Are there any places still in operation where these are necessary? Personally, I think they were doomed when bucket seats became the rage in cars.

There's a place not too far from me that has them and are used on weekends.

and that's why we bought this house when we moved to mi...and wouldn't you know by the time we had moved in the movie place was gone and they'd built a target, sigh...

they have built one on the gounds of the old lions stadium, but it's pretty $$ and almost a 30 minute drive...

I grew up within 5 miles of the first drive-in.

My dad was a projectionist at one when I was in high school. I got in free as did anyone who was with me. Guess where my dates wanted to go? And not always because of the usual reasons a young man wanted to take a young lady there..........I was a cheap date, LOL!

I remember, as a little kid, wearing my jammies, and falling asleep in in the car.

I remember, when in high school, it was declared "forbidden territory" by my parents.

Brings back memories. Fun times. People used to go to the concession stand that was in the middle of the lot, during intermission.

We have two within 10 miles of us. I worked in the concession stand, when I was in high school. Some 50 plus years ago. Last show I saw in one, was the original Star Wars.

Yep, I've driven off with a one attached to my door, but it didn't take me long to realize what was happening, so avoided any damage - gee, it's been a while since I've seen one of these!

OOOooohhh yesss! That brings up OLD memories dating back to the 50s and 60s.

I remember the first time I attended a drive-in. I was in high school and my sister and I went with a friend to the drive-in on Friday night. He had a yellow '32 Ford Roadster Convertible with a flat head V8 and suicide doors - Shades of Archie Comic books. Engine power was in the neighborhood of 60 HP. It was a 2 seater with a rumble seat. Guess who got the rumble seat - yeah me. Sister got the front seat and benefit of the wind screen and whatever other niceties provided by the driver.

He rarely ever put the top up. Maybe it was in tatters. He said that if you went fast enough, the air stream over the wind screen would keep rain from falling into the cockpit.

By the time the movie was over, the night had cooled and I about froze to death on the way home. I did not imagine that the runble seat could be so cold on a late summer night. I was about ready to crawl into the trunk and fold the seat down. Of course, I'd been trapped if the trunk lid latched.

There wasn't much to hold you in when riding rumble seat. One did not cavort around, but stayed glued to the seat else a big bump in the road might launch you out and you'd find yourself bumping down the highway on your rear if you were lucky.

Yes - memories and I wonder why I survived my teenage days.

When we lived near Houston a year ago, there was a new drive-in. No speakers to hook on your car window and then pull off accidentally when you drove away. It is wi-fi to your car radio.

I can see a whole documentary in my head. First dates, double dates, girlfriend nights, place my friends took me to tell me some devastating news night,carloads with me in the trunk LOL.

We still have one but it's modern. Last time I went was with DD and her friends when she was 2003. We brought lawn chairs and had a party. I remember the year because we saw Finding Nemo.

First time at the drive in was also my first official car date. Had a bit of a crush on the guy who was my brother's friend. When he tried to kiss me with open mouth it kind of turned me off. Kind of ended my crush on him too. LOL The movie was Dr. No.

What memories. Fun, more innocent times.

Before I even got a chance to go to a drive-in, they were done away with. So, I can guess what it is from everyone's comments but have not actually seen one. What a shame.

ahhhhhhh, the memories. we have one within about 10 miles but the sound comes through the radio in the car instead of speakers. we were just there two weeks ago. saw spiderman and men in black 3. ;)

They ABSOLUTELY still exist--I just wish I could stay awake that late to renew old memories!! Back in the day we would watch the Trinity "cowboy" trilogy and laugh our heads off!!

Another who remembers. We still have a drive-in in our town, but none of 'those'--you use your car radio to tune into the sound track.

When we were kids, going down the shore, we always knew what dad was going to surprise us with a trip to the drive-in. We only went Friday night (I imagine that was probably buck a car night). We'd get to our shore house, have a rather hurried dinner, and he'd pack us all back into the car without telling us where we were going. Then he'd make a stop at the grocery store. We'd be sitting in the back seat, nudging each other mouthing things like, "We're going to the drive-in". You didn't dare speak the words out loud, for fear the grownups would change their minds--LOL. And off we'd go to the mainland, to see whatever Disney movie had finally made it to the drive-in. Of course, today, you're not allowed to take food into the one near me--you have to take out (and pay for) a 'food permit' to bring in outside food. Which, financially, I guess I can understand--they don't make anything on admission, the profits all come from the concession stand.

I remember them really well. I am 60 years old. I grew up on a farm and only got off the farm to go to a one room country school or toe church or catechism for church. Maybe once a year before school started we got to go along to Bismarck. But even then it was just sitting in the car a lot while day bought machinery parts and things for the farm. THey would buy a package of weiners or cold cuts and a loaf of bread and that was our dinner. I just told my husband that I never went to a restarant until I was about 14 years old I think. That was because some of us kids had helped the homemakers club my mother belonged to and they took us out for supper. Times sure have changed.

Anyhow now for the picture. SO what I am saying I led a very sheltered life. After I met my husband to be we went to a lot of movies. I had never been to a drive-in before. I was really excited and when we got in there I said "what are these HItching Posts" He still likes to tell peoople about it and how naive I was. I don't remember what I had meant to say anymore but he sure got a laugh our of it. I remember goint to the DUSK TO DAWN nights. I don't think I ever stayed awake for all 4 of the movies though. At one of themO remember my DH sister had fallen asleep and she sat up and said "Just put it down" It was funny because they were having a sword fight and right after she said that he dropped his sword. It was like he listened to her/
