Parental approval or.....

I had a discussion with some ladies yesterday about what we did or did not approve of our kids activities when they were young. I told them our daughter came to me and wanted me to know that she went to the Dr, and got a prescription for birth control. Now, she had graduated from high school and was about 19 yrs old. She did still live at home but worked full time. I told her that I thought it was responsible for her to get protection if she was going to be sexually active. These women were aghast that I would approve. Another thing that happened when our oldest son was in high school, I knew he had taken up smoking. He often said he had to go out to the barn to look for something, when he wanted to sneak a puff. My sis-in-law, who had girls the same age, said her girls smoked, and why fight it, so she let them smoke in the house. I said if DS wanted to smoke, he would have to continue to take the trouble to sneak it because I didn't approve. The women I was talking to said I had a double standard for the girl & boys. I said I didn't see a correlation between the two subjects, sex & smoking.

What do you all think? and how did you handle situations like this with your kids?
