Wild Black Raspberries, a bumper crop (pics)

They're small and seedy; even when we've had plenty of rain like this year.

If the thorns don't get you the mosquitoes will.

It takes forever to get a bowl full.

But, when you do it's sooo worth the effort.

I'm drooling!! When I lived in Texas, we used to go dewberry picking. How I remember those days. Lately I have been buying thornless berry bushes, I haven't forgotten the scratches from the thorns, oh, those many years ago!

Nice photos! Ours were ripe 3 weeks ago & we had lots more this year than is typical. We froze some & I made a nice big pie. Yummy. (Love the pic with ice cream.)
Our wild blackberries are now ripening. I prefer them over the rasp's.

I was away for a bit, Well so far only the wild black mixed with domestic black. It was a huge batch, so waiting to make anymore till it's gone. My son said it was the best he ever tasted. I think the yellow taste different in jam than the red. On the reds I keep them all together, so cultivars are mixed. I usually don't make any jam out of the reds. I cook with them I do plan on making yellow raspberry jam, and jam out of double gold as they look different from all others. I'm going to need some from the fall crop to have enough. Many of my raspberries for the summer crop went to my daughter whom harvested them while I was on vacation. They peaked in production while I was gone, so she got as many as in the photo. My kids are 32 and 28 and no longer live with me. Anyway I was thinking one could make a raspberry jam set of black, yellow, red, and Double Gold. Which are kind of pink/orange. I never separated the reds for different tastes. And one could add purple and orange to the above. Yellow caps (yellow black raspberries) may taste way different too.

Nice to be able to report good news here, my recent plantings have really taken off, Autumn Britten this years bare root plant from Raintree was planted at the end of April and it's a beast of a plant with several long canes with lot's of berries, def needs support as it grows up and out at the same time.....every berry plant has it's own personalty.....my Josephine has canes at least 7 feet long and supported by plastic wire on my trellis system, very heavy from weight of future berries and many......Nantahala is finally putting out fruit buds now, nothing from Double Gold or Crimson Giant but very healthy vigorous growth, Prelude another spring planting has several canes about 7 feet tall needing a mini trellis because of all the future berries and lot's, this is suppose to be a summer variety with bonus Fall Crop but mine has exploded growthwise and it has berries all over the place, not just the tips and it's still growing a great addition....both my Fall Gold and Kiwi Gold spring plantings are doing amazing with several healthy canes and suckers coming up, i may have an overlapping summer/Fall harvest on one Kiwi gold as the Fall crop is almost ready and summer crop is still not done, that's a great plant too and very tasty...,My Polka spring plantings are almost ready to deliver a small Fall Crop as the plants didn't grow all that much but healthy....Caroline failed to fruit as a late spring planting, neither did Jaclyn or my Heritage, but i'm told it's normal for a young plant not to fruit for 2 years. Here's a pic of my Autumn Britten's Fall Crop .... my one plant which is all need of this variety as it's very vigorous and has many berries on the top third of it's canes and then some this year is about experimenting with growth characteristics, productivity,disease resistance, root rot & how much suckering each variety offers and most importantly TASTE ! Very little, if any support needed. If you need some, a stake would work! . Keep in touch, as I have seeds of a cross of Niwot with another black raspberry that produces a decent tasting fall crop. Pete Tallman gave me seeds, the breeder of Niwot. But I have not grown out seeds. It's not easy to grow out bramble seeds. I need to practice before I try on these important seeds. So it will be a couple years. I will try next winter. They remain frozen till then. I'm working on my technique right now. Scarification time is what I need to work out. How long in sulfuric acid? I have seeds with varying amounts of time in the acid. See what germinates best. Seed from my own plants. Two stages of stratification too, room temp,and at about 40F. Again not easy to get seeds to germinate!

I have those growing all over my neighbourhood wild and in the next town. Some are in front of people's houses, there's some by the train tracks, just about everywhere and no one seems to care about them as much as I do. They are black raspberries pretty much all over near me, but the yellow ones were a surprise. I didn't know they existed until I saw them by the train track. I thought they weren't ripe yet, but they are wonderful! They are also in front of some guy's house with black ones, so perhaps it is a mutation. How long do they take to ripen? I can't wait any longer. I want to eat those berries. I wonder if it's possible to grow them on my apartment deck... There's also some berries that aren't black berries but something else. They are sour. I don't like them and there are black berries behind the supermarket.

Oh, Yum!!! We used to have a large raspberry patch. At one time I had a hundred pints of them luscious things frozen in the freezer. Hubs likes his bowl of ice cream with raspberries every night. Now I have to buy them and fresh or frozen they are expensive. Ron, enjoy!!

I agree, Ron. I adore black raspberries that my father grew in our back garden patch. They are so flavorful. Just a little sugar and some half and half over them--YUM! People out here in California don't even know what I am talking about and think I mean blackberries. No way is there any comparison!

Mine are small and seedy, too. They did not winter well this year. And then, I noticed that I was getting much less thatn expected even accounting for the sparcity bearing canes. And then I saw why.

The starlings have fledged and are now roaming the country side in groups of 10 or more. In mid afternoon, a pod of starlings swooped onto my backyard and started gazing for bugs. I thought, great! I knew starlings go after specfic bugs and catapillars and they do a good job of cleaning out an infestation, and then I spied something jumping into the raspberry busy. The cane shook as the bird busied itself while trying to avoid the thorns. A couple of starlings were filling up on raspberries.

I love wild berries but hate the thorns. When we moved into our home in 1981, the prior owner had some wild berries growing along the fence. I liked picking them, but DH kept getting snagged and scratched, so he tore them out. Lord, I miss those berries!

I have 4 black raspberry plants in our front garden that I didn't plant. Someone around here must have one because it seems like they must have been planted by the birds. They too are small and seedy but the kids love them.

Nice!! We used to grow them, but now I keep an eye on the wild ones on the property and try to beat the birds to them. (The birds usually win.)

One of my many fond memories of the Yale reunion I went to a couple of years ago was the brunch with a giant serving bowl of big, fat, red raspberries.
