It's still a sore spot 1 1/2 years later!

Wildchild mentioned animal ER's in another thread and she is right that they are staffed by caring people. But once in awhile you meet that one person that's only in it for the money.

Our Golden Retriever, Quincy, began having seizures at the age of 8 months. He was on phenobarbital but occasionally he would need overnight vet care. In our area, we have half a dozen vet clinics but none which are staffed 24/7. During those times, we would have to take Quincy to Virginia to the IC unit.

His first visit there we were pleasantly surprised that his overnight bill was less than $300. For anyone not familiar, generally they will give you a high and low estimate of what the stay will be. Three times we were given a low estimate of $250 and a high estimate of $600. This covers the care and meds that they believe could be used through the night.

However, on his 4th visit, we left the clinic and took Quincy with us. The Vet on duty gave us a low estimate of $500 and high of $950. During the examination, the Vet kept saying, "not to jack your bill up, but....". Well, he jacked the bill up and then refused to come out and talk to us and explain his figures! We were furious!

On this occasion, we were expecting a nor'easter and was afraid to keep Quincy at home just in case something came up that we could not handle through the night, then not be able to drive the 60 miles to Virginia during the storm.

In the end, all was well that night but I have yet to forgive that Dr. And I would never go back there.

It's been 7 months since we had to put Quincy to sleep and we still grieve for him.
