How *not* to save money on an old house (photos)

A dear friend, despite being a close friend of The Sears Lady, hired a friend of a friend of a friend to do this to his fine old house.

From the backside:

The new shower manifold didn't fit the old holes, so he busted out the tiles to "make it fit."

My friend had to hire a plumber to come undo and redo what the first handyman did. Now he has to hire someone to remove several rows of tile, chisel out the old mortar (behind the tile) and replace it with new tile, which will cost quite a bit of money.

The saddest thing is, this could all have been avoided if my beloved friend had asked my advice - before - the bathroom was ruined. The damage was done to make a new shower manifold fit. I told him, "I could have ordered you a shower manifold that would have been a perfect fit and no tiles would have been destroyed."

Anyway - I present this as a cautionary tale. Sad, isn't it?

BTW, this is (was) a beautiful 1930s vintage home in one of Virginia's finest neighborhoods.
