Thinking of the old KT Traditions

I see that it is time again, to be thinking of Christmas card exchanges. I was looking for a recipe last night, and came across many that I recieved, in our card exchanges. Made me wonder about some of the names, as many no longer post here. Besides the recipes, we sent postcards showing something of our city or state. Pack rat that I am, I even have those. LOL Did you keep the recipes and cards, as well as the other exchange gifts from the early years?

I recently found all of my old postcards from the postcard exchanged and loved going through them again.

I still have all the postcards, the get well cards KT members sent to my 12 year old son when he broke his wrist a week before going to Japan to stay with friends (the trip had to be canceled). I still have the roach Glenda sent me, MoJo's mouse, a notecard with a photo Lori took, a pin cushion from Jenni and a book cover and cell phone holder Flamey made. That's all that comes to mind right now but I'm sure there is more.

I'm a keeper!! I have a few of the Get To Knows copied out from years ago...every now and then I'll pull it out and wonder what the heck happened to all those peeps...every Christmas I have ornaments that find a prominent spot on the tree from Christmas ornament exchanges...I've never participated in the card exchange cause I rarely even send cards anymore...

Madeyna, I remember the years where part of our living room held our DD's toy kitchen, her craft table, and baskets of toys--and I don't regret them a bit. Although it mightn't have been great 'design', it was wonderful to have them playing where we actually 'lived'. Enjoy your toy years! Baroo2--ha ha! What we do for our dogs... I have many photos 'ruined' by all the dog hair under the dining room chairs :-) ogrose--I feel like there used to be more 'forgiveness' for people being young and broke-- people used to think my home was 'something' because I had a few antiques and rugs that weren't made of plastick-y stuff. In grad school, I was really impressed by a classmate who had painted her walls non-white--it was impressive! Nowadays, I feel like blogs and Pinterest give young people unrealistic expectations of what they 'should' be able to do, because the bloggers don't always disclose how they are robbing Peter to pay Paul for their purchases. Mtnrdredux--I was more formal in my first home, too. Just what I was used to, growing up, and it never occurred to me to vary from it until later, when I fell for the Arts and Crafts period... Sandyponder--Oh, I hope I'll have more money and time to dedicate to it in my 50's. That would be one "side effect" of aging to look forward to! Luckygal, yes, some photos of 'homes' look more like displays these days. And I too use plants to keep things from looking sparse. Not as effective as actually having the right things, but definitely better than before I used them, and they do bring life to rooms. Fun2BHere--it's true, I treasure the few photos I have of the places I lived before I had kids--once we had kids, there were plenty of shots with our rooms at least as background, but the apartments where I lived alone--almost none or no photos :( dedtired: I think sites like Apartment Therapy make it easier to envision less formal styles than 'way back when'. All the home decor mags from when we were just starting out featured more formal looks--whether it was living rooms that looked like Ye Old Hunt Club or Queen Victoria's bedroom, I don't remember anything 'casual' until cottage style rolled around to the Better Homes and Gardens at my doctor's office! Snookums--oh, I wish I could block out the flamingo painting I had on the mantel for years!

Okay I've composed myself and now maybe I can gather my thoughts and try and express how much I LOVE YOUR KITCHEN! I drooled over your 114 photos and should have been taking notes as I went along so I could remember all of the many details that have me gaga. First of all, that view into your kitchen through the archway is magnificent. Well planned. I can tell so much was well planned and so thought out. Kudos to you and your team of wizards that created this dream kitchen. The back splash came out fantastic! We haven't done ours yet but I still have my eye on that manufacturer (because of you) and I know I have a photo of it and the name of it on the desk top of my other computer to remind me when we're ready. The colors of the backsplash, cabinets (oooooh the cabinets are such a gorgeous color!) counters and flooring go so very well together. Love the depth and warmth of colors! And your pendants are stunning. I love the color and texture of the glass. Again they go so well with everything else you picked . . . blending into this warm, inviting blend of kitchen happiness. Now that chandelier . . . I'm mad at you!!!! I didn't see that one when I was fervently searching for my perfect chandy. NOW I WANT THAT ONE!!!! Mine just has lost it's appeal. Yours would be perfect in my space. If you get tired of it and want to switch on and off with mine I'd be very open to the idea, lol. Seriously, it is just lovely. The view looking up is especially lovely. I bet you're in heaven. What have I forgot to gush about in this moment of bliss. Oh, you're pantry came out so fantastic . . . so functional too. I love having my pantry goods on not so deep shelves so things don't get lost in the back. It looks like your shelves are just right . . . you can fit so much. Is that where you keep your coffee maker and other small appliances? Do you use them from the pantry? Are you loving cooking in your new kitchen? It looks functional and organized in addition to being beautiful. Oh and the ceiling . . . wow. You and Eliz certainly know how to treat a ceiling!! I love the architectural design of the whole thing!! It's amazing really. The bead boarding is a perfect touch. The color is perfect. I'm so happy for you and your family. Now live a long, long life, cook lots of incredible meals and enjoy plenty of wonderful moments that create fabulous memories. Oh, and I love the floors (wink).

What a fun thread! Mom would yank us indoors on Good Friday to say the rosary from noon until three o'clock. That evening, we colored eggs. Sunday morning, we'd scramble out to our Easter baskets to see what the Easter bunny brought us. We each would receive a chocolate, hollow bunny with the candy eyes, jelly beans, chocolate coated marshmallow bunnies, chocolate foil wrapped eggs, and a small gift- a wrist watch or some such thing. Then we'd dress up in our new dresses, white gloves and each in a new hat- then, off to mass we went. Man, I hated mass.

Thanks, Fun2BHere! I'll check them out. Sonni1, great notion if his free time weren't all taken up by swim. Anglophilia, many thanks for the perspective and insight into what's coming. Islay is quite right that he doesn't need a special diet at his age. Just one that's more meat and vegetables, less cheese and sweets, than your average kid or cookbook. The fitness cookbooks might be good for that. I'll give them a close look. I talked to the mom about this today, armed with suggestions from you all. She seemed to like the idea of the wok, and talked it out. In the end, we decided together that the boy isn't quite ready for it. It came up without prompting that she already gets Cooking Light. I'm leaning toward books and maybe some specialty tools.

I use Charlee's recipe for Cajun seasoning (she sent some in a swap), love to see the ornaments received, etc.

I am glad to know I am not the only one that goes back like that. I have stayed semi-active in 3 forums over the years and I have enough ornaments to decorate a small table top tress. I cheat a little and have some of the Easter ones on the tree too.

Over the years I have given away or thrown away things from swaps. That is why I don't participate in them anymore. I still have some things and the Christmas ornaments are keepers. During this time, I have moved from CA to Iowa and that is one reason things have gotten cleared out.

I have a folder bulging with cards. postcards and letters from KTers. I have swap items and KT gifts all over my house. Some of the things I use everyday, others are just decorative.. but I remember who gave me what and it always puts a smile on my face. I've gotten to know such nice Kters through the years.

I came across cards KT'ers sent Maddie after she was hospitalized with HUS. She still has the books and by golly, she STILL brings this pink bear with her when she is at Daddy's house!
I was so touched by all the kind and caring thoughts and all the KT'ers worrying with her Daddy and I those long weeks she was in the hospital. Then you all decided she needed cards and cheering up! ;) My heart swelled with love for you all.

She was 16 months old here...next month she will be 7! Isn't that unreal!? See her pink bear?

I'd like to get back to doing the Christmas card and gift exchanges. I also think it would be nice to get another Prayer thread going. These are all Good Things.

PS That wasn't really a KT tradition, but more a KT'ers kindness which is also tradition.
