I learned the tip to roll everything years ago. It works.

A 30" suitcase may or may not exceed the weight limit. It depends on what and how much you put in it.

Weigh the packed suitcase before you go and remove things if it exceeds the limit.

So do you roll everything?

I roll my slacks and knit tops/T-shirts. It really does work. I don't think you'll exceed the weight limit. But weigh it first like dilly dally said.

Glenda- Did the tour company give you the weight limit? My brother just came back from Ireland and he told me that the airlines flying inside Ireland have a lower weight requirement than USAir did. He was flying from Dublin to Shannon and had to repack his suitcase at the airport and put some of his things inside his son's suitcase.

Yes..when my son went to Spain that is how we packed his bag, roll everything, kind of roll tight. To help not exceed weight don't forget to add some clothing changes to your carry on...Also do not pack in checked bags any essentials, such as medication and important paperwork bring in carry on.

Us a money belt (or neck kind), keep all money and passport with you at all times...may be more of a problem in Spain and that area for pick pockets, but maybe not. I would get a Dr.s statement for any medication there may be any issue with.

The travel agency (went with other students from high school with a travel company) suggested Travelers Checks,but, my son had problems finding a place to cash them, used the ATM mostly.

I told my son to throw away tube socks if he needs room in bag to bring things home. Also purchased inexpensive shirts at thrift store so if he leaves behind it won't be so bad.

I have all that for the passport, etc. We were told not to use Travelers checks, but our credit cards. already called the card company so they are aware I will be using it internationally. He even told me to write down the toll free number, put it somewhere else besides with my card, in case my card is lost.

Ok, so I think my 30 inch suitcase will be ok.
And I will roll!

I won't be flying inside Ireland. Tour company is Brendan, and will be riding a bus for both Scotland and Ireland. That was a request from them to take only ONE suitcase.

I roll up our clothes--not underwear, just tops and pants. It's amazing that they don't wrinkle, but then I don't take anything linen or 100% cotton. I lay tops down and fold the sleeves back, the start rolling from the neckline down, straigthening out folds if there are any, as I go along. I don't roll really tight. It not only helps prevent wrinkles, but saves a lot of luggage space.

I'm sure you know this because you travel so much, but you can wear the same dark-colored or khaki pants more than once.

Couple of capri's are 100 percent cotton.

You could roll up a sweater and then roll the cotton capris around them, or you could put your underthings together and then roll the capris around them. You just don't want to roll them tightly.

You can buy a suitcase weighing thingy (please excuse the technical description ;) ) that you hook on to your suitcase and then lift it to weigh it. Then pack it in your suitcase before you lock it. My sister has one and she is amazed how accurate it is. It is called a Heys Xscale. She got hers on the Shopping Channel but you can buy them online. This is a Canadian product but I am sure that there is a similar one available in the US. Check your local travel store or maybe even Walmart, who knows. Here is the website www.heys.ca/xscale

Oh I forgot about them. You can get one on Amazon for as low as $10 or so. I have one from - it's the Travelon Stop and Lock Luggage Scale. It's small and also has a tape measurer.

Glenda, is your suitcase a softside or hard suitcase. I use nothing but softside cases, a 30 inch and never have
a weight problem because the suitcase is so light.

Oh, for a small light weight scale, try fish scales, like from bass pro. I love those. Use it to weigh all kinds of things. :)

But, honest, I would pack my case, and go to the Dr. Their scales should work, and you don't have to try and pick it up to weigh it.

Every time I go I intend to roll, but change my mind for some reason??? I will do it this time. You need to go online and check the limits for your airline, they vary a little. They also will not allow an over night bag and a very large purse, limits on it also. 30 inches may exceed the allowed size. I am leaving for London Weds and bought Eddie Bouer 100% polyester slacks so I can wash them, they will dry by the next day. I will pack a lot of knit tops and a couple of long sleeved over shirts. I would like to get by with one 26 inch, but don't know if I can, I usually take 2. We are allowed two suitcases. I find that you can pack as much in a 26 inch expandable suitcase as you can a 28/30 inch ones because of the weight limit. They can charge $60 to $100 for the wrong size and weight. I also put a colored strap around mine so if they zipper fails, my clothes will not be scattered every where.

i always roll everything and infact layer things like underwear, tees, tops, pants and then roll multiple things together. i usually only wear linen and cottons and i layer cotton capri's w/ soft tees then roll. i don't have much of an issue w/ wrinkles, i do hang things as soon as i arrive somewhere and will spritz and run a hot hairdryer over things if needed.

i have been caught several times w/ airlines w/ bags over the limit. if i'm close i remove items into my carry-on (my purse go in too) which i pack light just in case. i can't imagine just taking 1 bag OMG i'd spend a fortune shipping my shopping back to the US lol. i have had to buy a new piece of luggage atleast 5 times while on vacation because i bought too much for my luggage lol, this is my solution to avoiding paying $100 for being over 50lbs per bag. ~ liz

Bring the packed suitcase to to Publix. They have a big scale in the lobby of every store!

Go to the Dollar store and get a box of 30-gallon trash bags. Lay a bag out on the bed, lay your article of clothing in the middle of the bag and start rolling. It not only prevents wrinkles but gives you something to bring stuff home in.

Just went to US Air, and my 30 inch is fine. 51 lbs you start to pay overage.

That's what the travel agent said last nite, 50 lb limit.

I have always rolled my clothes when travelling.

Glenda, if you are just bringing clothes and a pair or two of shoes I don't think you will exceed the 50 lb limit. Just bring enough toiletries for the cruise because most hotels will supply the shampoos and soaps. Just make sure you leave enough room to bring back whatever you are going to buy.

I shopped a lot when I first started traveling in 1996, but don't do that anymore. I have enough souvenirs and I don't usually buy clothes on a trip. I like to shop at home where I can take things back. I save my extra money for more travel.

I always roll and then unpack when I arrive. Seems like I can get more in the bag. If your tour is like ours, just unpack what you will use at that stop.
