Ever think you wanted to be a writer?

From the website, I Write Like: Check which famous writer you write like with this statistical analysis tool, which analyzes your word choice and writing style and compares them with those of the famous writers.

I did a copy/paste of several paragraphs, cleaned up some of the short cuts/abbreviations/etc. I write like David Foster Wallace. Ever heard of, or read him? I haven't a clue, but I think I'll check him out @ Amazon or library & see if I agree.

Well I guess we write alike because that's who came up for me too. Now isn't that strange? I'm going to try a few other things that I've written and see what happens.

This time I copied and pasted a couple different replies I wrote on the decor forum here at the Garden Web. The first said I wrote like James Joyce and the second was Charles Dickens! Now don't I feel smug?

My BD is Friday, so I'm more aware than usual of how long I've been around... In the half century (plus) that I've observed trends, chrome has risen and fallen in popularity but has remained a constant - much like white porcelain bath fixtures and appliances. While chrome might not always be at the height of fashion, it's a classic. I chose chrome for the 3 bathrooms in my new home, and also went with a chrome faucet set for my kitchen even though I have satin nickel bin pulls, knobs and light fixtures there. I think chrome adds a clean looking sparkle, and is easy to maintain and match. It's also one of the more economical choices to go with for a finish - a major consideration at the time when we were outfitting an entire home. Just make sure it's real chrome. I had "chrome-looking" light fixtures and towel bars that the builder installed in my previous home that were not. They etched, pitted and the finished flaked in no time.

Ah yes, it can be vicious, second guessing every decision. Budget, budget, budget, but wait, I can afford that if I don't do this, if I scrimp a little here I can splurge a little there. The perfect counter top finally, but wait, I saw something on GW.......... I know I want that oven but I just read that someone doesn't like it, argh!! Which sink, what back splash, now faucets......a hood, your kidding right?! Someone said we should do this, someone else said they would never do that. I just saw the latest connected fridge but it won't be out til next year, do I wait?? Is it worth it?? We all want the best we can get but what is that? Part of my problem was I knew what I wanted in my kitchen, been cooking 30 years so had a good idea as to how it should work for me. Then.....I found GW, oy, now I know nothing. Fortunately that was almost 2 years ago, being new construction we couldn't afford to be paralyzed by indecision but on the other hand it was a completely custom build so we could do whatever we wanted. I think my kitchen went from an initial budget of around $25k to about $65k. Appliances went from ~ $6k to over $30k. 2 sinks, faucets and drains were nearly $4k (copper), originally I think I was looking at spending about a grand. I must say the pride I take in my kitchen is worth it, the comments from friends and relatives who use it puts a huge smile on my face. My cooking has improved a number of notches. To me it's just an uber functional kitchen filled with some very nice appliances and finished cleanly with my aesthetic. But just from those facts it's a very beautiful space worthy of a photo shoot (according to many with whom I've shared it). So basically what I'm saying is "Get the h*ll off GW, Houzz, etc. if you don't want to make yourself crazy" :)

Lukki, my DIL's kitchen is the same. She's not a cook but will bake brownies or banana bread once in a while. It makes me crazy to try to cook something for my grandson when I'm babysitting. It's a large, square kitchen with good counter space and storage, but there is no island, so it's like 9 or 10 ft from one side of the kitchen to the other. The work triangle is HUGE, lol. There are 2 lazy susan corner cabinets, kitty corner from each other. The one closest to the stove, where there is a microwave on the counter and a tiny bit of counter space, holds all the baking ingredients and some misc pieces. Kitty corner, on the side where the sink is, where there is one full counter run with nothing but the stand mixer on it, has all the pots and pans. OMG. Totally backwards from the most efficient arrangement. I do all I can to avoid having to cook there. Funny thing is, she'd be totally fine with me suggesting a different arrangement, but I don't want her to feel self conscious or bad that I noticed that.

That's interesting. I posted a sample and it responded that I write like David Wallace, and when I scrolled to the bottom the results page, there were icons of several books for sale by David Wallace. A sidebar also appeared for a subscription to a writer's course and news sheet.

Ho boy! This is one sneaky advertisement.

Well it says I write like Raymond Chandler, I think I've heard of him but haven't a clue who he is. I'm a big reader, too. I'll look him up, maybe I should have before I responded! LOL

With my first sample, I got Kurt Vonnegut, and with the second, Charles Dickens.

Weird-
I typed the opening lines from A Tale of Two Cities and the web site said Dickens wrote like Edgar Allen Poe.

So then I typed in the opening lines from Poe's The Raven and it said Poe wrote like Nabokov.

When I entered my sample it said Margaret Mitchell- so Sue will you have room at your book signing for another Margaret?

I tried it twice. The first time was Stephen King and the second time was Chuck Palahniuk. I don't have a clue who he is!

Apparently I write like Cory Doctorow. That was the result twice, once using an entry from my blog and once an excerpt from a short story I wrote. The third time I went back to my blog, and this time it said I wrote like Chuck Palahniuk--who, according to Wikipedia, wrote Fight Club.

I'm getting the feeling we shouldn't take this too seriously. LOL

Mine first sample was David Foster Wallace and another sample this morning was Stephen King.
Maybe it knows I am doing some machete work today (weeds, not people).
There was an ad for King's books on Amazon under the results too. I think Amazon sponsors the site.

That site is ridiculous! I've gotten Stephen King, Chuck Norris, and James Joyce.

Yeah, I think it's pretty lame. I've gotten different names too. Quite a twist on "advertising". Who KNEW that Chuck Norris was a writer, JoAnn? That man does everything.... LOL!
