The outside sure as heck DOES look like styrofoam! Yucky inside. I've never seen anything like that, but I'd like to know what it is, too. I'm guessing some kind of fungus.

I call them "stinky mushrooms". If you let it come up through that ground it will put up an orange thingy and look like something alien. And it stinks to high heaven!!! I can smell the stench a mile away so I always dig them up with my trowel and throw it in the woods far away from where I might sit. Gosh they stink! But, I read on the net that if you have those stinky mushrooms you have really good soil.

Looks really ugly. If I found that in my yard, I'd cover it with dirt!

Caged stinkhorn is the one I have in my rose garden.

I'm not joking, the stench wafts across the yard from the tiniest piece coming up from the dirt.

You guys are a hoot!! There is absolutely no smell to this thing at all so I don't think it is a stinky mushroom.I did read the slime mold page and it does seem a bit similar. This thing had a bit of a "tail" which makes me think it is a seed pod of some sort. Even after sitting out and open all night the clear slimmy stuff is still slimmy...so it doesn't appear to dry out easily. I am tempted to plant it and see what happens.
The last time I came across something I wasn't sure of I was opened up to a wonderful world of moths. I had found a large cocoon and in my search I met a great guy who named the moths and showed us some luna moth hot spots in our area.
You just never know where a question might take you..always great to learn something new.
Keep the ideas coming...I'm still searching.

My first thought, because it looks so alien are those pods that grow duplicate people, Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

I agree with debn. I don't think they stink until they break through the ground and turn orange and then PU. Smells like something died!

Looks like the meteor they cracked open on The Blob, only the Blob was red...I think? It was a black and white movie but for some reason I always thought it was red? Maybe it was clear like your blob? Hmmmm....have you seen it lately?

When I woke up this morning I saw from afar something in the yard underneath the birdfeeders. I had no idea what it could be. When I got up to it, I thought it looked like something an animal may have thrown up. The blob I saw looked exactly like pictures 4 and 5 on that site. Ewwwwww it was disgusting looking. I'm glad to know now it's nothing toxic or anything. I don't want my bunnies to get sick that eat under the feeder.

We had some of that slime mold a few times too, and I also thought someone had thrown up in the yard!! lol

Probably the slime mold although I once dug up something very similar... it was some kind of egg pod. I did take it to a nursery to ask. It's common for some insects to lay their egg pods close to the roots of some plants.
