Shoe about Michael Vick on Animal Planet tonight.

I don't know what time it's going to be on, but I do know it's tonight. Bob has a grip on the tv guide in his lap and he's asleep so I can't look at it right now.

He's the professional football player who had a dog fighting hobby on the side. A real nice guy (not)!

Question for Northeasterners-Pet Laws

Hoo Boy!!! quirkyquercus said" "Instead my problem is a lot of people are such chickenlivers, they feel they must have a guard dog. And a mean one. An they may maintain their dog to do that job much like a training some herding dogs to do that task. Only in suburbia, guard dogs are a liability." My two are guard dogs first, and family pets second. They can be both. With proper training. Oh, yeah---I also have guns, large knives, and some home made instruments most folks are shocked when they see them. I doubt the 'chickenliver' term applies to me. My dogs protect the house when we are gone---there is a rather high burglary/home damage crime rate at times in my area. I do not need them to guard when I am home----I am perfectly capable of that.(Wink) Now---about the original question. Seems to me many folks have it right---education and life styles. Hound dogs have always been kept in groups for hunting---a favorite sport in much of the western/southern US---so having 6-20 dogs around was quite common. If they were not your dogs, they were a neighbors. Hunting with dogs farther north was less popular---meaning fewer dogs per capita. Breeding/fighting animals has been going on for thousands of years. The Romans pitted men and beasts fighting for the viewing pleasure of the citizens. Customs are different in different countries---eating dogs is customary in some cultures. All these cultures have migrated to the US---bringing their customs with them. In many countries, killing weak/malformed pups is necessary/common---not enough food for all the litter. Many Americans pride themselves on taking the best care possible of their pets. Physically that is quite true. Behaviorally, it is very often miserable. There are many more neurotic dogs in the US than most other countries, IMHO. And, yes, I have been in other countries---Germany, England, and Scotland----to back up my opinion.

More gracious and kind words! Thank you everyone! Lucy will be a year old in October, and we got her at almost 8 weeks old. I didn't mean to imply that she's a bad girl so much now, 'cuz she's not for the most part. When she was teething, she chewed on our furniture and pulled up carpet when we were gone. It was old furniture that we'd planned to replace, but I know that's NOT the point! I think she's past all that, and I don't think what she's experiencing is seperation anxiety. She seems to do fine with short (1-2 hour) periods alone. It's the longer stretches where she starts to get into things. We confine her to the living room and dining room areas and she loves to check out what's on the table. We're pretty careful about clearing it off of anything she can chew up. But she seems to have a particular fascination with the pepper shaker - not the salt, just the pepper! We have to go looking for it at dinner time sometimes! Silly girl! I think it's been different with Lucy than our others because my husband was laid off work when we got her, so he was home all the time in the beginning. Then within about 3 weeks, he suddenly started going through some serious health issues that put him in and out of the hospital for the next 3 months, so I was completely stressed trying to run between hospital and home and work (thank goodness I'm self-employed and it was our slow time at work...) I was dealing with a new puppy by myself, and then dealing with my husband's pain issues when he was at home. I know dogs are very sensitive to our moods and stress levels, and of course because he wasn't here much, she bonded with me like glue. So I have this constant shadow at home (which is ok, mind you, because I love her to death...) even though my husband is home almost all the time now (as he hasn't gone back to work, yet...) Anyway, I'm sure that's all more information than you all wanted, but circumstances do come into play when it comes to how our kids (fur and regular) behave. Lucy is, for the most part, a pretty good girl these days. My biggest complaint right now is that she's all over me when I get home, mostly after along day (I work 12+ hours on Saturdays..), wanting to jump on me. (Let me interject here that she's not ALONE 12 hours - my husband is home...) I've tried all the usual stuff to get her to stop - turning my back on her (she just jumps on my back), ignoring her (she won't have ANY of that!!), leaning over her to get her to sit (which works sometimes, but other times she just slams into my face with her face as she starts to jump as I lean over!) - I'm thinking of gettting one of those no-jump harnasses, but I wonder if that will just keep her from jumping rather than training her NOT to jump. And it would depend on my husband putting it on her before I came home... Our other two shepherds had bad hips, so jumping wasn't a big problem. I have a feeling ol' Lucy has good hips... Sammy, I mostly hang out on the Hoya forum, and the Cactus and Succulent forum is my 2nd favorite. You must have the "knack" if you can grow roses! I've tried them and have never had any success, so outside, I grow pretty hardy stuff. Thanks again, everyone, and if you have suggestions about the jumping thing, I'm all ears! Denise in Omaha P.S. This is Lucy a couple months ago, posing with her stuffed kitty. I'm amazed at what her jaws can do to SOME stuff, but she has several stuffed animal toys that she's had since day one and though a little frazzled, they're still intact!

Favorite Gardening Shoes?

Muck Boots, I never thought I would like them. I received a pair of the shoe style for Christmas. Once I tried them I became a convert. I wear the every day when working outside. They are a little on the expensive side, but my feet are always comfortable and dry. I like that they are easy to slip on and off, yet they always stay in place when working.

Just yesterday I was thinking, with football soon starting, what is going to become of him....It seems things have quieted down, which is probably good for him...Maybe the show will get everyone all riled up again and the public will, again be ready to string him up....I just hope his old football team lets him go and doesn't bring back as a hero.....One bad dude!

From the previews I've seen I think it shows him being remorseful ( I have my doubts ), but it also shows some of the dogs being socialized.

I don't know if the show is more about him or about the animals that were abused.

Don't think he's remorseful, think he's sorry he got caught!

Taught for so long, I could sense those sincere or NOT!

That soulful look and say "I'm sorry", bah humbug!
Then giggle behind your back!

I think the show is basically about the dogs that were destined to be destroyed but through some determined people who rescued many of them they found happy homes.
I'm sorry, and I know I'll get flamed for this, but I would not trust any of those dogs "rehabilitated" or not.I plan to watch the show though.I love animal Planet!LOL

Isn't he in jail, or prison right now? I have no sympathy for him. He had everything going for him and threw it all away.
I feel sorry for the dogs...but especially for the poor beagles that were used to "bait" the dogs. Anyone who is cruel to animals can rot in hell for all I care. They said it was his "culture." My a##!!!!

I was thinking the same too Lilliepad. I could never truly trust a dog that had already been used for fighting. Especially around a child. Nope, to risky.

To think he got his giggles out of dogs bleeding to death. What a loser.

At least we'll never have to watch that jerk playing football ever again. His career is OVER.

I thought he was in jail too. Any apology from him is phony, in my opinion. I agree with whoever said he's just sorry he got caught. It's a sick thing to do to animals. I've read about the people who are rehabilitating those dogs and how many of them will still make fine pets. I would not trust one of those dogs an inch. Hope they don't go to any homes with small children.

I was thinking about this sorry excuse for a human, the other day and was wondering what happened to him. Is he in jail/prison? For how long? What ever time he got, its not enough. As for the rescued dogs, I'm fraid I would not trust them, rehailitated or not. Sad. Dottie

The show will be on tonight at 10 pm EST. It is called "Animal Witness." Apparently 60 minutes will be airing more on the 27th.

It sounds like it is a series????
This program, the first series, which is tonights show will air all week at lots of different times. Check the guides.
Mike Vick is in prison. His career with Atlanta Falcons is over and kaput. I thought there were rumors of oh heck which football team is known for being "bad boys?" might play him...Oakland Raiders thats who it was. But he still has to get out of prison before that happens.
He was an idiot in my book! He had it all, looks, talent, plenty of money, great career, threw it out the window. Stupid stupid stupid. He will never get over this.
I cringe when I think about the dogs and man I was upset when it all came out.
Our family has followed the Atlanta Falcons for25 years and cheered thru good and bad but this was the worst for them and they didn't have a thing to do with it. Except as employer. Last I'd heard they were sueing Vick for some of the money back they had paid him.

I watched it last night and I thought it was a very good show. Vick was sentenced to 23 months in Federal Prison. He is bankrupt and the state can still press charges against him. He had to pay money to help house and rehabilitate his dogs. The show didn't cut him any slack except to say it is thought he was raised around dog fighting as a kid.

Out of 66 dogs rescued 55 were pit bull terriers. They only had to put down 2 of the dogs. Only one because he was too vicious and one female that was too sick.

A pit bull rescue group called Bad Rap took the others and many of them were driven to the west coast and all of them have been placed with loving families. One is a gentle therapy dog that visits hospitals. He is so big and so sweet and gentle.

The rescuers were shocked that the dogs were so docile and actually scared of them at first because of no socialization. The dogs are very anxious to please and fight because of the encouragement of the dog fighters encouraging them and saying good dog when they are aggressive. It was a really interesting show.

The dog on the Little Rascals show, Petey, was a pit bull and Helen Keller's dog was a pit bull. There were a lot of other interesting stories about them rescuing people.

There were short shots of videos of dog fighting but I would recommend watching the show when it comes on again.
