Some interesting programs by an emergency room physician

are on our national radio, with some new programs just starting this fall, after two or three years, earlier.

There has developed some interest in assisted suicide recently, especially in Quebec. Some folks here, having heard of a treatment for MS involving clearing substantially blocked veins in the neck, pioneered by a Dr. Zamboni in Italy, have gone to various countries to have it done, with some rather dramatic improvement for some ... but the MS Society and many of the mainstream doctors are looking down their nose at it. But a couple of provinces are planning to do some research on it.

The doc has a rather quirky, sprightly take on some of it, and I imagine that some of you would find his approach interesting, as well as informative.

I like to listen to PR when in the car, and anything medical is interesting to me. Wonder if Dr. Zamboni moonlights at the ice rink (just kidding, just kidding)

I was listening to PRInternational last week and there were alot of Canadian stories. There was a really sad story of a girl named Ashley Smith who committed suicide while incarcerated while the jailers watched. She was only 19, and had originally been incarcerated at the age of 15 or 16 for throwing apples at a postal worker.

What an interesting blog, thanks for posting it. And who'd have thought carotid blockage could be linked to MS!

I'm back, not that you've gotten bad service from morph. You could not be in better hands. I'm just more hands... Yes, the standard, $25 test is what you want at Logan Labs. When nothing seems to work, then the soil test usually provides the answer. And morph is the guy to read your soil test for you. I've been organic since 2002. My back yard is in half day sun and is too dense to mow. My front is in 90% filtered shade and mows easily, but would not be considered thin - at least not mostly. This is a lot of shade in the front. I realize you are committed to organics but maybe a couple pictures will help you stay on track. I collect these things for people like you. Here's the first one. That was taken by GW member mrmumbles back in 2011 to show the effect of using alfalfa pellets on his zoysia lawn. He applied the stuff in mid May and took the picture in mid June. You can easily see the effect. Density, color, and growth are all improved dramatically. Here is another picture taken by morph of his own lawn. I don't know why he doesn't use this picture more often. Maybe because he knows I use the heck out of it. That picture was taken in 2010. He will attribute the green of his yard to soil testing and improved chemistry, but you have to give credit to his organic program, too. He also has a different variety of grass and he waters differently. But the point is...WOW AREYOUFREAKINKIDDINME! Yes, you can have the yard of the month, month after month, on an organic program. What morph does to get that effect is to do things right. The cost of his lawn is not that much different from the cost of the neighbors' dead looking lawns. It's much more a matter of doing things right than spending more money.

If you are desperate, you can have a getting to know you night. This is where you hand out at random stickers, cards, bits of paper with orchid Genera Names written on them and arrange your society experts to meet at the appropriate places at the monthly benching to discuss culture etc. of the nominated Genera. I thought it would be a disaster but it always seems to go well and it is a way of getting Novice members to talk to the Open Class growers. Of course how you "Divide up the Benching" to get appropriate sized groups depends on the Number of people you get at a meeting. If you had more time you could arrange a lucky dip night ... that is where you buy an appropriate number of "your choice" mixed Genera Orchids from a reliable vendor. Then sell them to the members at or slightly below cost. Of course, you will need a swap table/point where members can meet to swap something they get that they do not love.

I was near deadline at the other library this afternoon. Haven't heard the result of the untrasound on the leg at haematology - they're trying to find whether they think that the clot originated there, or was generated in the lung, it seems. At an appointment today with the folks who did the injection of the foamy stuff into the near-surface vein in the leg to shrink it, just over a couple of weeks prior to the embolism, the doctor told son and me that, as an elective and non-essential procedure, that they'd do no more of them, just in case ... it seems that they deal with near-surface veins only (sort of like regular roads), that the deep veins in the legs are the main carriers (sort of like the freeway). The matter of the clotting could be life-threatening, and they do not want to take chances in that department ... so all that they can offer is compression. As I've been having trouble with the socks that I wash when I take them off at night not being fully dry in the rather chilly house by the second morning ... I ordered a third pair of knee-high pressure socks this morning. The doctor at that clinic has scheduled me for another ultrasound, as she wants to get a picture of what's going on in that leg. I'm to visit my regular doctor for (more or less) annual physical in a couple of weeks. So things seem to be going well. I've had no pain or discomfort since shortly after I left the emergency department of the hospital on the evening of the occurence: I'm a thankful patient. ole joyful

"...the DR was the one who ordered the follow up visit. Wasn't he supposed to at least know that? it wasn't like we set the appt." Possible scenario -- You know that the doctor asked for your relative to come back for a follow-up visit so that the effect of the medication change can be evaluated; and you made the follow-up appointment either before you left the office that day, or by phone shortly thereafter. I am doubting that the doctor himself scheduled the next appointment. It was more likely someone on his staff. The doctor actually has no knowledge as to whether or not you adhered to his request to make another appointment. Now, you're back at the doctor's office with your relative for that follow-up visit. The doctor, even if he has only taken a cursory glance at your relative's chart, knows that he requested that the patient return for a re-check, but he doesn't know if that is actually why the patient came in, or if the patient is there because he is having another issue that needs to be checked. So, the doctor asks the patient, "And what are you here for today?" Possible answers to the question are: "I'm here for a follow-up as you requested at the last visit." "Well, doc, I've been experiencing [fill in the blank] and wanted to see you about it." "I'm here for a follow-up as you requested, and I also wanted to ask you about [fill in the blank]." Whatever your relative responds lets the doctor know what's going on with the patient, which will dictate how he proceeds.

I am wondering if this is the doctor that I read about some time ago who cured his own wife of her MS. Do you know?

I firmly believe there are known cures not only for MS and for various forms of cancer, but just look at the financial loss all medical fields would experience if these things could be cured. It's sad to think that money is more important than human lives, but I honestly feel that is the case.

I think that I heard that it is, Linda.

This operation is available in several other countries, but not yet in Canada - gotta do a lot of research first.

I think that I heard that it appears to be useful for only a limited percentage of the total number of people who suffer from MS.

I've just visited our local Emergency Room twice in the last two days ...

... and am about to go back there tomorrow.

I'm thankful for them.

And I expect that the substantial number of tests will cost me zero, out-of-pocket.

Thankful for that, as well.

Pain awoke me in the night ... and they found blood clots in my lungs. I've been treated with blood thinners, and it's to be ongoing, for a while, at least.

It appears that I'm to be on rat poison for some time.

They tell me that even if I'm on it for 10 years...

... I won't start to resemble a rat.

Ed, I am so sorry to hear this. Is there anything that any of us can do for you? Are you at home or with your son?

I've been on rat poison for almost three and a half years.
So far I haven't grown a tail or am not covered with mouse like hair.

One thing, there are many things besides leafy veggies that effect the warfain. They had so much trouble adjusting dosages for me and so many frequent trips to the lab to have the blood tested, that I asked to monitor the food I ate and tabulate the Vitamin K content to help keep it level. They were sure I wouldn't keep doing it but I have for over 1 year now and it has made a huge difference. Vitamin K ( not Potassium) thickens the blood so works against the Warfarin. Mine got out of whack a awhile ago and I didn't know why. I learned that I had eaten quite a few strawberries when they were in season, along with california grapes, and cherry tomatoes and tomato juice. They all had salicylates and I was not aware that the salicylates thined the blood too.

If there is anything that I can do to help, even with this information, please give me a call.

Did you go to ER by ambulance? You will have to get the INR blood test done quite frequently for awhile, and then probably once a month, if you can keep it level. I don't know where you go, but they are really good at the new lab on Bradley and it might be closer to you than the hospital. If you go shortly before 10 in the morning you miss a lot of the rush of people going before work and the reports go out at 10:30 to the DR.s I understand.

My G.P. told me they only get 1 hour of training on the effects of foods. That is very very little. There are a lot of good sights on the net,and if you are able to be on the computer, I can give you some of them. I don't know if your computer is working or if you still were going to the library. You would be surprised the foods that make a difference.

The othe day the doc was talking about some projects of the drug companies where they more or less develop some illnesses to fit a drug that they've developed and are marketing.

Also referred to a big move now to provide a female equivalent of viagra ... sorry, that should be "Viagra" ... and they've been jawing about female sexual dysfunction.

(That's a hard one to swallow).
