I don't think Facebook automatically checks your email contact list. They ask if you want them to do that, but you have to okay it. (I didn't.) They do suggest friends all the time. Most of them I ignore because I never heard of them. I think these are people who are friends with my friends. I don't know how they came up with those four for you.

Usually the suggestions come from other people you know. How do you visit anyone if you don't ask them to be your friend? Very few people have their names open to all of the public.

Once you indicate someone is a friend, I've noticed that FB will grab THEIR friends and see if I want to make them all MY friends too. I always say NO. I've done the same thing as you, and only share my information with Friends.

I don't do too much in FB.

Oh I forgot to add that I didn't sign up under my married name. I signed up under my maiden name because I just wasn't sure how Facebook operated and I didn't want my name to automatically show up as someone else's friend until I figured this all out. So the only way those 4 friends and one business could have been "suggested" by Facebook is if they pulled them from my e mail address book. Only 1 of the 4 would even have known my maiden name and certainly wouldn't have used it, 1 is a KT member that I've emailed 3 times in the past year, and the others are neighbors and a business who don't know my maiden name.

I haven't asked anyone to be my friend nor did I ask Facebook to check my address book to see if anyone there is a member. The only thing in common is that those 'suggested' friends have my email address. The only way FB could have suggested them is by checking my email address.

I guess I'm just not FaceBook material. LOL

If you don't want anyone to find you on Facebook, go to "settings", then choose Privacy. There are many options which you can choose. You can change the settings so no one can find you if that's what you desire, although that would be defeating the purpose of being on Facebook.

I won't use facebook or any of those sites. Stay away from "my space" & especially "fanbox" Way too much junk.

That's odd. The thing I like best about Facebook is the news feed, including photos......seeing what my friends and relatives are up to on a daily basis. Without Facebook, I might not know that my-daughter-who-never-tells-me-anything is a mountain biker. :-)

The Facebook quizzes and games, etc., don't appeal to me, so I have them blocked.

Oh, and it's a fun way to communicate with my DGD (who has 760 Facebook friends.......).

I love Facebook. I have reconnected to some cousins and other people from my past. That's the whole point. If you don't want to be friends with anyone on Facebook it defeats the whole purpose.

Facebook does use e-mail addresses. Even if you did not give FB permission to use your address book, you gave them your e-mail address and others who may have have your e-mail address may have given FB access to their address book (you might need to read that a few times!).

The best way to avoid that is to use a throw-down e-mail address, but like lindyluwho said, the whole point of FB is connecting with people.

As you can tell I'm a real novice at online networking. I am interested in reconnecting with old friends, former class mates and relatives. I think the reason why I've been so slow to get involved is for fear that I might find myself spending even more time on the computer than I am now.

i've been very lucky and connected with relatives, and all my kids...just a few chosen outsiders i've known for at least 5 yars or better...having fun on farm town...

Susanjf - I've read how much fun you've had on farm town, staying up until the wee hours of the morning checking on your crops. I don't need another thing that will mess with my sleeping issues. LOL But it is intriguing.

I don't think I will ever learn how to use FB my niece asked me to join so I did. Then another niece found me, then a friend, etc. But if I send them a message, they don't respond. Think they are trying to tell me something? JK, but what is the point?

My profile is completely open and I'll add anybody as a friend.
I have people as friends that I have no idea who they are.
I play Farm Town, FarmVille, MyFarm, (Lil)Farm Life, and Animal Ranch.
Farm Town is the best one. These farming games are addictive.

mcmann, fb definitely does peruse your email contacts, I have no clue how;
I was astounded at their suggestions of friends, a few of them were people who had emailed me a year ago only once for business, and there is no way they would have sought me out as a friend on facebook.

My facebook settings are on private and that works very well.

mcmann, with my crazy sleeping schedule it's a good place to go right now. but for me, it has been the relative contact that has been very important...and it's a quick "fix" contact with most of my kids...most are on the puter for business and i hate adding one more email to their "work load"...now we save that for very personal or mundane things like soccer game times, lol...

I, like you, signed up under my maiden name -- when I 'poke' I indicate more identifying information... and I use a 'non' home email address, along with 'only shares with friends' indication.
