That's what I did because I don't want FB accessing anything personal about me. I use an Email specifically set up for FB and Twitter. There's no address book associated with that Email and there are no personal details in the profile. The only difficulty is that you have to tell anyone that you wish to "friend" that you are using that FB ID.

sure just use whatever email account,then go in to your privacy settings and set what you want for ppl to view your posts,or see your photos..simple really

You may want to make sure you aren't breaking any "rules" though.

I can't recall but facebook may ask that you use your real name, etc. I know you "can" set up an account with a fake name, but I'm not sure you should if it's against their rules. I'm in the camp if you can't or don't want to follow the rules, then don't join.

You also may consider that I think there may be some laws about misrepresenting yourself on the internet...so just be careful. I doubt anything would happen, but again, if you want the advantages of being on facebook, you should be sure to play by their rules.

I see no problem using a separate email account and your real legal name though.

Someone posted on the 'what happened to marilyn c' thread that her dog has a facebook page. As for misrepresenting myself on the internet isn't that what most of us here are doing in a way - we might register with iVillage but our names here can be anything. I will make sure to read Facebook's policy first. I think the important part of this is to keep a separate email account for social media.

Maire-that info,the "real" name business,would be in the privacy section-nothing for you to worry about there..use whatever you want for an email account,and a name...a good lot of ppl on that particular site never go by their own names.

maire cate, the difference is..here you are not required to use your real name and people know people use names and nicknames that are not their legal names.... but on facebook, if you are required to use your real name and you don't, you are in fact misrepresenting yourself.

But one of my family members has used a totally fake name on FB for a couple of years, and my nephew's dog has a FB page, so I'm not sure that anybody really checks. LOL

I made up one a couple years ago just to see a friend's pics from her trip to Holland. I don't use FB and it doesn't turn my crank anyway. I used one of my cats names with my last name.

I had no idea they went through my email address book.
So, when someone's picture shows up as a potential friend that is how it came together? The "friend" in my address book probably had nothing to do with it. I thought it was because they came looking for my page.
Can you tell when someone has viewed or tried to view your page?

If you get a friend "request," it's from someone who wants to be your friend.

If you get a friend "suggestion" from FB, it's because the person being suggested is friends with one of your other friends, and FB thinks you might want to include them in your friends list as well. It's to help connect you with others.

On your Profile Page at the top right side, if you click on "Find Friends," you can manage how FB makes friend suggestions.

You'll see where it says:
Choose how you communicate with friends. "See how it works" or "manage imported contacts."

Click on the two phrases that are in quotation marks, and you can make your choices there.

I learn something new every day.

I know quite a few people who don't use their real names on FB. I even know a beagle who has his own membership! :-)

I don't think FB automatically accesses your email contacts to request friends for you. They like to do this, but you have to give permission. Perhaps you did so without realizing it?

If you join FB, you'll be able to see my dad's photographs there--I post one every morning. See? Isn't that an incentive? LOL

Oh Susan - that's just what I need - another reason to spend more time sitting at the computer. LOL. I think you're right and I didn't have all my privacy settings set properly.

Just seeing Susan's pictures alone makes FB worth joining. Her Dad was a wonderful photographer.

Do what I did, register under a fake name but tell your friends and family who you are and make a fake birthday etc. I used my real first name so they'd know it's me and, even then, my daughter (who knew I was going to do this) asks me if I know Sheila ______ who is asking to be her friend. hahahaha when I reminded her she roared. I get no requests now. The upshot of doing this was I got 23 happy birthday posts on April 1st which is not my birthday. I thought they'd catch my joke with that date. NOT.
