The Kitchen Table

You California girls,

what do you know about babysitting prices? My GD is in Malibu at Pepperdine and has received some offers to babysit, which is something she's had LOTS of experience with. She's done a lot here,and spent the summer w/ my youngest daughter in the Dallas area working as her nanny. What's the going rate out there?

wow found a site care.com and had list of sitters in the malibu area..they had listed prices anywhere from $10 to $35 a hour! i assume the higher the price, it would include things like overnight or preparing food, ect...the site had pix of the sitters...what i'd do is get a resume together of past families, and i'd get bonded... (visiting local sherriff and being photographed and finger printed)

with all the rich and fameous in the area they'd want as much safety as possible..oh and a current red cross cpr card..
what a lucky gal to attend such a beautiful campus!

Thanks, all you guys. It's nice to have you validate my purchases, even though every purchase is personal and not to everyone's taste. Jane--I suppose I have to CONTINUE shopping to MAINTAIN my official status, right (ha ha)? Luvs--Yes, I think greens on the table, the plates, the candles--I can see it in my mind, but can I do it on my table? Betty--You did teach me well, you enablers! I'll have to do another lesson tomorrow at Tuesday Morning. We're heading for the big city for DH's tennis match and Tuesday Morning is on the way... Sandi--I hope I can do something worthy with the plates. I never really looked at stripes before until I bought some cheap Corelle at a rummage sale just to tide me over until we move and I unpack my dishes. They have stripes and they look really good on our card table LOL!! -Magpie

don't forget your sunscreen!!! my mother fresh from kansas (peaches and cream skin, back before sunscreen) had one of the worst sunburns and it was overcast...they had to take her to a dr... one of the best times was going out to a house a friend rented for the summer on pch...you really couldn't see much sand (one of the stilts kind) so it was like being on a boat...all ocean... have you anything else planned?

Odd man out here...From my experience... I'd prefer the cup. Granted I'm not sure of your instructions... but if I recall correctly, with the sticks there are some precautions...like don't let the urine splash up on the stick past a certain point, don't over saturate, but pee directly on for 5 seconds (what if your stream changes?),etc... You also may have to worry about the stick hitting toilet water without even knowing it and maybe deluting the results. And, I wouldn't doubt sometimes enough urine may not even hit the stick. I would just think the cup may be more precise and accurate. If there are no precautions, then the stick may be easier, but if there are and you need accuracy, I would suggest the cup.

Remember that a lot of the people who need sitters are NOT rich. Graduate students and staff people don't make a lot of money.

My DD lives in West Los Angeles. A lot of gals in her circle like and highly recommend this young married woman who charges $15 an hour. They feel that price is high, but she is bright, plays with the kids, very experienced, educated, etc. A lot of her friends have nannys too. When she needs a babysitter, this grandma drives up to enjoy the day or evening and to help out. And to be fair, a lot of her mom friends live there because that is where the job is, but they are struggling to make a go of it financially.

No matter what she does, remember one thing. NEVER, drive anywhere unless your doors are locked at all times. If she is going from a place to her home, and someone seems to follow her, have her pull in a lighted gas station etc. Yes crime is high. DD use to live and work in Malibu. Good luck to her.

Hmmm, we're in far N. California, but we pay about $12 per hour for both our kids (9 and 6). Down there would be a whole other story. :)
