A lot of the people who won't evacuate have no transportation or no place to go.

The poorest people are usually most at risk.

When we were evacuated in the Flood of '93...someone broke into our house through a basement window, and kicked open our door to the upstairs to gain entry into our home.

It still upsets me to think of that.

If you don't want cuts in Medicare & Social Security.......

I worked for the Social Security Administration for over 30 years. Social Security does a hell of a lot of good. I know personally because Medicare pays for my kidney dialysis. If anyone is worried about waste and fraud, you can report it by calling 1 800 772 1213 or going online on www SSA gov and look for the "report fraud" button, leading to the Office of the Inspector General. Examples of fraud would be someone buying or selling Social Security cards, working while disabled (a guy who collects Disability who can cut his lawn and play golf doesn't count), not reporting a death and cashing that person's Social Security checks afterwards, and receiving mothers/father checks for a child under 18 who doesn't have custody are examples. And don't blame Seniors or Social Security employees for the cheaters.

Karen-I Hope You Don't Meet Harvey!
Q
Comments (29)
Hey guys, Thanks for thinking and praying for us. Yes, Lake Charles is forecast to get a lot more rain and the wind hits us tonight. Harvey is coming right up to Lake Charles. This is his 3rd hit on the Gulf coast and we're pretty tired of him! Hopefully, Harvey will get tired and just leave us with a quick hit and go away. For the month of August we have had only 2 days without rain. So, we are saturated and the water has nowhere to go. I have tried reaching out to May/lowspark but we've not connected. Her area, in Houston, was one of the hardest hit. Water above every roof in that neighborhood. I do know that they had a mandatory evacuation for that area so I feel certain she got out in time. I'm sure you all have seen the news. Houston is in a catastrophic devastated way! Many of my friends and family are suffering and it will be many years till they can get back to some normalcy. We are going to be ok because we are very high, on a bluff, but surrounding areas are not high up. My heart is going out to all in this area and the state of Texas. Believe me, we can feel the love coming from all over. Continue to send it please!

Dee, now I understand the Tweet reference. for anyone else who did not see the rabbit story: https://www.mediaite.com/online/watch-california-man-becomes-internet-hero-by-saving-rabbit-from-raging-wildfires/ I truly believe most people are good. It has been hard to see that lately. Personally, it really does me good to see these stories. I have been watching way too much news and it is taking a toll. ETA: Before someone else says it, I am aware that some have scoffed at this rabbit video because it is unwise behavior and can put others in danger, slow down evacuation etc etc. I don't care to argue that. It is touching that this person so empathizes with the rabbit.

Two thoughts: - remote parking lots with only sporadic traffic and where people leave their cars for hours at a time provide a tempting target for those who want to break into cars. Whether up in the mountains, out in the woods, downtown in a city or in your neighborhood, valuables should never be left in a car. And anything of any value or interest to an evil-doer should be out of sight in the trunk or covered back space. -for those who often spend time in remote areas, there are two different kinds of electronic devices that can provide safety for you and comfort for your loved ones. I don't know the right names. The first and cheapest kind is a handheld device that will send and receive brief messages using satellite links. Some of these will also transmit location data, though the subscriptions for that run a bit more money. The second kind of device is an emergency beacon. These things, not cheap but offering an essential service, summon emergency evacuation services IMMEDIATELY worldwide. One of my kids with a penchant for doing extreme things in extreme places has one and it is a great comfort to know that service is available. This registration is through a US governmental agency, I forget which one, but it is for (I believe) global coverage. If interested, talk to someone at an REI store or another active/outdoor supplier, I'm sure there would be people in such stores who would know about what's available. .This one is about the size of a large stopwatch, so it's rather small and easily carried.

This subject reminds me to be careful when going to the
State Fair next week. Pickpockets travel from fair to fair
so I always take as little as possible and keep it close to
me. Hopefully that will be enough..

omg never thought they'd be able to survive looting...how do they get away, when the traffic is all monitored by the cops?

That's why I quit going to the state fair. We always went in the afternoon and then went for the grandstand show and left late.

They moved it long time ago, due to the lack of safey, but it's not like what a state fair used to be. Gone are the good ole days.

I've been saying for 2 days, that Atlantic City is going to make New Orleans look like a Sunday School picnic. There's going to be a lot of crime--I just hope both my sister's places are okay. One has a house one town to the north, the other is in the next town to the south.

I just recently saw a retrospective on NOLA/Katrine & they said that the incidence & scope of looting in New Orleans was waaay over-reported & over-played.
Some of it happened because those people were desperate for food/water/diapers/etc. Yes, big screen tvs were stolen, but the images were worse than the reality.
