A purely selfish post

I don't know if anyone saw this or not, or the post by jel48, that followed it, because it fell off to page 2. This was very meaningful to me, so I am resending it.

On Sunday I was treated to a delightful day out. My DD, my DGD and her DH and my 11 year 0ld DGGS took me to the Riverside Center Dinner Theater, in Fredericksburg, VA. a pleasant two hour drive from here.

The Center was built for the purpose and it is just lovely, with beautifully set tables, cosy lighting and tiered seating, so everyone has a good view of the stage. Some of the waiters are also actors in the play.

The play? The Phantom! I have seen the movie (twice) but this production is based on Gaston Leroux's novel The Phantom of the Opera, which is considered by critics as eminently equal to its more famous Andrew Lloyd Webber's version. I have to admit my ignorance in that I did not know that, and I also learned that there was a movie in 1943, with Claude Rains, and Nelson Eddy.

This was the most gratifying day I've had for a long time. I had had a rough time from January to May, health wise, and I'm still dealing with some of it. My "kids" planned this and surprised me with it, and it was just perfect!

I'm new to this area & haven't yet met fellow gardeners (a bit shy) so I really miss the plant sharing. Back in the old place where I lived over 30 years I gave & received tons of plants. I *blush* populated the front yards of my neighborhood with peach brugs after friends oohed & aahhed over a magnificent specimen in our yard that reached roof-top height. That whole yard was populated with shared plants. The guy that built the house & the previous owner had been plant enthusiasts. Every time I planted some unusual seeds from J.L. Hudson or Thompson & Morgan I'd share extras with my plant pals. Things I had an inexhaustible supply of were shell ginger, dancing ladies & pinecone gingers, physostegia, orchid trees, kumquats, queen's crown, crossvine, monkeygrass, airplane plant (we grew it outside as a neat bedding plant), plumeria, brugs, honeysuckle, esperanza, ruella, bamboos--oh, so many things, I'm tired of typing. I had a friend on acreage nearby & I'd regularly haul her a pickup load & return with one, too. Finding Gardenweb was a treat when I got into roses big time. I had one trader pal in particular that would exchange CRATES of the most wonderful plants with me. We had similar tastes & climate zones & we had a ball swapping. And there is something so special about the most ordinary plant that is given as a gift. I treasure the few I have left from grandmothers, aunts, uncles & friends--maidenhair fern from great-grandmother, Louisiana iris from Grandma, kalanchoe from Mamaw, etc. None are rare or unusual varieties, just a link with loved ones who are gone. So I suppose there is an element of selfishness in sharing or trading--the thrill of collecting, the insurance of spreading an endangered variety around. Like J. L. Hudson's logo: a Steller's jay flying with an acorn in its mouth & the motto: "preservation through dissemination". But it's a selfishness that benefits others ;) I hope to meet some local gardening folks who will enjoy discussing & sharing plants as much as my Gardenweb pals.

We did try a rescue dog but returned him - he would get excited and piddle (not tiny piddle but big dog piddle). You could not move w/o him getting excited and definitely not leave the room and come back into it. We would always have to run him outside to help control his excitement piddles. As far as being tied down with 15 yr commitment, I a fine with that - I am 51 yrs old so running around is not on my agenda. Plus I need to get out more and walk/exercise and having to take a puppy/dog will make me when I do not really wish to go. As far as only wanting a Keeshond, I guess some of it could be because we have had one before - but we also had border collie and a mutt which was dumped off at a local dumpster. The rescue we had was a golden retriever and all three of these types of dogs required more activity where as a Keeshond will be active it the owner wants to be but will also be content with walks should the owner choose that route. They also are not real bad about barking, great with children and other pets plus extremely smart and train/learn easily.

So your daughters are withholding access to your grandchildren because your wife doesn't want to babysit them? Sounds like something is missing in this story. My kids' grandparents don't have the means to indulge their grandchildren materially, and they are elderly and inactive, but grandparents provide intangible benefits so much more important than entertainment. Growing up, I had one set of grandparents with a pool, they were active and had an energetic household. The other set were loving and gentle and milder in temperament. One grandma played tennis, the other liked to snuggle and sit and talk. I loved them both, and cannot imagine begrudging one set for not being like the other. The momma bear in me wonders if your wife isn't perhaps a source of worry to your daughters, making them concerned for their children's well-being in your home. An untrustworthy or unkind grandparent would be the only reason I can imagine that parents of young children would keep grandparents at arm's length. A pastor or family counselor can give you much better insight and strategies to foster a closer family dynamic.

Morph? Never have I ever gotten into a conversation with anyone ever about urea. I don't ever remember having any conversation with you, frankly, so I don't know what your issue is. You have made it sound like you and I had a dust-up about urea. I'd point out that Maine is the largest producer of wild blueberries in the world and we aren't new to the crop. At this time, I'm going to stick with the known and proven conventions. We're not so hickey that we don't have our own talented soil scientists. I just lost a whole long post... I have several varieties of vaccinium in the field, westes, but the primary berry, the one we encourage, is angustifolium. I'm going to keep editing in case I lose the post. Here's my field. From the east, it looks like a Santa boot with a rock wall resembling a fur cuff. It's a dead end private road and I wouldn't encourage any more traffic than I already get with blueberry thieves sneaking in---mostly my neighbors and their children. Here's another picture of a local field in the fall, not mine. See how pretty it is? Glyphosate. My brother and I butted heads about the woods. He wanted the fir and pines gone and hardwoods encouraged, which I was prepared to do, except I didn't want skidders on the land.

Sue, If I am not mistaken, my husband's nephew isplaying in that play. I know its a musical in Fredricksburg that he is in. He is 16 and has real curly black hair, & tan complexion. I haven't been yet, but sister in law wants us to go.

I just listened to some of the beautiful music from your link and read the menu. What a wonderful surprise from your family!

I do hope you are on the road to recovery and will be posting photos of some of your granddaughter's amazing creations again soon.

Sue, it's easy to tell how much this special day meant to you. That's wonderful you were treated to such an entertaining play and experience. Hope you have many more.

And you're not being selfish at all. :)

I thank all of you for reading and replying to my "selfish" post. I am not prone to posting about my aches and pains, or every little stubbed toe or bug bite. This winter, though, I went through and still managing, a terrific time of something that is still not actually diagnosed. So happened that last Fall, we had a new Family Practice doctor come to this area, just a couple miles from me, so I went to see him, hoping to change from the one several miles away, who doesn't have privileges at our hospital. Not to get into details, but this doctor really didn't seem to know what he was doing. He is no longer there, he no longer has privileges at our hospital, and the hospital is trying to find a replacement. Enough of that; I am doing much better, but it surely has slowed me down.

Rita, it was absolutely wonderful, especially because my kids planned it.

Susan, yes, they succeeded!

WmsbrgJane, I have the complete program with a list of the actors, with photos. There is a young curly haired man, or boy, named Ian. Could that be him? Do go and enjoy a time out. I promise you won't regret it.

Tobygirl, yes, delightful music! I am improving, but not fast enough to suit me! I haven't posted any of the cupcakes lately, just a little lazy. Since you asked though I will gather some up and post them before long. Also an update on the business.

Gemini, yes, I enjoyed every minute of it. It is one of those productions where you feel a part of it.

Marilyn, we never get to old for surprises. This one was truly great.

Granlan, you are so kind, but I did question myself about that post, but I so wanted to share this loving, thoughtful gift from my family, and would like to think that others are so lucky.
