RANT- Pop up Ads - anyone else tired of them ??

the first 10 minutes of being on this forum, I got 5 So. beach diet ads! you can't shut them off, by the time you arrow to the turn off, it jumps back again darn thing - If I wanted to lose weight that would be the last darn company I'd want to try - they are irritating as all get out ! I have my pop up blocker on, but that one always gets by it .Grrrrrr!

Suzy - it's an "I-Village" thing. This was recently discussed. The Pop-Ups are like commercials, I-Village is paid for the ads to appear because there are so many folks using these Garden Web forums and if a few people see the ad and go for whatever it is, someone is happy. Even with your Pop-Up Blocker on it doesn't do much good. Unfortunately the best you can do is to try and shut them down.

I hear you. I was actually starting to get resentful of "Honey Bunches of Oats," and I even like the cereal. :-)

My 2 cents, since nobody asked is that the forum is still a valuable resource and generally a pleasurable experience. I used retina's instructions and the flash ads went away. One extra click to find an email address is tolerable if iVillage has moved it to protect me from spammers, and that may well be what's up. I sent a message to the website hosts telling them they broke the "Remember Me" checkbox functionality and have asked them to fix it. Hey! Maybe that will work!! We'll see. Mary

Went through settings again. I hate to do this as it boxes me in on some needed access. Those background pop ups are extremely annoying. Not only am I irritated with GW having one more thing to annoy us, how the heck do they think I want to gamble? They can barrage me with this stuff all day and I'll never go there. This is becoming such an issue with GW that their site could begin to lose members. When are they going to realize such?

is anyone else tired of wood flooring?

Most people who don't like wood floors seem to object to dings and dents that occur in wood over time. They also fade, the finish eventually wears off and they have to be refinished. I like the dings and dents, and don't mind when the floors under the chairs look more worn than the rest of the floor. All that does is prove that the house is lived in by humans, dogs, cats and other living things, not ghosts :-) I would worry that a floor that looks "brand new" 20 years after installation would look completely fake in the same way that upholstery covered in plastic slipcovers does. That said, we have considered a wood laminate for our basement and I have put it off for seven years now. It would be an improvement over carpet (in DH's opinion, he hates carpet) but I just cannot talk myself into it. I guess I'm too firmlly in the wood floor camp.

Nice tips, bmore. Wonder if I can use that same technique with Firefox. Have to look into that. Tamara responded to my complaint, stating that she had reported the problem this morning and a fix should be in place soon. She also told me that generally these types of ads should only appear once per session. If only they were that infrequent! I even had the Duracell ad show up on the message preview page and I've never seen an ad there before - not even when we were dealing with the underlined green word hyperlinks mess. Oh, scratch that. I just noticed the Dove bleed-in ad from the right when I previewed my reply. At least it's not nearly as annoying as Duracell or Penney's ads. I've seen the Penney's ad once so far today but no Duracell ad. I'm hoping they've gone away for good.

What I hate is the one that takes up the whole page & when I clicked on the word "skip" in the top right corner, it opened the page anyway.

They may be an ivilliage thing but there is obviously some way to stop or prevent them because I don't see them. I have Verizon DSL that has a pop-up blocker but I don't think it's anything fancy. I use the Google Tool Bar and it has more pop-up blocker stuff on it. I also run Ad-Aware and Spybot at least once a week and clean out my temp files every other day or so. No problems.
It all only takes a few minutes to do, it's free and its worth it.

I also have DSL, and Pop up Blocker,Ad-aware,you name it I have it but...there are a few ad's that seem to sneak thru,and they also are the most irritating ones,that am unable to "skip"! LOL at least some are blocked,could be worse I guess.

I'm trying to remember if there is also something in the ivilliage site where you have to turn this off? I remember clicking on something and then asking not to receive this stuff. Maybe you were to right click? Also, if you check the Computer Help fourm at the Home Forums, there may be other answers there!

Download and use Mozilla Firefox as your browser and it eliminates the pop ups.
