How man continous years have you had your children in school?

Just curious... this was my 30th year of enrolling children in school...

Oldest is 35 now, and my "baby" is 17- 6'2, 170lbs, size 14 shoe...finally a senior! I was going to take the first day of school off and just celebrate, but didn't get it on the schedule in time...

My oldest grandson starts kindergarden this year...I guess it is only fitting....

If I counted correctly, I think it is 26 years.

I am only at 11. By the time my youngest graduates, it will be 16 years - not a big gap between the 3.

You certainly have a strapping baby, Pammie! LOL! My youngest is 12 and wears a size 10 shoe, is 5'6" and weighs 125. I think he is on track to be like your baby! He is at the "I'll have 2 hamburgers" stage.

I'm all for education being a "full time job". But what happens when parents aren't capable (OR WILLING, like mine!) to make that happen? How do you imbue kids with the resources to "adapt, improvise, overcome"? Personally, I think that is the more important question. Mericifully, I learned from the 'rents to "live lean". I can "squeeze a dollar 'til it hollers" with the best of them. I think it's important to give allowances. My parents never did that. Aside from occasional baby-sitting gigs, in a very rural town there were no jobs available. If I wanted to go to the movies I had to ASK for the money and justify the popcorn. IT SUCKED. I determined that once I had a job I'd never "go beggin'" again. How my practical parents missed the importance of an allowance escapes to to this day. Work=gain. Pure and simple. I was never able to hold a job until I was 18 (there were no jobs in my town and my work/study job the first one I have had!). Use of the family car was purely discretionary. MY use of it was predicated on my GPA. Straight As earned a sizeable insurance break... and use of the car! I may not have paid for the insurance increase, but I damn sure EARNED the "break". A speeding ticket or ticket for a moving violation would have grounded me for between 60-90 days. A car was NOT a "god given right" when I began driving, it was a priviledge, subject to parental vagaries, lol. My parents did a CRUMMY job of imparting to me the most fundamental aspects of establishing a "budget". They did it wonderfully themselves and I was a good "study", but they failed woefully when it came to actually TALKING about money and its management. Talking about money was like talking about sex... everything was cloaked in time-honored "mystery". A total fu**kin' waste of time! A HS student who works should pay "room and board". Put the money in an account for them (identify this as "savings" while stressing the importance of rationing a paycheck!). Talking about money and how to use it for your greater benefit is crucially important. Money is a TOOL, something we all have to use. Learning how to use it effectively begins with "baby steps"... savings, budgets, forestalling immediate gratification. The sooner kids learn that it costs money to live, work, and how to provide for that, the better off they will be in long run. They need to be informed that you have to take care of the BASICS before you can begin to "blow money". Savings. Basic budget. Fun money. I'm 47, with no kids. I've paid every note I've assumed before the term was up. I've never bounced a check. I work in the "trades"; work ethic was part and parcel of the way I was raised. But it would have been a lot less stressful had I been given the basic outline before I was 18. For me, it was as though I was dropped into the "deep end"; needlessly frightening and stressful. Years later I've only just become comfortable with the notion that I can actually SPEND money on something other than basic necessities. You shouldn't have to be honest, hard-working, and in your 40s to feel comfortable with your finances. This feeling was an option for me 20+ yrs. ago, but I was too afraid of money then!

I'm not sure *I* am turning out the way I had hoped! LOL. I only have one in that age group, and he's only 12. But I like him so far. I think I'll keep him. I want a growth chart for the emotional/personality stuff. We have check ups with docs and dentists, eye exams, even before we think something is wrong. Even teachers conferences and standardized tests to tell us they are learning the academics they should be learning, or if intervention is needed. So I think it would be very helpful to have check ups with a counselor of some sort. Not therapy exactly, just a set of questions, a test of sorts, to say yep, they are on the right track. To know that self confidence, responsibility, ambition, compassion... those sorts of qualities... are developing normally. It is so important to how kids turn out, but how do I know for sure it's happening along the way at the rate it should be?? I want that sort of check up. I'd rather their personality be straighened out that their teeth. But it's easier to find out their teeth are crooked. It's hard to be objective about the emotional stuff, so I need a chart. I'm only half joking. If there is a chart, I seriously want it!

SD10 has come from a family in Ca. that stops everything for the children. They actually run wild. Not something that I am used to at. Although SD10 is not wild, she is very well behaved, she does retain that "I am the most important person in the room" attitude. She has made progress and as her daddy makes progress (LOL) I think she will do much better. She made a comment after arriving here that sums it up quite adequitly I think. She was dead serious when she remarked..."I'm just not right anymore!"....She had never been challenged before she moved in with us. So here is a 13 year old boy and a 17 year old girl and myself refusing to be told how life works by a 7 year old....pretty funny. Dad would just let her have her way, she ran the show. Having her home for the holiday break is giving me a chance to work on things. She is limited now to 2 hours of TV unless we do a movie or something extra. She and I have played on the Wii together and she spent time at a friend's house. She was drawing in the living room when I came in here to post. I had a long talk with DS16 last night and he is missing the "old" days before I remarried. It has been difficult for him to accept SD's age/behavior. But then of course he was the youngest before she came along. I was quite sad about it, did a lot of crying and then decided that he and I should have a date night every so often. SD and dad could do a date night on the same night and that would give her his undivided attention. As far as extra activities....she is in an extra math and science class twice a week, private violin lessons once a week and church youth group once a week. We do trips to the library.....she loves to read. We also do church every Sunday and she is in Sunday school there. She has a pretty well rounded life. I do want to make sure that I am not picking on her. I know that she is doing what she has been taught and what has worked for her before the remarriage. I have to teach DH how to be part of family and not an outstanding individual so to speak. I don't mean that disrespectfully. Family dynamics from childhood play a big part in it, both on his side and mine. I remember my first SD being the same way and she was an only child not to mention the grandparents favorite. I had never seen adults stop what they were doing to watch a child dance until I met her. She wasn't even taking lessons. I thought...ok...when are we just going to sit and watch her breath!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was raised in a household where kids were to be seen and not heard and most of the time nobody even wanted to see you.

How long have you had your hair style?

For too long. I have very thick, coarse hair with a natural curly/wave. I don't suit it very short - besides, I would need to have it cut every week - it grows like a weed. I greyed in my 20s and am now 63. The grey is iron grey and my complexion is yellow - but this is not apparent until someone holds certain colours against me - then it sure is. And of course my natural hair colour was auburn - I am of Irish heritage. Only colour that suits me - I have tried on wigs in other colours - awful. And red fades. I have my hair cut in layers and keep it a few inches below my ears (when my hair dries after being wet it curls "up" so I need to makes sure that I still have those few inches to peak out from under my hat - and I always wear a hat - red fades). It is very expensive to have it coloured in Toronto - and I do not have highlights - hair is so coarse it appears to be highlighted anyway. I do try and extend the colouring by wearing said hats and basically have it done every 8 weeks - unless I am going somewhere say at week 5 where I have to take my hat off. Not everyone can cut my type of hair. Unfortunately the best colour for me is Goldwell - not cheap. I recently (due to a funeral) had to go to a different salon since my colourist does not work certain days of the week. They used L'Oreal Professsional - which is a good colour product, but apparently I am now allergic to the current formulation. Wonderful. And to think I used to do it myself before the colour was d/c'd. And of course with so much grey now I would not want that tell-tale 2 inch patch of off-colour auburn. I do use a curl enhancement product - but it is hard to find one that is not for fine, thick hair. I need strength in the product.

We kind of spread them out...1974, 1976......1986, 1992!
He is really a picky eater..not like most teens I've known.
My hubby's family is none under 6'2 and most not under 200lbs. I have the skinny boys..nephews were all wrestlers and football players!
I just wonder if I will miss sending the schools money next year...NOT! Hopefully he will be getting himself up for college classes! Then I WILL take some time off!

My middle son has been in school since he was 3 - he's now 35! LOL He went to preschool, grade school, high school and college - he has earned 13 college degrees - now finishing up his PhD in psychology. He loves going to school!

My youngest is 19 and has been in school since he was 5 - he's taking this semester off from college - he'll probably graduate when he's 40, because he's basically lazy - he will probably live with me, work part time and go to school part time - it's a sweet deal for him.

Since I have only 1 child it is easy for me to add... kindergarten + 12 years + 2 years of college + starting her third year.. so we are on the 16th year.

We had 22 years, from 1981 to 2003, and last week I enrolled our 3 year old granddaughter in preschool! Here we go again! Right now we have her everyother week for a full week at a time, now we will have her for 3 days a week every week, maybe more.

Started in 1993 when my older daughter entered kindergarten, and she's still in school. Fall term begins next Monday. Aug 31.

Oldest started preschool in about 1977, and youngest finished lawschool and bar review school in 2008. There were a couple of years there between his bachelor's from UC Berkeley and starting his masters at NYU that he worked, but then he went right on to law school.

I always kept count of 2 things--how many years straight that we used a diaper pail with no let up (10) and how many years straight we had someone at the neighborhood elementary school (13).

Ours are only 1 year apart, so 14 years K-Senior. Seems so long ago yet it was only 4 years ago.

I think 23 if my math is right. Our youngest starts his last year of HS tomorrow. Seemed like we would never see the day.

Twenty four years and this is our last year. We think. DS, who was not as studious as his sister while in high school, has become very focussed on building a future and keeps going to school. We did not expect this from him...lol!

If I count it all, this was the 13th year I enrolled at least one child in school. It was 1997 when the oldest was enrolled in preschool. He is a HS junior now. The youngest is in 2nd grade now, so I have 10 more years to finish him out of the school system. Add another 4 assuming college down to the last one. So when it's done, that'd make 27 years.

I'll have to celebrate the end of this semester. 13 1/2 years and I'll be half done! ;o)

I never thought about counting the college years! We have 2 years before those start. Now that will not be a fun check to write! We will have 12 years of college tuition to pay - we will pay for 4 years at one of the 3 state uni's. Anything above and beyond that - they are on their own. DD#1 will probably be able to enter as a sophmore - hope the other two can do the same - then we will only have to pay for 9! That would be a HUGE savings!

29 years and I'm not finished.

I have 3 kids, my eldest started nursery school in 1981 and and I have one who will be starting his last year of law school next week.

So it will be 30 when he's done. Please, please pray that my daughter doesn't decide to go to grad school next September.

So change my 22 to 28.

1. BUT the oldest didn't go to pre-school or Kindergarten (that would have tacked on another 3-4 yrs.) Youngest has a Master's, older 3 have Bachelor's.

36 K-16. 52 semesters of college (two kids each took 5 years). They TA'd their ways through grad schools. 2009 was the first year someone wasn't in school somewhere, but the eldest grandchild started kdg so we still marked the occasion.

For many years we scrambled between taking kids to different colleges, others to high school, more to grade school, and never missed an event at any of them over the years...band concerts, football, baseball, soccer games, swim meets, awards nights, plays, pto meetings. I thought I'd miss the frenzy, but I don't...we're enjoying this August immensely.
