Speaking of kids...dog related.

We're putting up a solid wood fence between us and the neighbors.Their "dear" grandson keeps picking on my dogs.He calls them out,then rushes at the fence screaming.Of course my dogs run up and down the fence trying to get at him.(It's chainlink now.) Also Rock came in with a cut right below his eye the other week,didn't think much of it.Dogs get hurt sometimes,thought he ran into a stick.Found out from another neighbor that the boy was poking at my dogs with a big stick!She told him to quit,but he didn't. Talked to his mother,didn't do any good,he's just playing.He knows he's doing wrong,if I go out ,he runs and hides. He's only about 6,but still....he needs to be taught better.

So the only solution we came up with is a solid fence.It's almost ready to go up,have to finish staining it tonight.

Cost me close 300 bucks but my peace of mind and my dogs sanity are worth it!

That kid is such a brat! He's the one that chased Spitz into my pond.I like kids,but not brat kids and surely not their Mother that thinks it's funny!!!!

Good for you CR! If his mother isn't going to teach him better or repremand him for poking dangerous sticks at your dogs, what choice did you have. I'd have done the very same thing. I think you will LOVE the privacy fence a lot! Money well spent.

What a sad family that is. That child will only go from bad to worse, without some good intervention. I'm glad you found a solution to protect your poor doggy.

Pal, please do two things: 1) Watch a Bill Engvall video (if you havent already seen the skit that # 2 is referencing) 2) Print out 16 signs and be ready to hand them to these thoughtless women, while saying 'thank you, here's your sign' Seriously - it's abuse, and you dont have to stand for it. Lot's of interactions of a similar nature between women are not of a truly friendly nature, it's glossed over, thinly veiled hostility. Worse, the fact that many of them do this means that it's become part of the cultural norm in the office, which means it is likely to continue until you call a halt to it. Yes, they may respond with shock, etc, but you';ve served as the recipient of their displaced, likely unacknowledged, anger, for quite long enough. Regarding gender, if you were a woman and being treated like this by a man, it wouldn't be considered brotherly kidding on his part, it would be consider mental abuse; in a workplace, it meets the legal criteria for sexual harrassment. I'm not saying they're evil, but they are bullying you, and it should stop. I agree wholeheartedly with Stinky - ask them point blank if they would like you to say the same thing to them., and then walk away. If they go at it again after that (unlikely since it will seriously humiliate them internally to be confronted) respond once in kind, first citing it as an example. Expect them to be angry, to snub you for a while, to talk around the water cooler and in the kitchen about 'what a bad night you must have had' and 'jeez- you must have had a bad day', but also expect it to stop - the snubbing and attempting to laugh it off is a face saving measure but not an indication that they havent taken the warning - just maintain your dignity and professional demeanor, and it will likely end in the workplace being a much less toxic environment. Most of all, realize that it's not really you that is the true focus of their anger and mean behavior - you are the currently convenient, safe scapegoat on whom they are expressing their anger by these back-biting remarks. That's not a role you should accept any longer - your role is to ensure they treat you with the same respect and professionalism you show them. If it means they need to deal with their displaced anger another way, well, that's part of being an adult and living in society. Don't accept their abuse a single day more - if you begin calmly confronting the behavior, it will likely be extinguished in a very short time. Take heart, too, in that there is absolutely nothing you did to encourage this, nothing you did that deserves this, and nothing about this you should accept as normal behavior that you have to endure. And if you want one more laughing way to view taking on a bully, watch A Christmas Story again, paying attention to what happens to the bully when the hero's had enough of being bullied. Then print yourself a couple of signs to hand out at work. ;-) Please let us know that this scenario is getting better for you - no one should have to work or live in this type of environment. - Orchid

That's clear to me. And I do reach out to other mothers in the neighborhood and at church. But they are close by and are friends, so I was hoping to expand this relationship. But I know everyone does the parenting their own way.

I wanted to add on this note, too, who it is exactly that FD thinks should have stepped forward for Jane? Her birthmother ( my mom's first cousin) was 14! This was back in an era when single moms just didn't exist. Having a baby and raising her wasn't an option for the birthmom, as she was just a child herself! The birthfather was also young, 15 when Jane was born. (I might add, he and Jane have almost no relationship today because they just didn't have much of a connection. It IS fortunate and extremely rare that Jane and her birthmom were able to forge such a strong bond. I know it is the rare exception in these situations!) Anyway, so we have ruled out Jane's birthmom having been able to keep her and raise her. Jane's birthmom's mom was a single mom herself---her husband had walked out on the family years earlier, leaving her to go to work and struggle to support her 3 girls. She couldn't have raised Jane's baby, either. She was struggling as it was to take care of her 3 girls, and as it was, my grandparents actually wound up setting up college funds for all three of them. Let's see....my grandparents were around, but at that time, my grandpa was still working; he made a lot of money in his stock options after his retirment, so at that point, while they were well-off, they did not have the assets they do now. They certainly could have afforded to raise Jane, and like I said, I know my grandma really wanted to, but everyone felt it best for ALL involved if Jane went to a family with typical-age parents. They also felt that it would be too awkward and uncomfortable for everyone, including Jane, for her to be raised within the family, but not by her birthmother. They worried about the emotional pain and turmoil that would have caused the birthmom and Jane herself. And really---was it even my grandparents' responsibility???? Why is it FD that you think family members are RESPONSIBLE for someone giving their child up for adoption? If my teenage cousin had a baby today and wanted to give the baby up for adoption, never in a million years would I think I would be obligated to raise that baby. Actually, I would think it kind of presumptuous of me to even SUGGEST the notion. I am thinking of my sweet little 19 year old cousin right now...if she had a baby, and wanted to give the child up for adoption because she felt it was the right choice, I would not FAULT her for that, nor would I even think it was REMOTELY my business! I would offer my love and support in whatever was best, but I would never think that I should step in. I might consider it if she ASKED me to raise her child but I would not bring it up. Who else would there have been that you think "wronged" Jane by not raising her? My mom? My mom was 23 and in grad school, not even married to my dad yet. My uncle? He was in college. Jane's birthmom's sisters? One was in highschool and one was in grade school! I am not sure who these fictional people are who you think should have "wanted" and raised Jane?

We did a similar thing with a fence. No dog problem, but the house next door was a visual eyesore. It was a good move, gave us more privacy and we didn't have to look at the bare dirt and toilet in the front yard. It was costly at 100 feet of fence. Then they caught it on fire piling up their hot fireplace ashes next to it. They are gone now.

What a little brat! He could have just as easily poked your poor dog in the eye! I really have a problem with parents that fail to parent.

Good for you. My parents got me a puppy when I was little. The neighbor kids stoned it to death.

We got 3 sections up tonight,4 to go.It's so dang hot here and we are working on it after work.Should get the rest up tomorrow. They are trying to sell that house because the husband died.But even if it sells soon,I think I'd rather have the fence,what if the new people have bratty kids too? This way,we'll be covered. This fence is more work than we thought.Course we bought the lumber and built our own,saving about 20 bucks a panel to do it that way and looks just like the panels you buy.And it's a 6 ft fence,so should cover all angles! LOL!We're going to do the front yard later.The dogs don't go out front much.
I bet the neighbors won't like the fence,blocks their view down the street.

I wouldn't give a rip that the fence blocks their view. That is so often how serial killers start, torturing animals. Lets hope they soon move away and more importantly the mother gets help for the kid.

I hear ya CR,we went thru the same thing with neighbors quite a few years ago.We raised afghan hounds,and the kids next door were always teasing them as well.Then one day my kids came home from school and called me at work and said,"Mom you need to come home,something is wrong with alfie and sheik.

I rushed home only to find our pretty blonde dogs were covered in something purple,it was also all over the chain link fence,the grass etc.I called the next door neighbor,showed it to her and asked if she knew what it was.Come to find out she had bought this big a** bottle of gentian violet in TJ,and her kids got hold of it and threw it all over the dogs.

I took them to the vet,he said it wouldn't hurt them,but it would take time to wear off.I was glad they weren't hurt,but she wasn't happy when i gave her the vet bill.

If it were me, I'd have a sign at the top of the fence, facing that neighbor:

Any Damage Done To This Fence On This Side Of It Will Be Addressed By A Call To The Police and A Lawyer

That way the little brat's mother will be on notice that she may be amused but you are not.

Awwww! Peaceful day here! Brat kid couldn't see the dogs! (the panels that weren't nailed up were leaned on the fence)
Just makes me so mad! My dogs were always friendly and liked kids,now they sorta rush at him. We're afraid he'll get bit if he reaches through the fence.
Was just to hot today to finish,so we'll try to finish tomorrow.
Purple Afghans...oh my!
This kids sister used to throw nails in our pool when we had it up and stones against the house.Momma apparently doesn't make either one listen to good.

Speaking of kids...dog related.
