Comments (2)In Virginia, samples go to Virginia Tech in Blacksburg; the Extension service puts out their little boxes & instruction sheets. The fee is about $10, and on the sheet you indicate what you're growing-- both grass and roses have boxes on the checklist. This area is well known for having acid soils, & we DO at the arboretum where I work. But here at the house the soil is NEUTRAL much to my surprise! Comments (6)Hi Bonnie, Went out to get my vigna to take an updated picture, but the batteries on my camera are low, rats! Here's a picture from before so hopefully you will be able to see that the leaves look different than your two plants. The leaves on the vigna are sort of thin, not thick, and the stems are smooth, green and very flexible. Also, noted the each 'branch' has a grouping of three leaves. Comments (21)Im new to canning and food preservation. So much information..".to trust or not to trust." Yet even though I hear the bottom line is to trust only the approved testing, I find that I still have questions and have a hard time trusting my end product simply because of the possibility of human error. I read that there is a field test similar to a home pregnancy test that they use to detect botulinum in 20 minutes. Has this been made available to the public and if not, why? It's a great business plan if someone can come up with the science behind it. And Ill buy it. Home testing might also make it possible for others to continue testing since the government quit. But while we're waiting for that, I would like for someone to clarify some information. I know botulinum is the bacteria which produce the toxin (gases) that can hurt us. The bacteria die at a certain temp for a certain time. I have heard some people suggest to boil a home-canned product thoroughly after opening/before eating it to kill the bacteria, but this seems insufficient as the toxins would still be present. It is not the live bacteria that are toxic but the gases that they produce. Also the bacteria die when exposed to oxygen. Does boiling somehow neutralize toxins? Or is this just false information? Lastly, since bacteria produce gases, is it safe to conclude that jars tainted with bacteria would definitely have some outward visible signs of contamination? I know that other bacteria can infect food, but in my short studies I have been led to believe that botulinum is the hardest to kill. Comments (4)I thought that mulch usually tied up the nitrogen in the soil, or depleted it. Anyway, I always, at the very minimum, top dress my beds with chicken manure every year, and several times throughout the spring, summer, and fall (not too late in fall, tho). I was wondering about the microbial action and whether Hu-more actually was effective in contributing to that environment or not. I have some good soil in my yard, and I also have some bad. Most of the bad soil is under trees where the soil is so compacted, that I would have to use a bulldozer to break it up. It's like concrete. But, my violets will grow there, and I have a raised bed there. Yeah, I was just kidding about the compost, ya know! Thanks for the help! Now, I just need to get out tomorrow and finish planting and potting up. I am doing more pots this year because they are easier for me to keep track of, and also because it is easier on my back than digging new beds everywhere. I use them for annuals and very cold hardy perennials that I know will overwinter in them.
