Well, How Did Your Day Go?

We had our dinner about 1:00. There were only 7 of us there as Mike's Mother and friend didn't come. Afterwards Cheryl, Amber and I decided to go back to the barn sale. This time she had brand new night shirts, the silky kind for $.50 each. Guess who is now going to clean out the jammy drawer! I didn't bring any leftovers home with me.

I took a good nap, had some sandwich spread for my supper. Hubby already had gotten into the pie and didn't want anything. I have been reading so maybe soon I will go to bed. It will soon be ten and I am not hearing any fireworks! I hope all of you had a good day.

We went to our son's house and helped him work on it. It's been a rental for two years, but now he is moving into it and his girlfriend and two friends are as well. It's a 6 bedroom house. Anyway, we've been working away on it, and it's coming right along. After we came home, I did some stuff outside and then walked the dogs. Then I talked to a couple of friends. Now I'm just sitting here with DH...

Went to WalMart to pick up odds and ends for upcoming trip.

I read that you had your furnace fixed. For future reference, if your furnace is gas - and is - for the sake of argument - 5 years old or thereabouts, there is a sensor in the furnace that accumulates dust/dirt and that must be cleaned by a technician. This happens despite annual cleanings of the furnace. The first time it happened to us we thought we had switched on the air conditioning. The repair man told us it is a problem with all of the newer furnaces. The fast, but temporary fix, is to turn the thermostat all the way down - and then back up high again - but not to turn the furnace on. But you only get so many successful heat returns this way. This has happened to us twice - and to many others this year in the Toronto area - all with furnaces about our "age". Three weeks ago we thought it was happening again and I was up all night doing the turn down/turn up bit because it was freezing cold here and I was concerned about the pipes. The service man came, but of course just after I had finally got the down/up working again - but while he saw a bit of build-up on the sensor he didn't think that was the problem. He showed us a small, rather opaque looking circle on the furnace and told us that when it happened again, to start counting the flashes - and keep note of the times it happened - also if the flashes were say 9 fast, 3 slow etc. So we did this for 2 days and finally the down and up wouldn't work. They sent a senior fellow with a new electrical board who said that it was unusual for this part to go on a furnace not quite 5. The part cost Cdn. $400 but was covered under warranty. We have a maintenance agreement with our gas provider for repairs only - but come Feb. 10 when furnace turns 5, warranty will expire. Feb. 9 we are switching back to maintenance PLUS - for the parts. I am watching the furnace carefully though because other people have had their electrical boards go this winter too - all on furnaces of our vintage - plus other parts as well - one person has had 2 replaced. One lady asked what had happened to furnaces that lasted 25 years - obviously a "young" person. In our old house, building in 1932, the oil furnace was still going strong in 2000. The gas furnace that was in our current house lasted 17 years (which we were told was now considered normal) - so it was about 7 when we moved in. I wonder if the current one will last 10. The air conditioner had to be replaced in spring 2007 - and replaced with a 14 Seer. People were making jokes as they passed by our small bungalow with the super giant 14 Seer in front of it. Well, they aren't laughing now, as many people on the street have had to have their units replaced. I hope that you don't have any further furnace problems.

I'm sorry to hear all that Azzalea. I hope things are getting better. We had a beautiful day here. I slept in until 8 (although Gary was up early as usual), then I made brownies (which I decorated with pink and yellow easter eggs (designed in decorator frosting) and jelly beans plus mixed up my corn casserole to take for dinner at my sister in law's house. Then we walked to Easter Services at a small church just a block from home. We enjoyed the church and the services tremendously and plan to go back this coming Sunday. I don't know why we've never stopped in there before, during the 10 months we've lived here. There are two of these little churches near us. This one only one block and the other only two blocks from our home. After that, it was time to take the dogs on a nice long walk (did I mention it was a warm sunny day) and then pack up to go for dinner, which was at 3 pm. Although most of the yards here in town are still under several inches of snow, we did walk by one yard where crocus were blooming up by the front door. What a pretty sign of spring! We stopped at Walmart on the way, wanting to pick up an Easter Lily for Gary's mom, but the few they had left were pretty sad looking so we ended up with a pot of tulips instead. Just one pretty red tulip was opened and there were a dozen buds so they will last her a while, then she can plant them in the yard. We stopped by her house for a few minutes and then went on to his sister's for dinner. Spent a couple of enjoyable hours there, then stopped back at his mom's again to check on the sump pump in the basement. The hose had come unhooked so the pump was working but no water flowing and there was a foot of water standing down there. This is an old house with a primitive basement and it's like that every spring, so nothing new there. Gary was able to wade in and get it going ok. After that, we drove around for a while 'out in the bush' as Gary calls it. Just enjoying seeing the snow and the ice on Lake Superior melt. There's not much growing out there yet, but we saw a few deer and the birch and aspen trees are lovely (even bare) with all that pretty white bark. Then it was home for another walk with the puppies and a couple of hours of tv before bedtime. All in all a lovely day!

Update! I have caught the little rascal. I went near the front door and called for kitty, kitty, and finally Izzi heard it. I tied her outside and went into my library that is a mess and hiding under on a shelf of a little printer cart was this tiger cat. I knew at once whose cat it was! It is son in law's tom. I called Mike and asked if Tom scratched or anything if you picked him up and he said no he never had him, so I called again to Tom and was able to pick him up and out the door he went. Tom came to their home some months back and is an outside cat. We are a half mile from them. So glad I was able to catch him and it wasn't one of the wild cats that are around here. Now lets see what the rest of the day brings :) Sue

Just the three of us here today. DS and I went to a daylily farm this morning, then we all took a nap, then cooked out on the grill for supper. DS and his buddy went to see fireworks. I'm going to bed!!

Went just fine, did laundry and very little else. I sure am getting lazy. I have so many little jobs started and never seem to get to them.

It was a nice day. David and I finished staining the wood for the quilt frame he is making for me. Tomorrow we will get it all together! It is gorgeous!!! Finally, I will have a floor frame to quilt on. Now.....pray that I can put a quilt in the frame. It is a no bast frame.....I have written directions but we all know how that goes! LOL
Tomorrow I will also pick out the quilt top that I will quilt. That should be fun! Mama left me so many tops to finish....I will love quilting each one of them thinking of her with each stitch.

Great day. Was up early and worked on painting the railings on the back deck. Still have a ways to go, but it's starting to shape up. Was gray, weathered wood, I'm painting them white. Will do the floor with non-skid gray once I get the railings finished.

Then, this afternoon, we were invited to a wedding reception at a cabin on a river. The couple actually got married last weekend, this was the groom's family's reception for them to introduce their new DIL to their local friends. Great time--they had the event catered by Famous Dave's. Weather was glorious--in the 70's with a nice breeze that kept the bugs away. Saw a couple of humming birds at their feeders. Delicious spread, great company, and just a lovely day.

This evening, once we got home, we watched the town's fireworks from the front yard, while we visited with some of the neighbors.

We went to a big fireworks display at a nearby village/resort (you have to get tickets to attend), got some great seats and sat around for 3 hours. When it was time for the fireworks to start we had a enormous downpour of rain. Thunder, lightening.. the whole nine yards. DH ran to the car when it started. I thought it would stop, but it only got worse... so I had to drag the cooler, my chair and an umbrella back to the car... got soaked. Made it home just in time for our subdivision fireworks... so it wasn't a total loss.

There are still fireworks going off... our poor dog is scared to go outside.

It was quiet here too. My DD and SIL had a big cookout for his family and of course invited us but we don't know his family well and thought it best to just hang out the two of us. It rained all day so our local fireworks were postponed. Instead of grilling we went to our favorite Chinese restaurant and then came home and watched DVD Nite at the Smithsonian. Absolutely hilarious. Looking forward to the second movie which isn't out on DVD yet. Then watched the PBS special from Washington and then later the Boston pops concert with Neil Diamond. Don't need anymore fireworks until the big display in Cincinnati on Labor day.
Hope everyone's Fourth was special to each in their way. I too have so many thoughts of when my DD and DS were little and we had BBQs and hayrides etc for all our friends. We're all older and more settled but I love my memories.

We cooked out--steak, baked potato, corn-on-the-cob and I made peach ice cream. I swear I could've eaten the whole 1/2 gallon. Highlight of my day was a nap! LOL!
