My Head is Spinning....
Comments (18)Thankfully, when we built the house, we went with high-end cabinets, doors, and windows (my ex was/is very into wood). All of the cabinets in both the kitchen and baths are in great shape and still look very good. I'm going to change the hardware but that's all that's needed. The downstairs bath is a full bath with a tile floor (very plain 9"X9" tile). The lighting fixture still looks good but after 19 years I'm looking for something different. The upstairs bath probably would need the most work. The tub/toilet is in an enclosed area separate from the sink area. It's very dark and holds too much moisture. I'd like to cut down the enclosing walls by half (like the wall in a pass-through kitchen). I want quality, but I don't need top-of-the-line. My house appraises on Zillow for $317,000, but is probably worth more like $350,000. As far as I can tell, the highest priced home in the neighborhood is approximately $475,000. My house has the potential to be lovely and structurally needs no real modifications. But right now it's definitely very plain and very, very tired looking. I'm just unsure as to the correct order for getting this "updating" accomplished. I want quality, but I don't need top-of-the-line. Comments (0)Hi everyone, A few months back I decided to go with IKEA cabinets (which came out to about $6K. I shopped around with some local cabinet makers but they were all more than twice as much. Then I met with Yorktowne Cabinet dealers and they offered their Silver like for roughly $8-9K. The trick is that IKEA will cost about $4K in installation while Yorktowne is only $1500. Then, someone told me about Costco AllWood cabinets. They are about $8K (already assembled) plus the labor to install them. I've read about other cabinet makers on this site and that seems to widen the choices as opposed to help me figure out what to do. My main concern is to get a budget kitchen that is good quality. If the quality is going to hold up, I don't really care about the brand label or the wood type. I also want good quality hardware that won't break on me in the first 5 years. I am also not too thrilled that Costco does not offer frameless - but is that a big deal? Any advice on how to proceed? THANK YOU!...See Moreplease help - my head is spinning from various cabinet choices
Comments (8)Ikea price is hard to beat. I have a kitchen and bath store in the DC area moved it from Orlando (don't know how to change my name on here. I have not studied Ikea cabinets enough to understand why you would state the install on Ikea is so much higher. That does not make much sense to me. I have over 100 Ready To Assemble cabinets I offer to my local customers. The going rate for to assemble my cabinets is about $15-$18 each. Installation after assembly is pretty much the same. So be careful of the price difference you have there. All wood cabinets from costco are excellent quality. I personaly do not agree with the stigma that Ikea is superior beyone belief to other products out there. Who says they are the only company with frameless products that are any good! I have yet to meet some one who even knows what part of the world they are made in. Ikea offers a 25 year warranty. All wood thru costco is limited lifetime. If you find a independent dealer who sells them you should get a better price. We get them at 50% less than Costco does. Allwood pays for all merchandising and designs for costco. I can beat costco's price without breaking a sweat for example. Any dealer in your area with reasonable markups should do the same. 6 square cabinets is another product lines that ships in 2 weeks that is comperable in price to All wood with a limited life time warranty. Brandom Cabinets is a limited life time warranty semi custom cabinet company that allows choice of colors for approx 1.5 times the cost of Ikea. It seems strange to me that you are being pushed for a cabinet design by a contractor before you have decided what you are going to buy. That is a big red flag to me you are getting the cart before the horse. Be careful...See MorePlease stop my spinning head!
Comments (14)Personally, I prefer the peninsula versions b/c the peninsula directs traffic away from the range and Cooking Zone as well as the Prep Zone (counterspace b/w the range and sink). The peninsula versions also have the seats near the window as well and oriented so visitors can gaze outside if they like. In the island version, visitors have their backs to the window. Also withe the peninsula versions, you can cook and visit and, if you don't need water, you can also prep on the peninsula and visit. The peninsula will also be useful for large baking projects (if you have any) b/c of its proximity to the range (and pantry for ingredients). Visitors can also use the refrigerator & sink w/o getting into the Cooking Zone and w/o too great an impact to the Prep Zone. In the first two versions (w/corner sinks), you could use the 21" cabinet b/w the sink and DW as tray and/or cutting board storage. The cabinet is needed there to provide enough room for someone to stand at the sink and load the DW. Notice that I put the MW near the refrigerator as well...this is to allow snackers to use it but still keep it inside the kitchen. Right now, it's mounted on a shelf below the upper cabinet. If you'd rather, you could put a MW drawer in the peninsula...at the end of the peninsula opening toward the sink. This would keep it on the periphery so snackers will not get in the way of those working in the kitchen. I envision the counter next to the refrigerator to be a Snack Center...if you'd like to use it that way....See Morehvtech42
