Kitchen Storage Goes on a Roll
Rolling cabinets and mobile islands make quick work of kitchen prep and pull double duty when guests arrive
When it comes to kitchens large or small, there are times when we could all use more space to work, move, store — you name it. Creative solutions to managing our various kitchen needs are essential to maintaining a sense of order. Rolling elements may be the answer, especially if you want to the flexibility of wheeling your auxiliary kitchen components to other areas of your workspace and even dining area for the ultimate in clever kitchen functionality.
It sounds so simple, but so few of us think of it: make one base cabinet a rolling element, with a built-in chopping-block top for at-your-service accessibility. This is a great idea for small kitchens and large alike. If you don't like the look of casters, have your cabinetmaker conceal the wheels with a plinth for a completely inconspicuous solution.
If you don't mind seeing casters, then by all means, expose away. This design showcases the same idea but celebrates the notion of moving parts and makes the rolling unit feel a little special.
A mobile island is certainly nothing new, but integrating it with the rest of the kitchen's look and making it appear more sturdy and permanent is definitely a notable design decision. I love that this island on wheels is adorned with the same paneling and marble top as the fixed cabinets.
There's nothing wrong with wheeling in an island with a little contrast, though. This one is sort of a happy medium. While it isn't an exact match to the fixed cabinets, it repeats the materials used in the rest of the kitchen, making it a well-integrated addition. The supplementary work surface is further utilized by adding counter stools for extra seating.
For a party, roll the island out to where the action is and make it the bar with additional seating to keep guests from gathering in the kitchen.

Make accessing things in hard-to-reach places infinitely easier with a rolling ladder.
And now for a little Ikea love. This design (and so many others) is achievable with elements you likely already have or have easy access to. But the rolling cart gives the space added flexibility: it can serve as auxiliary storage, a work surface, a mobile bar — you name it.
I adore this farmhouse-style rolling island, which looks like a well-loved and well-worn piece of furniture. The rusticated red legs (an easyish DIY project) work beautifully with the amazing stove and the checkerboard-pattern backsplash. I especially like the contrast created by the vintage-looking rugs.
A little styling prowess can turn the most mundane of rolling carts into a chic mobile bar. This cart would be an easy addition to almost any kitchen setup, but if yours is outfitted in white with stainless steel appliances, it would be an especially seamless fit. If space is limited but you like to entertain, keep some chic folding chairs on hand and bust them out for impromptu dinner parties around the rolling bar.
