Elder Beerman and Goodwill

I shopped at Elder Beerman this afternoon and got some good deals. As I was checking out, the cashier said she wanted to remind me of their special program going on now through Sept. 29th, where for every item of clothing you bring into the store OR to Goodwill, you get a 25% off coupon! Say what? I told her I had just dropped off a big bag of t-shirts to the Goodwill store on the way to EB. She said the guy should have given me the coupons, well all he asked is if I wanted the receipt. Dang! You know what she did? she gave me 25% off two of the sweaters I bought anyway, wasn't that nice of her? A Calvin Klein sweatshirt jacket thing she said wasn't included in the deal. I'm not sure why. Maybe because it wasn't on sale. Then she told me, "If I were you, I'd go right back over to Goodwill and get those coupons".

I made her repeat, "one coupon for every item of clothing". How can that be? I had alot of t-shirts in that bag! Well, I decided there wasn't really anything else I saw that I wanted to buy at EB, so passed on going back for the coupons. The lady also said she was going to phone Goodwill and remind them they should be offering them. I bet anything employees wouldn't cater to counting all the clothes in the bags right? Thought I'd pass the info along in case you shop EB.

Younkers is doing that here but only 20% off. Not sure if I will take advantage of it.

When are you coming to Florida? If you get a chance to pick up a thin inexpensive rain jacket (the kind that folds up into a little square), get one for each person. We will start getting those daily thunderstorms soon and they are so short its not worth leaving the park to wait it out. Fanny packs are great to use to keep your money, meds, or ID's in. If someone doesn't mind wearing a backpack, its great to have water and snacks in to save on buying them. Disney is one place that allows you to enter with stuff. Make sure to use the system where you schedule ahead of time the rides you want to go on. I can't recall whats its called but its like call ahead seating. Doesn't get you out of waiting in line totally but puts you ahead of those that don't do it. Get a map ahead of time and plot out the order you want to do the rides. Some people, if they are staying close, will be in the park at the opening time, then take the hottest part of the day off to rest and head back out in late afternoon. Thunderstorms can come up anytime but as I said, they are scattered for the most part and you can get indoors easily. It will be hot and humid here for you all - we are already into the mid 80's and even though its still nice in the morning, its hot by 10 or so. Sunscreen is a must, baby powder is also good for skin chaffing and its best to wear a shirt with a little sleeve in it part of the time - the tops of the shoulders will get burnt even if you use sunscreen and its most uncomfortable so pack a t shirt in the backpack to slip on in mid-day. Sorry, I know you didn't ask for advice but having lived in Florida and being at Disney where you see everyone burnt to a crisp, I thought I might offer some ideas. Hope you don't mind. Had to go to the drug store anyway, so whipped into Elder Beermans and headed for the CK clearance rack. Couldn't find the rack of clothes. Almost left, then asked the clerk if there was any chance she knew if they had the said top left in 2X. She said, "I think we still have those" and lead me right to them - there was the charcoal color, but in my size? She went through them and held up a 2X!, then she held up another 2X! I nearly hugged her. She was smiling. And I was a greedy puss and took BOTH of them at 60% off. LOL! Now I have three of the same top in the same color. Oh my. I should have left one for someone else. patti43 - I wonder if I should have Googled my local Elder Beermans instead of EB in general? Then I found two other shirts that I really liked. ellendi, I just got home and read your post. I have done that in the past as well, buy something in multiple colors because it fit. Only this CK top in bright red and orange just isn't me. Thanks again all and as I said I'll remember all the tips for stain removal (I've got three to practice on!) and work on the first top to see if I have any results.

Chilly and rainy here. It puts me in the mood for cooking. I might even figure out what we'll have for Thanksgiving. I assume everyone would prefer to have tasty stuff, not boring "diet" food, but l know how I get when something gets in my mind, so I have been avoiding thinking about it. . I keep trying not to buy any more seeds (new ones. Likely to geminate, unlike those seeds I sent you Nicole!), but I'm not succeeding. And they haven't even come out with next year's seeds. Well, Pinetree (SuperSeeds) sent me a catalog, but other sites still say "sold out". Is it time to see them blooming yet? I mean outside of my imagination. . Had a bowl of pork stew and watched to see who would be playing Austin and Buzzy on Jeopardy tomorrow. Any of them would've been good, so I was happy with the outcome. And Tom's final answer. It made me smile. I'm still smiling over it.

Good afternoon :-) Great find Nicole. DH brings not very exciting stuff home for me like fence material and things like that. Much appreciated but not very fancy even though it is free :-) he gets it on his job sites. When they are throwing stuff away they ask him if he wants it. I'm here having pizza with my husband. well sort of. he got a business call so I'm talking to you. My view outside the window is one of a traditional Vancouver gray rainy day. You can see me often with whole over layer of wool, hat, gloves, sweater, with a down vest,. Also a thin Merino wool underlayer which you can't see of course, and wool socks. I walk dogs as part of my living so wool keeps me warm even when I'm wet. I have to go and make a call about my accounting software today yuck. Then it's time to make chicken curry dinner. Happy Thursday all :-).

At our area Goodwills, they don't give a break on much - usually it's the bottom of the barrel junk and they end up sending it to be sold online.

Our Goodwill stores are so expensive you would be better off going to Target! And everything is worn out old junk. Seriously, I have no idea how they stay in business! It's like they think they have GOLD or something...gah! I realize they have bills to pay but who is going to pay a big price for some worn out old clothes. You can go to garage sales and people will give you a bag of clothes for a few dollars if you offer it!

Many people shop at Goodwill for other items besides clothing and as another means of donating. There are also men and women employed there who would not otherwise be able to work.
You used to be able to get great bargains on vintage items, but I know people who comb the Goodwills specifically for those.

The 25% off coupons are good towards clothing purchases at Elder Beerman.

One thing they still have cheap prices on are books. That is a bargain compared to the book store. But Cookbooks on the other hand are expensive...can't win for losin'.

Had to run an errand today and on the way dropped off a bag of sweaters to Goodwill. Told myself I didn't need the coupons, but as soon as she took the bag and proceeded to walk away it came out of my mouth, "Are you suppose to give coupons for Elder Beermans?" The girl didn't appear enthused but she said she didn't know for sure she'll ask her manager. Came back with four coupons. I asked her how they are figuring the amount of coupons and she just said "I don't know for sure, my manager just said to give you four". Ok, that'll do.

And sometimes one finds a generous soul in business that offers some guidance along that road.

Is Younkers a fairly widespread chain? Sue used to visit them in Des Moines and I gather from your post, jkayd, that you're a resident of Illinois.

Yes ole joyful, I do live in Illinois but only 10 miles from the Iowa border so I do 95% of my shopping in Iowa. I do wish my sales tax was going to the state of Illinois not Iowa but it's the closest shopping to me.

It sounds like the cashier might have been mistaken. I received something in the mail, and think it said donated items were to be brought to Elder Beerman in order to get the discount.

In reading a bit on line, that seems to be the case on many sites.

The Goodwill store by me sometimes runs bag sales. All you can stuff in a paper bag for ten bucks!

The Elder Beerman cashier was not mistaken. At least the Goodwill store in my area was to hand out coupons when you brought the donated clothing to the GW store. OR, bring the clothing into Elder Beerman and they would donate it to GW, giving you the coupons.

Re my last post. GW gave me four coupons.
