I/ve heard it used, but never could figure out what it meant! And I agree with Vicki about the "my bad".....it sounds like someone is being just too cute.

It's a common phenomenon.
See a term that is new to them, and they want to use it ad nauseum ...to make others think they're intelligent.

The only context I've heard it used in, is for animals ... saying they're fully vetted means they've had a checkup, shots, etc.

I'll join the "tired of the word" crowd! DH mentioned the other day that the term was used constantly, and he didn't know what it meant. I understood what it meant, but couldn't figure out how to explain it...so I looked it up.

According to Wikipedia, "To vet was originally a horse-racing term, referring to the requirement that a horse be checked for health and soundness by a veterinarian before being allowed to race. Thus, it has taken the general meaning 'to check'."

After checking the definition, I dislike the word more than before!

I'm sick of that word and several others, "myself" being the main culprit. People use it when they don't know the proper word to use, like "I" or "me". Drives me crazy.

Also- "gifted" used as a verb. "I gifted my mother a lovely bouquet" or "it was gifted to me". What ever happened to "gave" or "gave a gift" or "was given"? And it's more than just word, seems like everyone is taking a regular word and making a verb out of it.

Wanda, thanks for the explanation, we were wondering about "vetted" last week at work. I meant to look it up but never did.

"Basically" was way overused for years, but thankfully it's faded away some.

I've never heard it used and frankly I had no idea what it meant until I read some other responses. Perhaps it's an American thing?

I'm more tired of the overuse of the word "like". The English language has gone to the dogs. It sure is hard to find people that speak proper English these days.

This is such a coincidence; I had started making a list of such words and terms and was going to start a thread. Vet was one of them.

Others are:

Loved ones. (What happened to Family and friends?)

Same page.

Too much on their plate.

Thinking outside the box.

Wrap my mind around that.

The next level.

I just heard it for the first time right after reading your post. Before I wouldn't have know what he meant. Good thing I read your post. I have the TV on and am going back and forth. On GMA Matt Lauer said it in regards to "did John McCain thoroughly vet his canidate for VP." Why not just say 'check' instead.

I have always hated "my bad". It has never made sense to me. I thought they should be saying, "I'm bad."

I agree with 'my bad'. I've never liked that. I've heard 'vetted', but I have learned to let most of the political stuff I hear on tv just go past my ears.

'My bad' is one I can't stand either...first time I heard it I thought the person stopped talking in the middle of saying something. It just didn't sound right. I was waiting for my bad dog, my bad kid, my bad language...something! LOL..I hate it too! I had never heard the word Vet used for anything other than my dogs doctor or a veteran. I think it would wear on me too. Another phrase I hate is "I'm down with it" my neighbor, a 48 year old woman says it all the time when she agrees with something or is asked to go somewhere with someone. She sounds rediculous....she must have just heard it not to long ago because I just noticed her saying it a few weeks ago and now she says it all the time. It makes me nuts!

I hate the phrase, "Do you know what I'm sayin'?" People will say three or four words and then stop and ask their listener. "Uh, YEAH! if you'd just shut up and tell me, I know exactly what you're saying!" LOL

"My bad" ~~ are people afraid of saying "my mistake" or "my error"?

I haven't been watching too much national tv on the political scene......tired of hearing it. When I heard the word 'vet' used as a verb in conjunction with Palin yesterday, I thought I'd heard it wrong. Then it was used again and again in just a few sentences, I realized what they meant, and had the same reaction as all of you. Dumb.

I often wonder, who decides on these "new" words or phrases? What happened to the English language?
What really, really irks me, when interviewing a supposedly educated sport figure and they keep saying, "you know"..

One that bugs me is "prolly." I guess I just don't understand why folks cannot say "probably."

I use "prolly" with my kids, but in jest, really. (Though it IS much easier to say as it rolls off the tongue mid-sentence!)

How about "staycation'. I actually like the term (and all of its possibilities!)

I'm thorougly sick of the word Change. Every other word out of a politicians mouth is change this, change that. I doubt you'll find very many people who would say "oh, the US is doing great; let's leave everything the way it is" But at the same time, tell me what you plan/hope to do to make it better, not just stand there & over-use the same word.

A few that more than annoy me:

The word "take" seems to have disappeared from usage.
It's "bring" it here, "bring" it there.

And people who start a sentence with, "I mean"...

I've never heard "vet" but I'm tired of "amazing." I think "amazing" should only apply to something AMAZING. Like, the sun coming up, conception and birth. Amazing should be something that can't be topped, and not applied to people; I cringe when I hear that!! JMHO

My 9 year old grand niece was here for several days.....she calls me the Manner and Grammer police.
She said "Like, you know, like, I like it here." Also, every time she started talking about her friend she would say, My friend, she, said this or that....next sentence, My friend,she, did this or that. I asked her if the name of her friend was Frenchie.

Baby bump - now that's another one that irritates me!

Another one I had never heard until a couple of years ago,using "ramp" as in "ramp it up".HUH?

I agree with all of you. Another word that drives me crazy is "reveal" used as a noun. I hear that one on home decorating and makeover tv shows. "It's time for the reveal!"

"Step up to the plate" and "take it to the next level" also annoy me now.

Well, I can just say that I have used vetted in a sentence and they were talking about McCain vetting Sarah Palin for VP. I wonder just how many other people have no clue what it means. i sure didn't until I read this post.

Maybe because I'm a political junkie, but I've always known what vet / vetted meant -- I did not know, however, that it originated via animal care:

From Merriam-Webster online:
1 a: to provide veterinary care for (an animal) or medical care for (a person) b: to subject (a person or animal) to a physical examination or checkup
2 a: to subject to usually expert appraisal or correction b: to evaluate for possible approval or acceptance

"Ramp up"?

At the back of a flat-bed trailer, often called a "float", there are a couple of tubes at each side of the back, and two ramps, 6 - 8' long, with a tube at each side of one end of each, and two long bolts going through each set of those four tubes to attach the two ramps to each side of the back of the trailer.

Swing the ramps up from the trailer and over, letting them drop to the ground.

Then drive your tractor with the front end loader and a bucket on the back up the ramps on to the trailer.

Then swing the ramps back up and over, to lie on the trailer just behind the tractor.

My landlord the sod farmer does that every few days, to help lay the sod beside the houses that the builders are putting up.

They have things like that at the back of the big transport aircraft, to drive heavy equipment up into them.

It's usually used with regard to a project that's been operating on a small scale and is being increased.

My 36 year old BIL called everyone "Dude", including me, for the longest time. Now that I think about it, he hasn't said it lately. For awhile he was also saying "phat" but it was thankfully a phase he outgrew.

I HATE "my bad" and never understood it.
