I find that the dishwasher makes most aluminum muffin pans discolor and get darker, some get really bad. I would wash those by hand.

I agree, and the detergent sometimes pits aluminum. Soak em to make a quicker job of it on your feet.

Sue, I use some tall stools in my kitchen as I have the same aches as you do. It really helps to sit while doing some chores that you can. I have two in my kitchen that I use, so you might see how that would work for you. I love my dishwasher. I have only had it since this past Thanksgiving. It does a great job.

Sorry to sound so bossy, but you should not be using Aluminum cookware at all. Why do you think all skillets are lined now days. I knew it was unsafe as a very young person. Buy stainless steel.

Aluminum is soft and stains easily, but it is a good conductor of heat. So they clad it in stainless steel, which is durable, doesn't stain easily, but also does not conduct heat evenly.

When I had a broken leg, I got a rolling stool from ebay. It has no back and raises and lowers. I used to roll all around the kitchen. I don't know how I would have survived without it. I think I got it on ebay.

Muffin pans were hand washed and I survived! I've also survived many years of cooking in aluminum pans.

Today, scientific experts agree that aluminum cookware does not cause Alzheimer's. As for the amounts of aluminum entering foods through cookware, the FDA offers this perspective:

* Aluminum is the third most common element in the earth's crust. It is widespread in foods.
* A person using aluminum-containing antacids (at about 50 mg/tablet) may consume as much as 1,000 mg of aluminum per day.
* A person using uncoated aluminum pans for all cooking would take in 3.5 mg/day.
* The FDA states that our ordinary use and consumption of aluminum is entirely safe.

I sometimes sit at the table to do some mixing, peeling, chopping, etc., but I don't know if I could get used to a stool or not.

I found a stool a while ago that's a bit shorter than the height of the table ... just measured it: it's 25" high ... that has a slightly padded swivel top, 11-3/8" across.

When I went to the bedroom to get the tape, rather than reaching high and twisting a knob on the wall sconce, I walked over to the bedside table to get the flashlight, a flat one with a squeeze-handle on the side that recharges the battery, that I like to bring out here daily to find my way to the bedroom without stubbing my toes after I turn out the lights.

I find that, though my back does some complaining at times when I'm readjusting the tendrils on the bean vines, straddling a row of beans to pick them, or stand too long washing dishes, it's not really giving me substantial trouble.

I think that I'll try using the stool when washing dishes: the only dishwasher available here is the ten-fingered one.

I got some extra space in the frig last night, as I've not washed dishes for a while - I'd put a margarine container and a yogurt container that I'd emptied in there to keep them from going mouldy while awaiting washing, and had about a dozen mugs that had been used and dropped here and there ... so I freed up some counter space, as well.

When my bread machine quit the other day, I borrowed son's aluminum loaf pan and used a glass pie plate to make the loaf of bread that I'd started.

I use a dishrag, not a mop, so the water is only as hot as a hand can stand.

At one time they published a report that when they autopsied Alzheimer's brains they found to much aluminum in them. A week later they reported that the report was a mistake and after that all aluminum pans came out lined. I don't see anymore aluminum pans that are not lined with something. I still feel like it is dangerous. I did not know one single person with AZ when I was younger, now it is rampant. I wish I had kept the research I found when my husband was diagnosed with AZ. It was written by the top immunologist in the country. He said AZ was rampant due to the aluminum in flu and pneumonia shots. He said one day the care homes will run out of room for AZ patients and they will be living on the streets. When my doc found out I had an indigestion problem, she said, "never take anti acids again, they have alum in them." Don't you think these cookware companies would still be making alum pans if it were safe. They do cook better than any metal around.

Restaurant supply places still sell heavy aluminium pans, unlined. I suspect the reason you see them lined now is more a function of people preferring (or the manufacturers seeing them as preferring) lined pans.
I imagine the reason you didn't know anyone with AZ in your youth is because they have only recently begun calling it that as a usual thing. Previously it was "senility", "senile dementia" and other terms. And, a smaller proportion of the population got old enough for it to be a big problem. Like in the old days, no one had "stokes", they had "apoplexy".
Getting back to the cake pans, my boss at work won't let us put the aluminium trays and pots in the dishwasher as the detergent discolours them. We have to hand scrub.
