If You Draw Names for Chritsmas...How Far Ahead

We've drawn names on DH side of the family for years. My MIL's other DIL (I refuse to admit kinship to her) seems to be the one that decides WHEN we do it. So...here it is barely the middle of SEPTEMBER..and she's wanting to draw names NOW! WTH?

If you draw names...when do you do it?

We've drawn every year for as long as I remember.
We draw on Christmas day for the following Christmas. That way everyone can take advantage of seasonal sales!!

This year, for the first time, we're buying a $50 generic gift, and if the recipient gets it and someone else wants it, it can be traded. But just twice.

We've never done this, but heard of it, so we're trying it.
I haven't bought my gift yet!!!!

I'd really been wondering when the redbuds would show that first blush of color and finally .... just in the last day or two, they are showing up along the roadsides. A deer visited a few days ago and snacked on some of my tulips :( but the ones that are left are beginning to bloom and they are beautiful! Phlox is now blooming and the hostas are growing fast. I'm now pretty sure that the tree that I thought might be a crabapple is just that, and it looks like another small tree is a redbud (yay). It's fun discovering what's growing here, now that the weather has finally decided to warm up. A neighbor said 12 wild turkeys were in our yard the other day, but we were at work so we missed seeing them. The street we live on is called Turkey Run Drive, so now we now how it got its name :). Oh, and one bit of good news .... they started the dirt work where the building will go, and when they stripped off the bermuda grass the land is mostly nice dirt, with only one little strip of red clay running through it. This may have once been farmland, or a pasture. So that's good news for the vegetable garden. Suzie

Unless all of your neighbors also use milky spore, it may not be as effective as you hope. Japanese Beetles do travel great distances. Regarding the traps, they should be placed as far away as possible, generally; I've heard numbers like 300 feet away. My neighbors and I take turns hosting the traps each year, and this seems to work out fairly well for us. I have also planted hardy yellow roses as a "food crop" for them, which seems to deter them from attacking all of the other plants in my yard. I don't have any yellow roses in July or August, but this one (Teasing Georgia by David Austin) is very tough and always bounces back and they leave some of the more delicate roses alone. They will also be attracted to flowering plum trees and other members of the hibiscus family, so you can use those as food plants as well. Just pick something that is very tough or that you won't miss if they totally eat it up. It will be even more effective if you can place the food plants upwind from the rest of your garden. I am also trying something new this year: yellow 4 o'clocks. I've been told that 4 o'clocks are poisonous to them and, since yellow is a food color for them, I'm hoping they'll gorge on the 4 o'clocks and poison themselves. We went through a similar experience with a design-build firm too - we came in 40% higher than our budget. We spelled everything out in advance and it was documented in our contract, so I felt that all parties were operating from the same page. We basically went back to the drawing board, took a hard look at the subs costs (most everything is subbed out) and our budget for this project. It was a compromise and took seven more months to get started. Luckily we had time on our side. At the end of the day I think it takes time, patience, knowledge and lots of research...and more patience.

Thx just having fun learning with shovel and compost and sharing as I go. I've had just 1 year to work on my yard. In 3-4 might set up a website to feature it just for sharing ideas for others. Not a large yard. Just seems large because of the design principles I am testing now. Yes indeed cottage style with lush subtropical effects too via "zone pushing tricks". i post regularly in Instagram under "alteredspace" name. I literally like altering my yard space visually and internal self space via hiking in PNW. The style of gardens you might like are featured in how to design style in the old Readers Digest gardening book "A Garden for All Seasons". They teach the evolved design of UK style Cottages Gardens where 2 to 4 season changes of interest are arranged in the same and often limited space. Tbe book is out of print now but can still get them on Amazon used, at great price. A few minutes ago I went outside to start digging again and a rain squall hit. The pond fish thought it might be a 2nd breakfast hitting their surface and became quite active. So went into the Gazebo and threw them a little more Cold Season pond food and desided to check messages. There's 15+ fish Comets and Koi and some have become larger than legal trout keeper size. Were all small a year ago. Nice quite moment here with the rain sounds, thinking about what's next to install.

I've always hated family gift-giving. Either you draw names or try to find "meaningful" gifts for every family member. Both MIL and her daughter used to open their gifts and hand them back to me to exchange. How ungrateful! Last year I said "No gifts." I made candies/cookies for family members and gave little gifts to kids 5 and under. Best holiday in tears!

We usually draw names on Thanksgiving day. Each person/family is asked to email a wish list to everyone.

We used to do it but quit years ago. We gathered at Thanksgiving rather than Christmas so we would draw then for the following year. We would bring the current year's gifts with us wrapped at T-giving so everyone could put them under their tree at their own home. I think we were are relieved when we just quit exchanging gifts "cold turkey", pardon the pun!

Years ago, when all the kids were little, we bought on gift for each child, and drew names for the adults. It worked fine, until the kids hit teens. Then after a couple of disasters , it stopped. Most of the relatives are lucky to get a card.

For my family, we have only been drawing names for a few years and we do it at Thanksgiving.

The extended family get-together would do a name draw at Thanksgiving. I really didn't like all the obligatory gift giving and decided to opt-out from it. I give gifts to people whom I wish to give and people that want to give something to me will also. Generally I've discouraged it. I've started giving gifts during the year when I see something that I know someone needs or wants and it would make a nice gift, especially when on sale or clearance, I get it for them. I also like to take people out to eat or something like that as a "WTH" gift or make some baked goods. It's far more personal and more appreciated than the obligatory trinkets that sit on a shelf, are re-gifted, garage saled or thrown away.
