Fantastic! I sent the enlarged pic to my friend, whose mother is a caterer. She has a special order for wedding cupcakes, and said her mother is charging $4 each. That is due to the time spent in preparing and decorating the cupcakes.

I'd guess more around $400+. Just remembering how much my daughter's wedding cake cost back in 1993. It was only a 3-tier, but they were good size. Fondant icing and not a piece left after the reception. Man, that was good cake. It's the only time I've ever seen people go back for seconds on wedding cake.

It is very creative and pretty, can't really determine the size so it is hard to guess the price.

I would say the price would depend upon the location. You just won't get the same price in every area. With that being said, I have no idea how much it would cost. It'd think over $200 but I really don't know. I can also say that while I think this is really neat, I doubt I'd buy it.

Wow - I am amazed at the talent! I kept looking at it and thinking "That is a CAKE?".

Scissors, she said that it was a special order from a customer. She wouldn't have this on the cake shelf waiting for someone to come in and buy it. It is what one person ordered.

I absolutely love it, but even more than that I'm incredulous about her talent. Let's see - given the time she clearly put into it and its uniqueness, I'd guess over $500 - but again, depends upon size.

I emailed her last evening but haven't heard back yet. I know she is up very early baking, so goes to bed early and didn't check her emails.

She sent me the pictures on Wednesday and I did talk to her and I asked her how long it took her to make it. She said it was over a period of 3 days. The "pieces" had to be made and dried before being put together, and the little designs on the bag were painted on with frosting paint. I asked her what kind of cake it was and she said chocolate.

She had not decided on a price when I talked to her: she said it was an "experiment" to her and that it was FUN making it.

Scissors is right about location. She lives about 45 minutes from me, so it's not like big city prices. When I hear back I will let you know.

I'd say at least what patti43 said $400+. Same with suzieque -over $500. Also, it would depend on where she lived and the market would bear and how important those expensive brands are to the recipient. That
in New York might be $800 considering the subject matter too. Very realistic. She could have her own cake show!

It's interesting that the person requested it specifically and it was done without a price attached ahead of time! I'd think that that would be part of the up-front conversation. I hope that, after the price is given to the "orderer" she realizes just how much work went into this and doesn't quibble!

I would say no more than $200. Please don't get my intent wrong, but there are some small imperfections. It's a stunning cake though and I only mention it because the post was about the price. To charge top dollar it has to be flawless. If that's an early effort though, I'd say she's well on her way to be able to charge those huge amounts. :)

I have no idea how much it would cost, but sure would like to have a slice of it! Its beautiful!

Yes, the purse is a cake, too. At first I thought it was a real purse next to a jewel box but in the large picture you can see it is a cake. She did a great job. I was thinking in the neighborhood of $500.00 but I don't know what the traffic will bear in your area. She did a great job. She should probably work on wedding cakes. They're a small fortune!

I think there are several people who don't read complete threads. Maybe not you, Lindakathy, and maybe you do really think that the whole thing is only work far less than $100. To each their own opinion.

I apologize, lindakathy. I did react to your post, because I seriously wondered whether you thought the cake was just the little blue box. I wondered why you termed it as "small"; we don't know. I assumed - without validation, that the purse part is close to actual size; I could be very wrong.

I know that I could never, ever make anything as looking as close (in my opinion) to the real thing; perhaps you have that ability. My reaction was a knee-jerk one to your post which I thought was borderline insulting and diminished the talent, work, and result.

Again, I apologize for putting my reaction to your post in print. Could you help me understand by saying what it is about it that you would look to be better and therefore garner a higher price?

Still haven't caught up with my DGD. When I called her this afternoon there was a problem connecting.

Just watched the local news and saw where the little town where she lives had a power outage earlier today. They showed a power pole that had the top broken and twisted and hanging in the wind.

It's fondant. It would depend on which fondant she uses or whether she makes her own etc. Some commercial fondants are quite expensive (at least the ones that don't taste too bad). I would also want to know what kind of cake it is and whether it is filled and with what and if so how many layers etc. How many does it serve? She would take the cost of the ingredients, her overhead and her hourly rate. The hourly is not the 3 days it took but the time she was actively involved in baking/decorating it.

Finally caught up with my DGD.

The cake purse was a "little smaller than the real purse."

Yes, there was a discussion about price when the request was made. She told the customer she had no idea how to price it, since she had never done one like that, but told her it would be about $100.00.

Remember, she works at home, therefore doesn't have all the expenses that a shop would have.

So when it was finished that is what she charged her, $100.00. She said if she ever did a similar one, it would be more. It was a challenge to her, and she likes a challenge, and it was a learning, fun, experience,

My sister has a bakery and made purse cakes too but not as detailed as your DGD's cake. That is too beautiful to eat by the way. My sister charges between $200-$275 per cake size depending on the details.

Just an FYI- a magazine published locally here in NJ has an article about these beautiful cakes produced by local bakeries. They discussed how time consuming these were to do as well as pricing. Most of these bakeries charge by the slice or person for these custom orders - anywhere from $4 to $10- but require a minimum number of servings- 25 or starting at $150 for a tiered cake and $350 for a sculpted - which is what Sue's GD made. Of course these are bakeries, with storefronts and overhead, but it's a clue to how pricing is determined.
