtub. Well back then we took baths on Saturday night and you coulld hear my brother in there just swearing up a storm. lol As far as I know it cured him as we never heard another swear word out of him during the week.

When she was about three, we started calling our youngest child "Avalanche" because it seemed that wherever she went, things collapsed and fell down - store displays, book shelves, stacks of papers, etc.

She is 23 now, tall, willowy, beautiful, educated. Never clumsy, actually quite graceful and athletic. Well...This morning she left to teach English in S. Korea for a year, Last night, perhaps as her parting shot, she knocked over a plant her daddy and I received as a wedding present in 1968, just as we were about to sit down to dinner! All our "big kids" and their families (19 of us) were here to say farewell. At the sound of the crash, almost in unison the big kids called, "AVALANCHE!!!"

When the cloud of dirt/dust settled, you should have seen the look on her face. Every surface in two rooms was covered in black grit and we had to toss dinner. I have kept that plant alive for 40 years, given it away a hundred times to acquaintances and each of our kids as they married, sort of as a symbol of longevity.

As big as the mess was (actually, still is - I have to repot
the plant and clean the rooms) I'm oddly glad it happened. My little Avalanche is going to be gone for a year, and I am terribly sad about that.

DS#4. He's 6 now. He is a handful, not in mean or destructive way, just ornery and unpredictable. A free spirit! LOL.

When he was about 4, almost 5, he said to me out of the blue, "I was old when I was in prison." O...K... It was random, we weren't watching, talking, reading about anything to do with prison, just cooking dinner.

Couple weeks later he threw out, "I was very old when I died." Again, just as random. So I asked him when he died. He answered, with a tone that he thought I should have known this, "When I was in prison, remember?"

So I might really be in for it, maybe I'm raising a death row inmate reincarnated.

When my daughter Amber, now 23, was 6 we dropped her and our son off at a babysitter so we could run some errands and go to dinner. I need to mention, at that point in our life, we were out looking for a puppy to join our family.

DH and I go run our errands, one of which was to buy a new TV. After looking and comparing brands we settle on a nice 25" Sharp which we put in the back of our van. Since we wanted to go out to dinner, we threw a blanket over the box and went into a restaurant to eat.

After dinner we go back to get the kids. Amber gets into the back seat, buckles up and notices the blanket over something in the back. She asks what it is. I jokingly tell her it's our new dog whereupon she lifts the blanket, reads the writing, turns to me and with deadpan seriousness, says "oh, a Sharpai I see." I about busted a gut laughing.

I thought that was pretty darn clever for a 6 year old.

I knew I was in for it when my DD (at about age 3) said about her babysitter, "When Dorothy say, "How many times have I told you - her really don't want to know!' I knew then that she had counted and told Dorothy EXACTLY how many times she had told her........

(She's an attorney now. Does it surprise you? LOL)

I knew I was in for it when. . . my son who turns 35 on Tuesday. .Came home from school in the 1st grade one day telling me he had gotten into a fight with 2 other boys and had told them both "My MOM can beat both your dad's up". . . .I almost hated to tell his dad this. .haha. .

We knew we were in for it when DD, just hours old, was so annoyed at DH trying to video tape her that she FROWNED at him, turning her head to follow as he walked across the room ROFL! She finished making her statement by having a big muconium poop right in his hand. Tee hee!
