My interior doors are all 32 inches except for the bathrooms - they are 30.

The projects never stop do they Caroline? What are you going to do with yourself once your house is all done? LOL! I would love to remodel both of our bathrooms.

Betsy, once this house is finished, and I've unpacked all the boxes from my move of last year, I'm going to sit in the corner, rock slowly back and forth, and hum to myself...for about six months. LOL

Then, I'm going into the sewing room with a cup of tea, sit on the (still imaginary) parlor chair and plan a lovely quilt project, and a purse project, and several pin cushion projects, and watch the birds out of the tall window, with Harry by my side.

I'll be grateful for what I have, and what I could do, and not worry about what had to be put on (probably permanent) hold.

My interior doors are all 36 inches. Looking ahead when we made up the plans for this house (it is a modular) we knew that a wheel chair would be in the future for me. The builder insisted that 36" doors is the way to go for wheel chair manuverability. Go with the biggest doors you can possibly work in to the existing structure. You never know when you may need that extra width. A bigger bathroom door is a real must for a handicapped person. So what if it doesn't match the other doors. When ya gotta go, ya gotta go!

Not wide enough!LOL We live in a double wide mobile home and have standard m/h size doors,narrower ones in the bathrooms.Why do they do that? All doors are too narrow to maneuver a handicap scooter or even a walker through easily and bathroom doors even harder.Had we been able to order what we wanted when we bought this home we would have gone for at least 32,preferably 34 inch doors throughout.You might want to think ahead to a time when you might need wider doors for handicap equipment when installing yours.

All of ours are 3' wide, and I love it!

In our last home, we had two bathrooms. Neither door was wide enough to get a wheelchair through.

I am 100% in agreement with Gazania. Even if the bathroom is too narrow to be fully accessible it is really helpful for the door to be wide enough for wheelchair or walker to pass through. When DS was in a wheelchair and walker after a motorcycle accident for several months he was barely able to squeeze through our 28" bathroom door. Our bathroom bath is too narrow for full accessibility also but the first change we will make as we remodel it will be to put in a wider door. For us it means converting to a pocket door since there is not enough room for door swing into the narrow (5') room.

My first thought was 'not wide enough!' as I'd banged my elbow trying to walk thru it while trying to pull a shirt on -- and had my elbows up to my shoulders - wing-like --

Go as wide as possible & do ask about pocket doors or this house we have has a couple of doors that are 'french' and it is 2 doors that open up from the middle... but they do take up 'wall space' ....

Definitely make it W I D E . It will be so helpful some day.

If you want to get a wheelchair in there ...

... better pucker up.

Five steps up from the back door, in any case ... four concrete up from the grass at the front, plus about 4" door-sill.

Six steps down from back door to basement.

Between lavatory door handle and bathtub - 22", and door opens to just past edge of lavatory, reducing space to about 21" ... toilet is beyond that.

Better pucker even further!

I'm curious why you say the bathroom cannot be made handicapped accessible? If necessary, the tub can be replaced with a walk-in (my sister did that in her house, for no reason other than she liked the look). Or, alternatively, there are companies who can cut a section of a regular tub away, and refinish, so it's more accessible to someone who is not as agile as they once were (my mom's apt. building had that done for her when she could no longer 'climb' into the tub). Maneuvering a wheel chair in a small room might be a challenge, but I'd think that in a pinch, it would be possible to at least go straight in, and back out, if necessary.

So, I'd go with the wider door.

Side note--I've got that quilt laid out on my new sewing room floor, in my new house (where I have almost no furniture in any of the rooms yet, since we're still in transition, too). Hope your quilt is as lovely as mine is turning out! And best of luck with the new place--we're at the same stage--deciding what to fix, how to fix it, and trying to figure out where to put all the stuff in all the boxes.....
