I almost forgot it is......

Hubs & my 56th anniversary today. Maybe it is because we've been lucky to have had so many, it's old hat now. We won't do anything special today, but if he is feeling up to it, we'll go out for dinner tomorrow night. I might even get a 1/2 pt of brandy so we can each have a couple light toddies.

Beautiful Amaryllis, mine got too tall this year also. Brrrrrrrrrr is right! Here in San Antonio we are expecting the coldest weather in 40 years. We might not get above freezing on Friday! Many of the plants I brought in a few weeks ago are sprouting new leaves. The first hard freeze snuck up on us and I accidentally left the Duranta out and thought it was dead, but now it's sprouting new leaves. Even one small Brug cutting that got left out is now sprouting from the bottom even though the top is shriveled. We'll be moving the Christmas lights over to the plants that are too big to bring in.

Tinker - I really respect your willingness to keep as much of the home as you could. It is absolutely beautiful and exactly the style I would choose as well. We're just finishing picking fixtures for our new addition and fell in love with that style of schoolhouse fixture you put in the kitchen. I love your kitchen! That would be a dream space for me. And the laundry - oh, the laundry! In theory, I agree with totsuka. I think that the bar has been raised in this country, and many people are putting upgrades in their kitchens and baths that aren't necessary. It would be silly to put granite countertops in our modest bungalow, but I think some home buyers expect it. HGTV or whatever has made us think that somehow cooking on certain surfaces is mandatory. I was struck when I lived in England how dingy that carpet often was and how home dwellers didn't seem to notice. I appreciate that sense that if it works it's okay even if it isn't current. Maybe I misread the aesthetic there, but I had the sense they had lower expectations, at least in my circles. Not everything had to be perfect, and people were used to living in older spaces. But having said that, what you did is extraordinary. And if you have the money, I think home improvement is one of the most satisfactory ways to spend your money, especially if you are committed to restoring rather than renovating.

We kept busy. We were out at the grocery store at 6 am....they had some door-crasher specials (grapefruit 4/$1, cartons of oj for $1.39, bananas for .29 lb and Kraft peanut butter for $2.88 for 1 kg). Hubby defrosted the freezer and organized it, and I washed the apartment halls and stairs. I also did 2 loads of wash and hung them out on the line, and some other piddly things. I made a casserole for dinner that BeeOhio posted in the casserole thread.....buffalo chicken and potatoes. I'll definitely make it again and tweak it a bit more.

That is one good looking chair! The photo shows the cat nearby....are you planning to use a towel or something to protect the chair? That gorgeous fabric looks like it could be quite a cat-hair magnet!!! I came home from work today and found a big pile of regurgitated cat food on my newly upholstered chair - thank goodness I had matching cat covers made to lay over the seats!!!

Thanks, KT friends. I just wonder how 56 years can go by so fast. It has been like a road trip, some hills to climb, some nice smooth valleys, a few 'flat tires' some refreshing stops and even acquired some souvenirs, (3 kids) I look at our wedding picture and wonder about that slim red haired groom (25) and that also slim dark brown haired pretty bride. He has his arm around her waist while they are cutting their wedding cake. ( I wish I could post the pic). It almost seems like yesterday when they were just starting their life together. We are so blessed to still have each other, although old age has taken it's toll, and I say that these days, between us, we make up one adequate person. LOL Thank you friends for the congrats and nice words. Dottie
