I suspect I'm in an older demographic: Sid Caesar/Your Show of Shows Omnibus Mr. Peepers You Are There

I love James Bond and always have. Well, I liked the old ones, which were far more fantasy. The new ones are too realistic and so, too violent for my taste. I don't mind seeing an explosion, but I don't want to see the body parts afterward, thanks anyway. I tend to like entertainment, I don't want to be upset or saddened, I don't want to have to think about it, I don't want it to have any socially redeeming value, I want everyone to live happily ever after. Always. I could watch James bond and know that he'd sleep with the girl and save the world and the rest was all just filler for the "good prevails and evil is destroyed" plot. I suppose that's why I seldom watch television. I can stand the sexual content far better than I can the gratuitous violence. I'd far rather my girls see a naked breast than the bullet that enters the skull, rips apart a face and causes the blood spatter on the wall. I can't watch any of the cop/lawyer dramas because I keep picking them apart. Nothing happens that easily or that fast or that simply, the behavior in court would never be allowed here, our crime labs take months for evidence to be reviewed and returned, even in serial murders. And who the heck has that fancy equipment anyway? Etc, etc. It's sort of like Grandma, chiding John Wayne that he couldn't possibly have a terry cloth towel out on the prairie, LOL. so, what's suitable? Not one darned thing on TV that I can think of beyond MythBusters and that type of show which has already been mentioned. Even Dirty Jobs will have an occasional show on artificially inseminating cows or something, and I suppose that is "sexual content" in some form, LOL. I guess he could watch Ace of Cakes, they're only weird and annoying, not naked and violent. Usually. Annie

I love Brothers & Sisters. I've always been a big Sally Fields fan and I think she is great in this show! I thought that Sara had decided to marry him and that's why she stopped him from marrying out of convenience. Maybe the mention again of the 4 weeks was just to throw us off course so that we'd be sure and tune in to see what happens. I think maybe she is going to have a Walker wedding and the comment was that she only has 4 weeks to get that done. That's just my thoughts....nothing definitive.

The only reason why I watch HGTV any more is if I'm channel surfing and need a breather for a couple of minutes. I don't need to watch anything for long because I know exactly what people will say ("needs updating," "stainless," "granite," "open concept") and because the end product is so predictible - and so predictibly soulless. Like someone said, it's the Target look. Plus, like some have mentioned, it's the lack of respect for perfectly good rooms. Oh, excuse me, perfectly good "spaces." I have seen a few shows in which original details, usually done in good materials and that have a certain amount of interest (not to mention, fit the style and period of the house) are ripped out in order to "update." I've seen it on both Love It or List It and on Property Brothers. What's both amusing and sad is that viewers are being spoonfed a bill of unpalatable goods. First, they're led to believe that every house they buy or live in needs "updating." That of course, costs money, money that they might not (probably do not) have to spend. I know - we all realize the whole point of these shows is to get people into stores for expensive things like countertops, cabinets, stainless steel whatevers; to get them to redo entire rooms, especially kitchens and bathrooms. My opinion: Closely related is that the shows lead people to believe there's no other way to decorate their houses. Like decordummy says, what about antiques? The irony is that if you flip through Architectural Digest, World of Interiors, Antiques & Fine Art, and other magazines like those, you'll see both antiques and ornamentation/anti-Target look. That's not to say there's nothing contemporary, but houses in those magazines show individuality, creativity, they reflect a personality and point of view - even when the look has been 100% created by the designer. The other amusing but not-really-funny aspect of the HGTV philosophy is the whole "open concept" thing. I sure hope first-time home buyers, particularly people who buy new houses, understand what's going on with that. What a scam, if you ask me. What a gift to home builders, and with the buyers paying the bill! Same square footage, but what's missing with those "open concept" houses? Doors, walls, moldings, hardware, trim, and all the other things that define actual rooms. Instead, people are paying the same amount per square foot for "spaces." I've wandered a little OT, but not entirely, I hope. Oh, and will someone please mail those property brothers a decent shaver?
