Curiosity didn't kill a cat this time....

Nope. Curiosity made a perfect landing on Mars and didn't harm a single cat in the process. We stayed up to watch the live streaming videos from NASA's JPL. Got to see the first two pictures sent back. Really cool to watch.

It is so cool! I wish had been more aware that this was happening instead of watching the gawdawful coverage of the Olympics. Not the athletes or the events, just NBC's coverage of them..

I think this is an amazing feat by NASA. Send them a gold medal. Nevertheless, I sometimes wonder if all those billions of dollars might be better used here on Earth.

I wasn't feeling well and had a sore back, so I was up too. Since it was getting close to the landing, I tuned into the NASA channel off and on until midnight and from then on watched right up until the landing and the first pics came through.

Gerd, poor Schefflera!! George has been through so much. Potting and re-potting, pee'd on, boxed in then relocated. Flushing the soil may not be enough, but to re-pot again is a lot of work for you, and stressful for your plant. However, re-potting may be Georges only hope. Does soil smell like ammonia? If it was my plant, here's what I'd do. Re-pot in fresh, well-draining-fertile soil. Wash container, in and out. If cats smell pee, they may feel the pot is their second litter box. After soil is firmly packed, it'd get a hearty drink. I'd then sprinkle Cayenne Pepper around the edge of pot.. A smart cat smells pepper before approaching..he/she/they will make a u-turn. When the cardboard method is done, a sturdy piece of cardboard must lay flat on the pot. I used a large, flat piece, cut a circle for trunk, then placed on top of pot..this way, no part of soil was present. Your kitty-cats must love your Scheff..lol. Feisty little guys/gals. I know. I'm about to figure out how to tackle the digging issue. We also don't want him to ever try to dig under the fence, so it's kind of a safety issue. Maybe bitter apple spray will help. I'm going to get some because when I said I had him trained off the pot ghetto... well I was wrong. Have chased him around the yard to retrieve several new broms lately, the ones I potted up to get them to root well, and wait out his terror stage, because he was pulling them up out of the yard because they weren't well-rooted and easy to grab. And thorns? He doesn't care. I've got broms that rip me to shreds, but only after I've managed to catch him and pry them out of his mouth. What he doesn't seem to like is tomato cages, steers clear of them... so I'm thinking about buying a couple more to shield new plants, just moving them around the yard as I put things in to let them get rooted. For a couple bucks, that might be a solution to a lot of things for me. That said, the much more attractive bamboo teepees have suffered recently. He doesn't steer clear of them. Ugh.

Thank you for this. I would also like to add that visiting a nest repeatedly may attract other predators either interested in checking out your behavior, like crows , bluejays and blackbirds, or mammal predators who follow a scent trail. Leave nests alone, please. Best for the birds to do so!

I can’t post pictures lately. I just now took a picture of mine and tried to send it along with a few sentences. When I hit “post” it tries for a minute and then I get this “Oops, something went wrong” message like I always get lately. Since a picture is worth a thousand words but I can’t post one, I’ll try to tell you in less than a thousand words how mine grows… It’s about four feet tall, around two feet wide and very nice and healthy, full of buds. It’s a gorgeous rose with a unique color.

Dedtired, I couldn't agree more. Especially with the state of the economy the BILLIONS of dollars used to go to Mars is a huge waste of money. I've never been of fan of space exploration. Just because we can go there doesn't mean we should. That money could go a long way toward education, the homeless, the hungry, etc.

Yes, it is a lot of money, BUT, over the years the space programs have given many advances to the medical world that we might never had or as soon as we have had them. Just my thoughts. The other thought, is even if we had that money to spend, would the people spend it wisely. That is one reason donations are down.
