Anything Cooking At Your House?

I have a pork roast browned with potatoes in the crock pot for supper time. I made some potato salad and gave a lot to Cheryl and I also made some apple salad. The roast smells so good cooking with onions and peppers. I will make some gravy from the broth. I will put some biscuits in the oven too this evening. Are you cooking anything today?

No one home but me today. Too hot to cook so I think I may just have a sandwich later. DH took a sandwich with him for dinner at work.

I put some chicken in the crock pot with a marinade sauce. Baking granola in the oven right now(with pecans!).

Thank you, thank you, thank you -------- everyone! I was just trying to add a little more fun to a few everyday dishes. Let's start with the strawberries. As I said, inspired by Ann, but with a little modification on my part. I used half cream cheese and half whipped cream because I like cream with strawberries better. I did not use vanilla, I am not sure vanilla is compatible with strawberries. The sprinkle is dark chocolate. I think chocolate should not compete with the strawberries and should act as a "seasoning" instead. The wild rice was steamed in Zongzi Grass leaves. Zongzi Grass leaves, not bamboo leaves as they are called by some, have been used to steam rice in the Far East for centuries. They impart a very nice flavor to rice. The ravioli: Well made ravioli should have very thin skin; however, I like pasta, so how do you make ravioli with more pasta? If I make ravioli with wide fringes, that would make them look kind of clumsy. So I came up with this idea as well home-made myself a cutter that would give me thin skinned ravioli and more pasta to go with the sauce. It also kind of makes the ravioli intriguing looking. dcarch

Gardening came first. I started gardening at 4 with my maternal aunt & uncle. My first experience was helping Uncle Mark graft a grapefruit tree to a lemon tree. The tree is still growing & producing lemons on one side & grapefruit on the other. I love that tree. I taught DH how to love gardening. He had fiddled around in his parent's garden as a kid but never really thought of it as anything except work. I had to teach him that it could be a great hobby. Now, he loves it every bit as much as I. In retirement, we have lots of gardening plans. Here, we grow mostly ornamentals in the English garden style which means we interplant herbs & veggies with the shrubs & perennials. I didn't start cooking until I was on my own. It was either cook or starve since I couldn't afford to eat 3 meals/day in restaurants. Learning to love cooking was more arduous than learning to love gardening. I became a good cook when we started keeping a one-year food pantry. Didn't have much choice. Learning to love cooking came in my 30s when we started doing a lot of corporate entertaining. I love to entertain dragging out all the china, sterling, crystal, etc. Had to have food to serve...so cooking became important. :) I still enjoy cooking for others more than myself. I'm quite content with a carton of yogurt & a piece of fruit for dinner most evenings. We are doing lots more cooking now that DH is retired. I've been teaching him to cook & he's enjoying the process & seems to be a natural in the kitchen. We're having fun together preparing meals while talking about what we want to do in the garden. /tricia

Lou - LOL! I hate any store bought cookie - even the "gourmet" ones. They are all too greasy or oily or dry as dust. Thank you everyone for your comments! My Kitchenaid makes cookies and cakes sooooo easy! I pre-measure everything and put it on paper plates and just dump each plate when the recipe tells me to. If I don't pre-measure, you can bet I will leave something out. Here are my favorite 2 recipes that everyone goes nuts (pun intended) for. Cookies: Oat-rageous Cookies 1/2 C shortening 1/2 C sugar 1/2 C brown sugar 1 egg 1 Tbsp water 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 C all purpose flour 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1 C quick cooking oats 1 C semisweet chocolate chips 3/4 C cranberries 1/2 C chopped walnuts 1/2 C English toffee bits In a mixing bowl, cream shortening and sugars. Beat in egg, water and vanilla. Combine flour, baking soda and salt. Gradually add to the creamed mixture. Stir in remaining ingredients. *Drop by rounded Tbsp 2" apart onto ungreased baking sheets. **Bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. *I use a cookie scoop and get 32-36 cookies per batch. **I prefer to bake them at 365 for 15 minutes. ***I leave out the chocolate chips. Bundt Cake: Ingredients Ã¯Â¿Â½ 1 (18.25 ounce) package devil's food cake mix Ã¯Â¿Â½ 1 (5.9 ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix Ã¯Â¿Â½ 1 cup sour cream Ã¯Â¿Â½ 1 cup vegetable oil Ã¯Â¿Â½ 4 eggs Ã¯Â¿Â½ 1/2 cup warm water Ã¯Â¿Â½ 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 2. In a large bowl, mix together the cake and pudding mixes, sour cream, oil, beaten eggs and water. Stir in the chocolate chips and pour batter into a well greased 12 cup bundt pan. 3. Bake for 50 to 55 minutes, or until top is springy to the touch and a wooden toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool cake thoroughly in pan at least an hour and a half before inverting onto a plate If desired, dust the cake with powdered sugar. * I add 1 cup of Angel Flake shredded coconut

Love the house! I'm probably new to you all here, I do post now and then but I was more active on the kitchen forum for a while, and sometimes the garden forum. My house, if any of you sort of know, is a 1915 Craftsman with some Victorian elements (I suspect the original owner had this built to their very specific specs). I had a historian take a look at photos and even they were a bit puzzled at all of the different types of Craftsman homes it draws on. Having said that, we're always in the middle of doing "something" here. Over the summer, I had my landscaping professional done, including a paver patio put in; some continuing electrical upgrades (like, we needed outdoor receptacles on the house and garage), emergency gutter repairs, etc. Right now I'm at kind of a standstill because I'm waiting on contractors to fit me into their schedules. I'm having my chimney/fireplace repaired to the tune of $6000 (it needs to be brought up to Code and the firebox has some damage needing repair). But scheduling them this time of year has been difficult to say the least. I had an attempted burglary and they compromised my sliding door in the kitchen so I'm waiting on the new one to come in which will mean taking down some masonry and the stairs to re-install. Also waiting on several new windows for the basement since one of the fell in on it's own accord (they were ancient). I had schedule the house and garage to be painted but this can't start yet - because of the masonry at the sliding door having to be repaired (I'm already 1 month behind on that and concerned now it might get too cold to do it). All of the gutters were about to be replaced BUT when they came, they discovered the fascia boards were rotted - so now I'm waiting on a price to add new boards also (I saw the condition of them - yikes, don't know how the gutters were even being held on!). I have regrading to be done on one side of the house, and installation of underground piping from the gutters to the street. That contractor left for Italy right as I made the decision to do the work. Expected back I think this week. And, I need 5 new doors. Front door, 2 sides (one is in my living room to the original car port which is now a covered patio), the garage door (not the pull-ups, we had those done already) and last is the door leading from a bedroom to the upstairs balcony. I have no idea what this is going to run me yet *terrified* I've picked what I want for the most part, but still have some questions for the contractor and am waiting on him to stop by to discuss. I really wanted all of this done by the first week of November. I have a TCO on the house and I've renewed it twice already. I think all of this work would have cleared it out but it's clear that I'm going to have to renew for another 6 months. Oh well. I'm sure the Town will be happy to have another $25. On a good note I finally bought a small flat screen TV for the kitchen. I got tired of running back and forth to the Living Room while cooking to see what was happening on my favorite shows :D

Just tomatoes!!!!

I have chicken pieces marinating in olive oil, garlic, prunes, garlic and capers. I'll pop it in the oven for dinner. With boiled new potatoes and broccoli I guess.

I got 15 pounds of tomatoes from my vines yesterday, plus some peppers and lots of basil, so just made sauce. Took forever, but YUM!

Boneless chicken breasts sauteed in olive oil, sprinkled at the end with chopped fresh basil, chopped fresh garlic, and lemon juice. Really good!

I'll bet all your houses smell divine. I miss those tomato days!

Nope, I've been a slug all day. I was going to make ivamae's blueberry muffins and nanacherie's fig tart today, but I just don't feel much like baking. I'm making a pot of chili for dinner because it'll get me out of the kitchen fast.

Pork tenderloin, potato salad, sliced cukes and tomatoes, and I made Glenda's Okra Casserole for the first time. It is delicious!! I have enough okra to feed a small nation and we're tired of fried okra (don't need much of that). Oh, and we're having Peach Dump Cake and iced tea, also.

I just took a "Old Fashion Peanut Butter pie" out of the oven, it smells wonderful!

Waaaaaa...I wanta eat at your-alls house. I just came home from the market. It is just too hot and humid to do much cooking. If I could still grill outdoors, that would be what I'd do. I bought a small container op p.salad and I'll fry up a couple brats and heat up some beans.

No cooking today for me. Larry is still gone. I will have to get back in the groove tomorrow he'll be home.. Kinda nice not having to cook for a few days here and there..

Six dozen chocolate chip cookies and two dozen black bottom cupcakes this afternoon. We're going to Door County, WI tomorrow, up over the Mackinaw Bridge, thru the Upper Penninsula and down to Door County, about a 9 hour drive. Have 2 grands there and our DD and FSIL (only). They will be looking for some when we get there. Can't wait to get there!

A loaf of Glenda's Sour Cream Banana bread with walnuts added, chicken thighs with a lemon thyme sauce, sweet cabbage pierogies and home grown corn off the cob, YUM.

Matti5 pull up a chair and join us. We had four others for supper too. Cheryl brought her homemade apple dumplings and they were served with either milk or vanilla ice cream. I didn't do any baking this weekend. I am all finished and hope to watch Big Brother tonight.

I smashed 4 fingers (2 of them feel better today), last night so DH cooked a pasta meal for DS's g/f' b/d dinner. I had a pie in the freezer from last week, so DH baked it. He also did all the dishes.

I baked some cinnamon bread earlier today. Not from scratch though, it sure is yummy even so. :)

For dinner all I made was fried pork chops and scrambled eggs. I was going bake the pork chops with the mushroom gravy and make potatoes but then DH said he wanted them fried with eggs.

I put 2 london broil steaks in the crock pot about 4 this morning with onion,garlic,salt and pepper.We just had burritos with some of the shredded meat.I plan to make BBQ sauce for sandwiches tomorrow.Burritos were delish!

I've been in a cooking mood lately. Been watching too many cooking tv programs. Chad was home tonight so I browned some hamburger and added it to macaroni and cheese. Also had a green salad.
I topped it off with 2 store bought peanut butter cookies.
