My upcoming neck surgery

For some people here, I'm a new name but many others know I've been a member at the KT since day one.

I kind of dropped out of sight the last few months. The reasons are many; new job, health issues, new hobby and Facebook to name a few.

I'm here right now because of my health issues and want to run some stuff by the members of the KT, old and new. Please know, I have good doctors and am not seeking medical advice. I am just curious if anyone here has ever had the procedure I about to undergo. Even though my doctor (a third-opinion dr) comes highly recommended and the surgery will be done at a top notch hospital, the procedure is risky because it involves the spine and I'm quite nervous.

Long story short, my neck has collapsed from degenerative arthritis and perhaps genetics causing stenosis, pain and numbness. This was determined through x-rays, CT scans and MRI with and without contrast. As such, I will be undergoing a Corpectomy and fusion. I've been on pain meds so long that my kidneys are damaged and surgery is now my only option.

The neck has seven bones. The bottom two in my neck are so compressed they are solidly fused. This is where the corpectomy is done. The two fused vertebrae are cut up in pieces and removed. A spacer is then inserted into the space and held in place with a plate and screws. The next three vertebrae will be realigned and fused after the disks between each are removed and filled with donor bone. The top two vertebrae are in good shape but there is a suspicious spot between them that the scans cannot ID. That will be biopsied during surgery.

So, that's my basic problem but there have been a couple other issues that I've been dealing with that may or may not be a result of my neck problems. I've had a cough and breathing difficulties for the last 14 month. I've seen four doctor/specialists about it and have been on several courses of steroids, antibiotics and other meds. Have had numerous tests done including a TB test and nothing is found to be wrong. After some research I discovered other people with cervical (neck) stenosis and breathing issues but none of my doctors have ever heard of this.

My questions...
1. Has anyone here ever had a corpectomy? I've talked to lots of people who have undergone fusion but not a complete removal of two vertebrae.

2. Anyone had a chronic cough and breathing problems there were caused by compression of the neck?

I have other questions but I'll just start with these two.

My surgery is scheduled for August 21st.
