Do any of you have a working cockoo clock in you house?

I have had one here since the kids were little. I love it, and hate when it is not working. Just a few times in the last 20 years or so I have had to take it in for repairs. Mostly just age related stuff.

I paid around $200 for it in the 80's and feel lost without its noise.

The grands love to wait and watch for the bird to come out. Such a simple thrill!

I do now! I haven't put it up yet, waiting to get the livingroom repainted.

Yes, we have one that my parents bought when we lived in Europe when I was a child.

My house was built in 1916 as a parsonage for the United Methodist-Episcopal South Church. No real owners - just transient ministers, so nothing interesting garden-wise. The most interesting features are an intricately-designed 15-ft.-deep cistern, and the brickwork of 3 chimneys that serve 6 fireplaces. I tilled most of the flower beds and ran across enough broken dishes and silverware to conclude that many a bad meal was served here over the decades! Also beds of used coal, garbage and antique bottles, even a piece of petrified wood. For reasons unknown to me, I found many old and very small horseshoes. Also found a silver Deutsche Mark minted in nazi Germany (complete with nazi symbol imprinted on front). But my very best find was while tilling up the front yard for sodding. Underneath several inches of soil I discovered a ruby Mason's ring. Many months later I found the owner. He was in his late 70's and had lost it while roofing the house several decades ago. He replaced the ring some time after losing it, but "retired" the replacement after getting the original ring back. He sacked groceries at the local grocery store and always raised his hand to my face to let me know he was wearing the original ring whenever I came in. In short, I love my old home so much that almost everything I have unearthed goes on display!

We moved into a neighborhood of 1960s-70s colonials. One of the many things I liked about our house was the black slate foyer floor. A new friend came by and mentioned that "that slate is really easy to remove" and she had just put new large-format tile in her foyer instead. 12 years later and I still prefer my black slate. The other thing I wouldn't and won't change is the kitchen curtains. The kitchen faces the street and includes a breakfast nook, so we need some curtains, but I don't want to block the view altogether. The house came with cafe curtains, as well as an upper tier of curtains (not a valance) for the larger breakfast nook windows. They are somewhat sheer, maybe translucent is the word, which I like: it's like looking through lightly-frosted glass so I can see if someone is walking by the house without really being able to see who they are. The little ruffle probably dates them the most, but given that they are otherwise plain it's cute. What I'd really like is a toile pattern, but I just can't find a fabric that is translucent, without being "shiny".

Do you have a clock radio in bedroom?

Guess the ad is gone now. I did get a clock radio for my bedroom in Cathedral City, but Palm Springs does not have a good selection of radio stations. I have this one set for NPR (which is in Santa Monica, but they also have a transmitter in Palm Springs), but I would rather have it set to a university station so that I could get alternative music with no commercials. I will not set a clock radio to a commercial station because the last thing I want to wake up to is radio commercials. Sometimes NPR is playing classical music in the morning, and that can put me back to sleep😴 I don't like my new clock radio as much the the previous one, as it apparently does not have battery back-up and California Edison has frequent power outages - on purpose! It is also difficult to turn off when I'm half asleep.

I used to have an alarm clock next to my bed until a couple of months ago when it died. I only need it for telling time as our cats are my alarm. I haven't been able to find one to replace it. The old one was too bright, so I'd put a black wash cloth over it. Talk about offending one's decor sensibilities! I'm using my cell phone right now and I hate it - I don't want to pick up my phone to check the time. I need dimmable and quiet (no ticking). I will be checking out some of the cool ones mentioned here!

I don't have one in my house, but I did grow up with one at my parents house. It was in the central hallway. My father bought it while on holiday once. I don't know where. I actually miss it! We had that and also a mantel clock that chimed. If you woke during the night you could always listen and know what time it was. It's amazing what sounds you get used to. Other people wouldn't be able to sleep through the noise!

Yes, we have several. My husband's business is clock repair so we always have a lot of different clocks going all the time. I guess were are used to all the cuckooing and chiming since it rarely bothers our sleep. Occasionally,if we have something really different in the shop, it will keep me awake.

mine is hanging on the wall but not working...my cat when she was just a baby did a number on the chains so got to take it in and have it repaired...I love hearing Edelweiss and have really missed it!

I have always wanted a Black Forest cuckoo clock. Never have gotten one, and there's really no reason why I haven't. Odd.

I have 5 loudly ticking and chiming antique clocks in the house, but no cuckoo clock. The DH wanted one, but I said no.

I won't change my mind, either. I just don't like them.

No, I don't have one. However my daughter Terri has one they bought when they went to Germany to visit her husband's family. It is very ornate and pretty big. All I can remember right now about it is the dead rabbits and game birds on it!

I don't have one in my house but my parents always had one and, in fact, my brother who still lives in that house, faithfully keeps that same clock running.

Yes. I have always loved "chiming" clocks and have several of them in the house. Unfortunately, I am so used to them that I rarely hear them anymore.

Nope. I built one from a kit years ago but it stopped running. It's still hanging on a wall in my Mom's house. Been silent over 40 years!

We got a Black Forest one in 1973. I moved back to my home town 10 years ago and guess we haven't started it much. One day a few months ago my oldest friend was here as she always is and I started it. She didn't know it still worked and I didn't know how much she loves cookoo clocks! We've been friends over 45 years. Thanks to you it's running again today.

Oh my gosh! I don't have any in my home, but I work 30 min from where i live. If I work on a Friday night till midnight, and have to be back at 6:00 am, I camp at my sisters. Her husband has a thing about clocks. 3 story house- in excess of 300 clocks! MANY are cookoos. So many that I hear noises every 10 minutes or so. I have gotten pretty used to it, but I noticed the last time that he brought a windup alarm clock downstairs so I wouldn't oversleep. yeah, like that would happen...lol..
Sis asked me a year ago or so if I thought it was menopause causing her sleep problems. I told her I think it is really causeomen bringing it on!!

We don't have a Cookoo, but we do have a mantle clock that has a song and chimes on the hour. We love it! I think it is a very "homey" sound.

Mine is also a black forest clock. I can lay anywhere in the house and listen to its chimes and know what time it is. Most of the time, like a lot of you mentioned, I don't hear it at all anymore. The two times it was broken, I felt like something terrible was missing in my house. It was awful! How funny we get attached to the sounds and the noises in our homes.

I had one for about 15 years and my cat broke it. I love the sound of a cockoo. I need to buy another, think I will check out ebay tonight.

Oh, me me! I have one and I love it. My favorite Aunt and my brother got it for me as a birthday/Christmas gift in 1998. It was the last gift from my Aunt as she passed away in April of 1999. So it holds a special spot in my heart. And it is still running and has a music box too.
