Poor Bob. I know what it's like to worry about our kitties as I have 3!

I don't know if it will help you, but one of my cats had to have all his teeth removed at age 5 because of advanced gingivitis. I have to tell you it's like night and day now. He's so happy and joyful now and I've seen such an improvement. He's also able to eat dry food perfectly fine though I have them on 100% wet food for an unrelated problem. He has had no problems by having his teeth taken out other than his brothers pick on him since all he can do is "gum" them to inflict pain. :) It's really funny to watch him try to bite their necks when wrestling and having no effect whatsoever.

So I'm not sure if you were worried about his life without teeth but I just wanted to assure you he'll be fine. :)

My daughter also has a young cat who had to have all of his teeth removed. They've been out for close to two years now and he's doing just fine as well. You're little Bob will do good and should be back to his old self in no time. Sending a little prayer your way.

This is such a wonderful forum. I never heard of a cat having to have all its teeth removed. So great to have other people sharing their experiences. Good luck with your trip to Pittsburgh Lynn. I hope Bob is feeling like his young "old self" real soon.

Chi83 and jel48, that is so encouraging! I just hope and pray that this is what it really is and that the answer is this simple. The doc mentioned a biopsy and that sent me into a tailspin of worry. With the pain he isn't eating as he should, last night my husband went to get a drink out of the fridge and Bob walked over to him and began to cry. I ran to the store, got a jar of baby food and the poor little guy ate every bite of it.

I'd never heard of cats having their teeth out, so it's great that Chi83 and Jel wrote about their experiences!!! I guess when you think of it, they recuperate and live quite well with legs amputated, so teeth is just another "little" obstacle to overcome. I can see that their gums would harden and they'd be able to eat quite well.

Anyway, best of luck with your little Bob!! Hugs to you and your DH!

I mentioned that Bob was born with a headshake, Bob is actually short for (I know this probably seems rude!) Bobblehead.

Satine, basically it is just behavior. He is usually in my office with me all day, not now. And he isn't asking for treats, when he does get them he doesn't eat them, probably it hurts to do so. He's fearful, again that is pain related, he usually sleeps curled up with me every night, not doing it now. Some of the other signs are drooling, bleeding gums, bad breath....but he doesn't seem to have those.

Bless Bob's little heart, he's a handsome boy! I hope they get him all fixed up fast so he's back home and getting cuddled soon! Can you leave a slightly used t-shirt with him, to comfort him while he's away? Be sure to tell the staff that he's a lover-boy so they'll take extra special care of him.

My word, he's gorgeous! And I think his names are wonderful, both of them.

If it is his teeth, you'll see an immediate improvement in his demeanor and appetite. My cat who had the extractions was a very light eater before the surgery, or so I thought. Turns out the poor thing was just in extreme pain and couldn't eat well at all.

I literally brought him home from surgery, and he was still drugged and had a mouthful of stitches and he ran right for his food dish and started chowing down...so that showed how much of an immediate improvement it was. Now he eats like a champ and has a great appetite. He also purrs a lot more and his breath is much better, lol.

him too. Really hoping for good results at the vet.
If he ate baby food, maybe you could get him some cat's Ensure?
When our Mickey was on chemo meds and lost all appetite that mix
Helped him tremendously. It's from vet's office, but not every vet carries
it.

Sherry, I laughed at the thought of calling him and the neighbors all answering! Bob is an indoor boy.

Vetaal, he is 100% Maine Coon, thanks for noticing! He is very small, probably part of his physical challenges from birth. His brother, Moose, topes the 20# mark and can stand on his back legs and look onto the kitchen counter. And I made a note about the Ensure, thank you.

Thank you all for your kind words. They tell me that unless there are complications he will not be staying the night, he will come home with us tomorrow night. I've been a bawl baby all week, I can't wait till this is over and he is on the mend.

My kitty Lola, a Maine Coon mix, had resorptive lesions and had two teeth removed. I was told at the time that she would probably have more problems down the road. As soon as the two teeth were removed and she came home she went right to the food bowl. The difference was immediate and amazing. I know I would feel devastated too if she was facing losing all of her teeth but I think as soon as you see how much happier Bob is going to be free of pain you will know it was the right thing to do and Bob won't miss a beat.

I am curious about the head shaking - can you explain that to me? Since her teeth problem I notice every once in a while her head trembles slightly. It's rare but I have seen it a few times.

Sending prayers. I had a cat with Cerebrellar Hypoplasia, he staggered and bobbed his head. He was so cute, and instead of being friendly with my other 2 cats, his best pal was my dog Molly. We called him Suki, unfortunately he only lived to be 2 years old.

Our cat "Maddie" had all her teeth removed except for her small front 'smiley teeth', and she eats hard food, soft food even the dog's food when she can!

Made all the difference in the world, and made us $700 poorer, lol.

Yeah dental surgery is really expensive. I think mine was $1,200? Something like that but my vet is way overpriced. I was tempted to just grab some pliers and do it myself, haha. But it was worth it.

Bob will be fine!! One of ours had to have all of his teeth removed last Thursday because of stomatitis. 2 days later, he is back to normal already, eats constantly and plays and seems to feel really well. With stomatitis, you have to make sure there are no fragments left in any of the sockets, otherwise the inflammation and other problems will persist. So we took him to a veterinary dentist. It was very expensive, but a friend whose cat has the same problem took him to her regular vet for tooth removal, and kitty had all kinds of problems and took a long time to recover. So, it's worth it to go to a specialist.

Bob is beautiful! He remains in my thoughts and prayers.

Bobby did great, he had 3 teeth removed and had to have the previous site reopened and have roots and pieces of his jawbone scraped and cleaned. The dentist said that his bloodwork was wonderful, he is a very healthy cat and very well behaved. By the time we left the hospital he had charmed all of them and a few told us they were hoping we weren't coming back for him!

They had some trouble getting the iv established, he has very small veins so due to the prodding combined with the surgery he is on heavy duty antibiotics and of course, very strong painkillers. We got home and he had almost a full jar of baby food.

Renee, this was when Bob was born, when he first began to lift his head the breeder noticed that he had the head shake. They are not sure what happened or why but the vet said it could be lifelong or it might self correct. It was so bad that he had to be hand fed, the food quite literally flew out of his mouth. His little neck and shoulders were extremely muscular! He has outgrown it, he only shakes when he is under stress.

I had read up on that before we brought Bob home, Jannie, how good of you to give her a good home.

The folks at the specialty clinic truly are wonderful. The dentist spent well over an hour explaining everything to us and answering all our questions. This place was amazing to us, they have opmthamology, dermatology, orthopedics, surgical..... When we were leaving a woman with newborn guinea pigs (just born this afternoon) walked in, one had a hernia! You are right, it was pricey, we were close to $2,000. (gulp)

I don't know anything about this disease but would it be beneficial to take out all the teeth as a precautionary measure? If this is the second incident and it's progressive, it sounds like it might happen again. :( It would help both his suffering and your wallet significantly if you could prevent additional extractions, but again I don't know anything about this or if it's an option but it might be something to think about! As many people have said, cats can live just fine and sometimes even better without teeth!

Well I was coming here to offer some prayers and well wishes for Bob (also my DH's name) So I'm glad to hear he is on the mend already! I have also never heard of a cat losing all his teeth or a vet dentist, but hey my friend was once a chiropracter on animals!

Hope Bob has a speedy recovery and back to his usual self asap! You sound like a wonderful momma to him!
