What Are You Reading This Week?

I finished reading Rosanna of The Amish by Joseph W. Yoder it was very good. I also finished reading Frontier Woman by Walker D. Wyman, humorous book from the diary of a frontier woman. This book was very good. Now I am reading, It Happened in the Smokies by Gladys Trentham Russell. I find it an interesting account of living in the Smokey Mountains in the early part of the last century. What are you reading now?

Nowhere to Run by Nancy Bush. Got to read the sequel next. Nowhere to Hide.

Angel's Flight by Michael Connelly, another great read by the master.

I'd really been wondering when the redbuds would show that first blush of color and finally .... just in the last day or two, they are showing up along the roadsides. A deer visited a few days ago and snacked on some of my tulips :( but the ones that are left are beginning to bloom and they are beautiful! Phlox is now blooming and the hostas are growing fast. I'm now pretty sure that the tree that I thought might be a crabapple is just that, and it looks like another small tree is a redbud (yay). It's fun discovering what's growing here, now that the weather has finally decided to warm up. A neighbor said 12 wild turkeys were in our yard the other day, but we were at work so we missed seeing them. The street we live on is called Turkey Run Drive, so now we now how it got its name :). Oh, and one bit of good news .... they started the dirt work where the building will go, and when they stripped off the bermuda grass the land is mostly nice dirt, with only one little strip of red clay running through it. This may have once been farmland, or a pasture. So that's good news for the vegetable garden. Suzie

I gave up my car when I moved to downtown Charleston, so I spend a lot of time just walking and riding my bicycle to get around the city. I used to do yoga and ballet, but thus far have not found any classes here that I can afford. I do enjoy cooking, but do not like to bake, as I seem to have no "sweet tooth." I love to try new dishes. I am in a lively French conversation group that meets weekly; our "leader" is a French native. I also enroll each semester in history classes at the nearby college, which is only 7 minutes away by bicycle. That enables me to utilize the wonderful college library. I enjoy being on campus and talking to the students. When I have free time, I also like to explore on foot the historic neighborhoods of Charleston, and take in the gardens. Day-trips with friends to visit the plantations are also enjoyable. I used to dabble a bit in genealogy, but seem to have gotten away from that. I do like to "surf" the Internet and am in a few "chatrooms" (forums).

Just finished "Broken Harbor" by Tana French. It's as much a novel about misplaced values and responsibilities as it is a mystery.

Lost in Shangra-la, by Elizabeth Letts

It's a true story about a plane crash with 24 US servicemen and women on board. It happened in 1945 in New Guinea. The survivors find themselves in a very remote village.
It's a book club choice.

I read and enjoyed the Lost in Shangra La book months ago and enjoyed it. I read Heading Out to Wonderful by Robert Goolrick (author of A Reliable Wife). It was good, but definitely not light reading. Then I raced through and enjoyed Pines, a real page turner. I borrowed it for free through Amazon Prime.

Today I started this book by Kim Vogel Sawyer.....

A WHISPER OF PEACE -- Ostracized by her tribe because of her white father, Lizzie Dawson lives alone in the mountains of Alaska, practicing the ways of her people even as she resides in the small cabin her father built for her mother. Clay Selby has always wanted to be like his father, a missionary who holds a great love for the native people and has brought many to God. Clay arrives in Alaska to set up a church and school among the Athabascans. He is totally focused on this goal...until he meets a young, independent Indian woman with the most striking blue eyes he's ever seen. But Lizzie is clearly not part of the tribe. And befriending her might have dire consequences for his mission. Will Clay be forced to choose between his desire to minister to the natives and the nudging of his heart?

Very interesting to read about the native Alaskans and their skills! I'd never make it there! ;)

I just finished The Ice Princess by Camilla Lackberg - a mystery translated from Swedish. It was pretty good - a first book and I understand the next ones are even better.

Alisande, I would say that the Brandman version of the Jesse Stone books are pretty faithful to Parker's style in his later books, but they don't progress the character, so they feel sort of static. Now, that they've made the television movies with Tom Selleck, I can only see and hear Selleck when I read the books...LOL! Selleck really is the perfect actor to portray the character.
