You California girls,

what do you know about babysitting prices? My GD is in Malibu at Pepperdine and has received some offers to babysit, which is something she's had LOTS of experience with. She's done a lot here,and spent the summer w/ my youngest daughter in the Dallas area working as her nanny. What's the going rate out there?

wow found a site care.com and had list of sitters in the malibu area..they had listed prices anywhere from $10 to $35 a hour! i assume the higher the price, it would include things like overnight or preparing food, ect...the site had pix of the sitters...what i'd do is get a resume together of past families, and i'd get bonded... (visiting local sherriff and being photographed and finger printed)

with all the rich and fameous in the area they'd want as much safety as possible..oh and a current red cross cpr card..
what a lucky gal to attend such a beautiful campus!

Hi Memo: Oh, that airstream is my DREAM. How great is that? I'm here and I am fine. Just busy. How true and boy do I miss those In & Out burgers and fries. Yes I do those rolling stops here and almost got nailed a few times, don't miss those sig-alerts, but do understand moving farm equipment and road construction. Miss those great salad bars--here lettuce, tomatoes, cukes and toppings are on the bar. Do miss the mexican foods where here Taco Bell is considered the best.

For the life of me, I cannot remember what my mother-in-law gave me for Christmas. Shame! Shame! Shame! on me. I know they were thoughtful gifts and something I probably loved because that's the way she was, but I can't remember what they were. I say that because I know she loved me and threw me two surprise birthday parties (short time married to her son), baked the cakes herself. And, I know her son's second wife had a hard time with MIL and had to live in my shadow for 20-something years. She often told my daughter how much she cared for me. Anything I wanted, she saw to it. The first time she made creamed peas was because I said I wanted some. I feel so bad that I don't remember the specific Christmas gifts. Problem is it was so long ago that I was married, I guess. I think I fell second only to her own daughter, whom she nearly worshipped. I guess the moral of my story is that my MIL was a warm person, who made an impact on my heart in many ways all year. You are a thoughtful MIL to want to please your daughter-in-law at Christmas, and I admire you for wanting to make sure your gift is a nice one. Maybe begin with the simple things, like if she's a real coffee drinker, get her something exotic or a better coffee maker than she has. There's a gift idea for coffee drinkers on the board. I haven't read it yet, but I'm sure it's a nice idea. Something similar if she's a tea drinker. Or, something she doesn't normally do for herself, like a massage or day at the spa. A nice little getaway. How about a keepsake jewelry box with her name engraved? A cell phone if she doesn't have one, or a better one if she does. Something for her computer. Has she made any complaints of aches & pains? A foot, shoulder, or back massager.

Remember that a lot of the people who need sitters are NOT rich. Graduate students and staff people don't make a lot of money.

My DD lives in West Los Angeles. A lot of gals in her circle like and highly recommend this young married woman who charges $15 an hour. They feel that price is high, but she is bright, plays with the kids, very experienced, educated, etc. A lot of her friends have nannys too. When she needs a babysitter, this grandma drives up to enjoy the day or evening and to help out. And to be fair, a lot of her mom friends live there because that is where the job is, but they are struggling to make a go of it financially.

No matter what she does, remember one thing. NEVER, drive anywhere unless your doors are locked at all times. If she is going from a place to her home, and someone seems to follow her, have her pull in a lighted gas station etc. Yes crime is high. DD use to live and work in Malibu. Good luck to her.

Hmmm, we're in far N. California, but we pay about $12 per hour for both our kids (9 and 6). Down there would be a whole other story. :)
