I Can Cook Anything Thanks to Andi2006!

I think I'm gonna pass out from excitement. I received a surcie a few hours ago. Then the doorbell rang and there was a big box on my step. It was from Andi2006!

Here's what I found:

And inside were three beautifully wrapped boxes and two glossy home design magazines. I love magazines!

Andi didn't pick just one cooking method, she picked 'em all with Bittman's book! Andi, you don't know how many times I've actually thought about buying this because I thought it would be perfect for me. But as strange as it sounds, I'm not very good at buying things for myself. You couldn't have chosen better.

Knowing from her research that DH and I love tapas, Andi found these beautiful plates that are perfect in our kitchen. She even knew that I don't care for olives, except in motif ;) These plates are heavy, too - I know they'll last forever.

And here's a treat that I'd never seen - Spanish Pisto, lots of veggies with a hint of cumin, which she knows I enjoy. We loves dips of all kinds, so this is sure to be a hit. I think the packaging is lovely too.

And here's the whole enchilada!

Andi, you did a fabulous job picking items that I love. And the wrapping - and note on color-coordinated stationary - were fab!

Er my box went out today and nadda is wrapped. By the time I find a %*@Q#&$ box, bubble wrap everything, and try to cram it in to said box, I'm DONE.

My name is Jessica and I can't gift wrap worth a #&$&$#. So my hats off to those who do!

Oh, the swap box (excuse my rant) - beautiful plates, and that book is a classic! Tell us how you like the pisto - I've never heard of it! Hmmmm time to hit that Spanish store near me again, I wonder if they carry some.

Fedco has mizuna at a very reasonable price, and if you order at least $30 worth seeds (which wasn't at all difficult for me when I saw the variety they have), shipping is free. I ordered a lot of vegetable seeds, but they have a lot of flower seeds, too, although I don't think they're the special ones some people are looking for. Can I do anything with 'green' butternut?

In years past, we've taken green/immature butternut, as well as other hard winter squash, and sliced it up and fried it in olive oil, it was quite good. But something changes quickly - this works if it's picked, peeled and fried, but not so much if its picked, left to set around a few days, then cooked. We don't care that much for summer squash, but my daughter loves her ratatouille and we do a dish with immature green winter squash every summer. Just last week we did this with a small Guatemalan Blue.

Tea Brack recipe first, then how to make homemade buttermilk. -Grainlady TEA BRACK (source: Irresistible Irish Breads - magazine article by Deborah Krasner) Brack, an Irish word for bread, is often used when referring to fruited mixtures. Tea Brack is a traditional tea bread which is an easy version of barm brack. Makes 1 loaf. 2 c. dark seedless raisins or dried currants (I use currants) 1-1/2 c. firmly packed dark-brown sugar 1-1/2 c. strong brewed tea, chilled 1/4 c. rum (I use 1/8 c.) 2 c. unsifted all-purpose flour 1-1/2 t. baking powder 1/2 t. ground cinnamon 1/2 t. ground nutmeg 1/2 t. salt 1 large egg, at room temperature, lightly beaten 1. Several hours or the night before baking, in large glass bowl, combine raisins/currants, brown sugar, tea, and rum. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and let sit overnight. 2. Heat oven to 325°F. Grease an 8-1/2x4-1/2-inch loaf pan and line with waxed paper. Grease waxed paper. 3. In medium-size bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Slowly beat flour mixture and the egg into raisin mixture just until combined to form a batter. 4. Pour batter into greased loaf pan. Bake brack 1-1/2-hours until browned and cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack 5-minutes. Turn brack out of pan and remove waxed paper. Cool brack completely on wire rack. Grainlady note: I use two 7-1/2x3-1/2-inch loaf pans or three 5-3/4x3-3/4-inch loaf pans and reduce the baking time accordingly. This is a very moist bread - more currants than bread, almost. I like the smaller pans so I can cut the bread into thin slices that don't fall apart. If you make it in a regular loaf pan, the slices tend to split and fall apart. -------------------------- I use a large amount of buttermilk when it comes to baking on St. Patrick's Day, so I make a homemade version of it using information from "Natural Meals In Minutes" by Rita Bingham. I use a non-instant powdered milk, but regular commercial milk works VERY well. Homemade Buttermilk To a 1-quart canning jar add 1/2 c. buttermilk and fill the jar with regular milk OR reconstituted powdered milk. Note: You can use commercial buttermilk as the starter, or a reconstituted liquid made from powdered buttermilk, or buttermilk from a former batch of homemade buttermilk - your choice. Stir well and cover (I use a plastic lid designed to use with canning jars). Let stand in a warm place (at least 80°F) until clabbered, about 12-18-hours. Stir until smooth. Refrigerate. Grainlady note: I keep mine in my oven with the light on. The temperature at the opposite side of the oven from the light is about 80°F. You can use homemade buttermilk from a previous to culture the milk for the next batch. Just make sure you use it within 2-weeks. Older buttermilk doesn't work as well as newer buttermilk. If you've ever used reconstituted powdered buttermilk, it's rather insipid, thin, and tasteless compared to commercial buttermilk. The homemade buttermilk is more like commercial buttermilk.

I get yogurt that comes in a 6 pack (from the milkman). DH usually eats the vanilla & I eat the strawberry & raspberry. He's gone to Korea for a while and I discovered vanilla yogurt just isn't my favorite flavor, BUT take 4 8oz cups of it, mix 1 cup of milk and freeze it in the Cuisinart, top it with some warm strawberry sauce and it's like a whole 'nuther food! Don't bother with the chocolate (yogurt) recipe in the book though, it wasn't good. I bought mine on Craigslist (the lady bought it on sale at Macy's but had never taken it out of the box so she sold it for $25). That one goes on my "good purchases" list for sure.

I've also never heard of Pisto but it looks amazingly good.

What a great package, Sue! I love the bright colours of your plates, set off nicely by the olives. And I've got (and love) that Bittman book, and I'm sure you'll find yourself referring to it often. And I'm curious about pisto too, and would love to hear your comments.

wonderful package. i love bittman and his shows, although he seemed to not have been renewed on pbs. i've never had pisto, but i guess it's like the equivilent of italian caponata? i bet you it's mighty tasty.

This recipe looked like a simple & great (get it?) use for your pisto:

For Omelets:
12 eggs
Pinch of salt
Pinch of freshly ground pepper
6 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 1/4 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
Pisto sauce

In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, salt and pepper until well blended. In an 8-inch nonstick frying pan or omelet pan over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of the butter. When the foam subsides, add one-sixth of the beaten eggs and immediately stir the center with the flat side of a fork. Then, with the tines of the fork, lift the edges of the omelet and tilt the pan so that any uncooked egg runs underneath the cooked portion. Vigorously slide the pan back and forth over the burner until the omelet moves freely.

When the omelet is lightly cooked but still creamy in the center, mound one-sixth of the cheese over half of the omelet. Using a spatula, lift and fold the uncovered half over the filling. Slide the omelet onto a warmed individual plate and spoon some of the sauce over the top. Cover lightly with aluminum foil and keep warm while you cook the remaining omelets.

Serve the omelets piping hot.

I would love to check out that cookbook, Mique turned me onto Bittman last year when she posted the Steak Diane recipe. Cool plates and I like the sound of that dip. Way to go Andi!

Those of you who do such a nice job of wrapping your packages...I'm envious. I'm so bad at that.
