First- the local bag lady. She's a little nutsy in the head, but basically harmless if you don't count being scratched by her long, dagger-like fingernails when she's agitated. (Geh, I need new flooring in that bathroom, it's yellowing.)

"Mom? Wut's this thing do? Spins greens? What are greens?"

"How duz it werk? Are you sure? Around and around, why? I don't think I unnerstand."

"Well, if you say it's safe.....is this an E-ticket ride or wut? I think I'm tall enough and I weighed 3 pounds, 13 oz this morning at the vet's- just let me fasten my belt. OK. I'm ready!"

And peat is the product of long-dead plants; it is not a renewable source. In good conscience I cannot reccomend using peat moss. A similar benefit can be obtained by using "coir" which is made from coconuts and *is* a renewable product, although not as acidic as peat. I agree with Rhizo in that sand is not necessarily a good amendment. The center suggested it because many believe sand is good to "lighten" the soil -- that means loosen the clay structure enough so that there are minute spaces in it for air and water. If you use the wrong type of sand, it will percolate downwards and not be of much use. It is easier and more practical to lighten the soil with chunky bits of organic material such as coarse sawdust, coarse wood chips or bark. The secondary advantage is that those wood products will eventually decompose which improves the soil fertility. Vermiculite and perlite are more effective in lightening the soil structure, but there is controversy as to how "green" the manufacturing process is. Gypsum can be used throughout much of the US, and is an excellent long-term method of loosening heavy clay. Check with the manufacturer to see if it is of use in your area; if so, apply at their suggested rate. Watering is variable according to your plants' needs + your actual rainfall. The general rule of thumb is irrigate enough more so that rainfall plus irrigation equal one inch of water per week. Plants have a great deal of difficulty reaching and absorbing the water in clay, which is why they may look withered even though you have irrigated. The only cure is to improve the soil so the plants can actually get a drink. Once clay does absorb water, the clay seems to "grab a-hold" of it, which means that not only do the plant not get enough to drink, the roots may be sitting in mud which is very bad for them -- unless they are bog-dwelling plants. Turn your bulbs around as soon as you can. Most bulbs won't make much of an effort to grow if they are upside down -- I think that has something to do with the sprouts heading for the source of light-heat: if you point the tip (sprout end) down then you are aiming them away from the sun. Read up on lasagna. Your kitchen scraps can go into your in-progress lasagna bed (and if you don't have one in progress yet, you probably will soon) or you can use another method. The point is to have a mix of wet [fresh scraps] and dry [shredded paper, dry leaves, etc] in almost even portions mixed 50/50 with soil. I use an old garbage can and build the compost by always wrapping the kitchen scraps in several layers of newspaper and then covering them with an equal volume of soil or sawdust (depending on the season). Twice a year I empty the can into the garden. It will be mostly compost; I bury the top portion which has the freshest scraps. The summer can will have had some weeds ( I mulch so there aren't very many weeds) and soil, the winter can is mostly scraps and sawdust. Both will have lots of worms in the bottom section when I dump the can. You *can* buy commercial composters or commercial vermicomposters, but I'd rather spend my money on new plants or more bulbs -- we each choose what we prefer :)

We've had the Bosch Axxis+ 2460 washer and Axxis 3510 dryer for 4 years. Absolutely love the washer. I've never had cleaner laundry. The dryer has trouble keeping up with the washer. In fact, the clothes from the washer almost always have to wait on the dryer. It was checked twice pretty early on by a Bosch repair person who said it was working as it was designed to. He put in a new control board just for good measure. He even took the dryer back to the shop and ran tests. Results were - working as supposed to. We've since learned to adapt and have begun to prefer taking clothes out a little damp - much less shrinkage. The newer Axxis dryers may dry a little better and may be larger. We think the problem may be that the dryer drum isn't much larger than the washer tub. The dryer has a 13 lb. capacity. There's a very helpful forum member and Bosch prod manager named bsh_chris who advised us that the 3510 dryer was pretty old European technology, so the newer model you're considering probably works better. We haven't had a Miele, but right now are deciding between the 700 Bosch series and the new 4.0 capacity Miele. We actually gave an LG a try, but it doesn't come close to cleaning as well as the Bosch. The 2460 cleans so well that we've never used bleach; in fact using bleach would void the warranty on this model. But we don't need it anyway. I swear I can get coffee stains out of white bar towels with just detergent and using the cotton/temp boost cycle. And the power wash option is AWESOME! It brings the water in cold, then gradually heats it to the temp you selected, washing awhile at each level. So if you choose power temp boost as your temp, cold water comes in and it washes cold, then heats to warm and washes awhile, then heats to hot and washes, then to temp boost and washes, then to power temp boost. I no longer worry at all when I splash spaghetti sauce or salad dressing on myself. :-) The small Mieles have that as well, I believe. I don't know anything about the Miele dryer, but I've never heard anyone complain. Most people on this forum don't seem to care much about dryers unless they make thumping noises. :-) I don't think you'd be disappointed with either set. If money is totally not an option, I'd probably go for the Miele. They have such a great reputation and good build quality and probably will outlive the Bosch. Both Miele and nearly every Miele owner I've read threads by will tell you to expect it to last 20 years. The Bosch is a lot more plasticky, but that's never been an issue for us. The sales rep we got it from told us it would probably last 10 years. I tell you this, though, if I could only choose between my itty bitty Bosch and the LG, I'd keep my Bosch and never look back. As for the floor, we have a wood subfloor over a crawl space, and once properly leveled, have never had an issue with vibration. In fact, I'm amazed it doesn't vibrate more than it does considering how fast it spins. Our home was built in 93. The washer does sound like a turbine engine though, very high pitched and required some getting used to. We got used to it pretty quickly. I'm not sure if the Miele is the same. For the duct work, our dryer manual recommends a maximum duct length of 15 ft for flexible duct and 22 ft for rigid with ONE ELBOW. I don't think the initial bend really counts. There are some interesting threads on this forum about venting you should probably check out. I'm not familiar with the Miele having a problem with water pressure. Our pressure isn't the best, but the Bosch has never had problem because of it. I can't tell you much about stacking. Hope some of this info helps you out. We're in the same boat you are, trying to decide whether or not to spend an extra $1000 for the large Miele based on reputation alone, or save the $1000 and get the Bosch based on personal experience. Hmmm...when I put it like that it almost seems like a no brainer. Maybe you helped me more than I helped you. ;-) And you thought YOUR post was long!

1) Bottom drains are not required in residential pools but are very useful to have. If you ever need to dump water below the skimmer, it's a PITA without one. If, for any reason, the water drops below the skimmer, without a drain line that the pump can run off, you can't easily run the pump to circulate. The question I have about company #1 is will they be putting in two drain pots ties together. Unless the existing drain is tied to the skimmer, that type of modification may require two drains, three feet apart. This is as the result of a relatively new law called the Virginia Graham(SP) Baker Act of 2007, or VGB 2007. This is law created some Federal requirements for swimming pool construction. One part states that there may no longer be constructed any submerged suction outlets that have a single source of suction or shall be be large enough that a person cannot block it and become entrapped under water due to suction. Additionally, the covers for these suction outlets shall have passed a testing procedure and proven effective against entanglements, such as could happen with long hair or necklaces to a specified flow rate. The above work can be done without it screwing up the pool's integrity. Is it easy, no. If it was, Grandma would have done it. If the existing drain is fine, leave it and replace it's cover with a new VGB compliant cover. Since the old style is no longer available in the US legally, it does make the existing one safer. There is no requirement that I know of that requires retrofitting the new construction codes to existing residential pools except during certain repairs. Permanently sealing off an existing single main drain suction outlet is permitted. Replacing a single drain with a similarly sized one, assuming we're talking about a standard 9" drain, must be turned into a dual drain unless the single drain is tied at the skimmer so as to prevent a single source of suction underwater. It's a mouth full, I know. Sorry, but the VGB act is a good thing in that it helps make pools and spas much safer. 2) Pebble Tec's standards and controls are much stricter. This makes it a better product. 3) Hydraulic=oil . Leaks happen and can be messy and costly. Clean up can be costly. I prefer the rope and pulley systems that pull the cover along it's tracks and then use a direct drive to turn the spindle that reels the cover back. 4) I would be concerned with how the artificial and dog pee/poop and potential staining and odors. Within the last 10 years we have gone thru 3 different W/D First was top loader Fisher and Paykel W/D, not too bad, but after 3 years mechanically failed, quiet machine. 2nd was a highly rated front loaders Whirlpool (go green). what a horrible, horrible mistake. Hubby does the washing and finally had to hook up a hose from the shower to the washer to add water, was funny at the beginning, but as time went by, the frustration was growing, clothes was not coming out clean and it took longer to do a load of wash more than anything. After a year, we finally gave in a starting researching for another W/D, ran into SQ. The sky opened and the sun came out. Never saw a happier husband, who loves to wash clothes. The price for the W/D was less than 1/2 what we paid for the Whirlpool, and this was on the higher end residential model. We were able to sell our whirlpool front loaders to someone who was really looking for our model (rated high), we lost money in the sale, but was happy to get rid of it. Immediately noticed a difference in towels and clothes, came out cleaner, no more shower hook up for water. I think many people forget about SQ and they don't realize that they have been in the commercial business (laundry mats) for a long long time, can you imagine the abuse those machine takes. Recently had a friend who was convinced to buy a Samsung several years ago and is now running into issues with their machine. Even the repair man told them that he would not have bought a Samsung. They tried selling the Samsung and a used dealer used he wouldn't touch or buy that machine at all, he highly recommended a SQ and if my friend was selling a used SQ he would have bought that from him in a snap! The wife and I are laughing, because she wanted the SQ but he decided to listen to a salemans. He is now buying the SQ and had to donate his Samsung, because no one wants to buy it. SQ for a happy life!

My cat loves to get into the laundry basket. He has scared the beejeebers out of me on more than one occassion when I go pick up the basket and there's 2 very annoyed eyes staring back at me! I guess you could say that he's a basket case.

Roxie loves getting inside everything as well. Loves the laundry basket, the cloth grocery bags, boxes, the linen closet, inside the kitchen cupboard.....NP2 would be a good name for her!

I guess those salad spinners aren't designed for such heavy, unbalanced loads because when I tried to give her a spin, it just dragged. DANG IT! I wanted a photo of a white blur. lol Hey, it's not torture if you're willing to do it yourself, too! If I could fit.... here, Woody- pull this cord!

I've made a couple of LOLcats out of 2 of her better photos, but I guess they didn't deem them worthy enough. I love that site, though, I never fail to get a laugh. Things like this just crack me up.

Thanks again! We love our Nosey Parker to pieces, even when she tries to cook us in our sleep. I woke up the other night to find her stretched out across my neck like a muffler, purring her little brains out. I could barely breathe, my neck is still cricked and I think my temp spiked at about 105, but I certainly didn't move her off of me! No way, she was using me so well! rofl Now I know what a hot flash is going to feel like!
