I dislike it when that happens.....not necessary to leave the doors unlocked to get broken into.

My vehicle was gone through twice. Second time just a couple weeks ago. Nothing stolen, not even my husbands tools. I think They were looking for money. My sisters van was stolen years ago. It was found a few weeks later. They took everything except the crocheted blanket I made her for Christmas. I’m not sure if I was insulted.

P.S. I never leave it unlocked. Except for last night, luckily. Loads of cars were hit last night, even locked cars. Don't have a false sense of security. I probably would have ended up with window problems in addition to being inconvenienced musicwise had I not left it unlocked.

rob, will your car play music from regular storage media, like a thumb drive, an sd card, or from your phone? Many will. Rip your songs to digital form, keep your CDs in the house, and then the copy you keep in the car is instantly replaceable. Let someone take it and you still have your collection ready to make another copy from.

PS, I might have pitched those CDs too. That's the great thing about music, there's something for everyone.

Yay for trail hikers! Son and I were last week, different part of the Appalachian trail. Aw, we're sisters on the trail.

Unfortunately, Ali is right. I was at a client’s office, where my car was locked and in a parking lot with lots of other cars. When I returned, I didn’t notice anything different until I went to put the key in the ignition. All there was was a hole and it was completely gone! I jumped out and found it on the floor by the gas pedal. When I looked back up I caught a glimps of broken glass and the back window had been smashed in. The tow said mine was the 3rd car in less than an hour that had been broken into on that street. The thieves didn’t want anything from inside the cars, they wanted the cars! But fortunately the ninnies didn’t know “the right way” to hot wire them and kept cutting one wire too many.

That was/is the only time I’ve ever experienced something like that and it really really gave me the creeps. I’m sorry that happened to you and I’m glad you got your music back.

The thieves could have used those Christian CD's.

There are parks and trails around here that will ticket a vehicle owner if valuables are left visible inside a vehicle, even if said vehicle is locked.

Fine the victim who tempts the thief.

wow brush, that's the extreme opposite. Hardly compassionate? People do forget things. Hm.

Brush, I've seen news stories of sweeps being done to leave warnings for those that have left valuables visible in their cars at Christmas time but not tickets.

The car is in front my house, so they have my address. We don't even have driveways (built in 1918 and the streets are very skinny. So skinny, they have different parking laws than the rest of Nashville for us, i.e. we have our own codes), much less a garage. But thanks! They are forming a neighborhood watch and stepping up police presence.

OK, Lily, the worry-wart in me has to ask whether your husband kept his phone on his person while you were hiking. As the mom of two daughters who like to hike, I'm always a teensy bit worried that they will take a fall or meet some other problem....

My son and I had the same sort of discussion sjerin. At some point we both had trouble traversing a particularly slick and very skinny portion of the trail and it was close to the summit (obviously not a lot of people had trekked to this part). He said good thing we have our phones. And I said, what good would it do? Is there reception? If there is, how could anyone reach us if we fell/got hurt/etc.!?! They'd have to get up here like we came. So really, is a phone helpful ;) Just gotta hope it gets reception and you can make it to some place safe.

When we visited my sister in Sicily several years ago she reprimanded me several times for locking the doors of her car. She said its pretty much accepted that someone will go through it and grab anything of value, but if you make it hard for them and lock it, they'll break a window just out of pique.

Her rented house and all the others in that area had 6 to 8 foot tall walls, with 8 to 10 foot tall steel bar fences atop them, and the doors and windows all had bars that locked with a key from either side. One morning while visiting I tried to figure out how to get out to walk to a nearby coffeeshop but gave up before I made it out of the yard (perhaps it was even before getting out of the house.)

Two thoughts:

- remote parking lots with only sporadic traffic and where people leave their cars for hours at a time provide a tempting target for those who want to break into cars. Whether up in the mountains, out in the woods, downtown in a city or in your neighborhood, valuables should never be left in a car. And anything of any value or interest to an evil-doer should be out of sight in the trunk or covered back space.

-for those who often spend time in remote areas, there are two different kinds of electronic devices that can provide safety for you and comfort for your loved ones. I don't know the right names. The first and cheapest kind is a handheld device that will send and receive brief messages using satellite links. Some of these will also transmit location data, though the subscriptions for that run a bit more money.

The second kind of device is an emergency beacon. These things, not cheap but offering an essential service, summon emergency evacuation services IMMEDIATELY worldwide. One of my kids with a penchant for doing extreme things in extreme places has one and it is a great comfort to know that service is available. This registration is through a US governmental agency, I forget which one, but it is for (I believe) global coverage. If interested, talk to someone at an REI store or another active/outdoor supplier, I'm sure there would be people in such stores who would know about what's available. .This one is about the size of a large stopwatch, so it's rather small and easily carried.

May have changed and it is lying but from my retired insurance agent if your car is broken into "You locked it". Practiced thieves know ways of opening the doors without damage. Those looking for a quick money source will break the windows.

There are still areas in this country that do not have cell reception so just thinking that your phone will work in all areas only provides a false security blanket. If you are thinking it is only in mountain areas there are parts of Iowa that you can go that still have little or no cell coverage. Husband's aunt lived in one of those places and her daughter recently told me if she wanted to call someone she had to be on one side of the house because for approximately a mile in the other directions there was no coverage.

Do they have marker numbers along the trails so that (if you happen to remember the last one that you passed) the emergency responders will know right where to find you?

If someone has access to your garage door opener it's very easy to reset the codes. Usually holding a button on the opener and then ones on the remotes will reset any codes. Even works for the ones with "rolling" codes.

Also another good practice, if your garage is connected to your house wire a kill switch inside the entry door. Turn it off at night and then the door will only function via hard-wired buttons not via remote.

We don't have garages. Or driveways. The houses on this street were built in 1918. They didn't have cars ;)
