I'm wondering about posts on this site

I've seen this happen several times and wondered how it happens. A post is put on this site, and stays at the top of the page, for quite a few hours and I've seen it stay there for a day or two......even though there are no responses. I've put in a post a few times that was obviously to no ones interest, and it moves down to the bottom and into the next page. Not complaining, just curious.

The way this site works is that a post stays at the top until there is a response to it. Then, it moves its way down the page as posts with newer responses move above it.

forhgtv is correct, a post stays on top until someone posts a reply, at which time it starts moving down and new posts come in, however if there is a successive post as it is moving down it will pop back up to the top, then once again begins moving down as new posts come in, but each successive new post will once again bring it to the top

Well, you've learned one lesson: Don't ever register your domain through your host. It's a pain in the behind if you want to transfer it. I always recommend to people that you use a plain old domain registrar like gkg.net or godaddy.net (I prefer gkg.net myself). You can then point the domain to wherever you eventually host the site. Lesson two would be, do your research when getting a webhost. There are lots of bad ones out there. And plenty of good ones. The problem is finding "real" reviews of hosts (a lot of the review sites have fake reviews on them). I use www.webhostingtalk.com as a resource a lot, and search there on any potential hosts that I'm considering -- you generally get the straight scoop from people posting there. Lesson three: you get what you pay for. $2.00 a month web hosting is...well, frankly, a joke. That's probably why they get generally poor reviews. To get decent service, customer support, etc., you really need to be paying somewhere in the $8.00 - $15.00 a month range for shared hosting for a basic site, IMO. As for what to do now -- personally, I would try to move away from this host. I did a search on 1and1.com on the forum I mentioned above, and they seemed to be a pretty mixed bag as far as reviews. You can definitely do better than that. There is NO reason they should fight you on letting you take your domain with you -- you just need to be very upfront, and don't take any crap from them. On the other hand, if you don't want to deal with the mess of trying to move, you can try them for a while, and see how it goes. Some people do seem to like them just fine. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones!

The other night one of the regulars admitted that they just flagged anything they did not like. While supposedly it takes two flags to remove a comment last Friday it seemed like a post was barely there and it was gone. Currently there is a lag time between my hitting submit and my comments being posted. I am suspecting I am on the bad list as back when I worked at a certain place when people were being monitored there was also a delay. HT is not the discussion group that it was before about late 2015 and is more like a bunch of hounds baying at a fox sometimes.

No, there is a time limit as to how long it stays at the top, without a reply. It seems to me it's 24 hours or so. I saw this quite a bit on the kitchens forum when I used to visit regularly.

Dotmom, if your post even had one reply it starts to move down. If it had no replies, it should have stayed at the top for a while--however long it is.

Do you think your posts had no replies and started to scroll down right away? I don't think that could happen.

Not right away but some seem to stay on top much longer than others, I have noticed that too if that is what you are referring to, Dotmom. Just recently one stayed there for almost 2 days, others moved down after a few hours it seemed.

Socks, it has been a while since that happened with my post. I think it was probably a day or less.
Like I said, no biggy, I was just curious.

I think it does, in fact, move down without a reply but, it's more than 24 hours. There is an informational post on the antiques forum with instructions on how to post a picture that has been there longer. I just don't know how long it remains at the top before moving down.

I assumed it was a set time period...like 24 hrs but it may have something to do with site traffic.. like after 50 posts on other posts it will move down or something like that.. not sure.

Jannie,,,you will also see that sometimes when ppl are posting an illegal advertisement someone will just input the word ....Spam

That is not only telling everyone it is a spam ad, it also causes that ad to start moving down.

As your post moves down, if someone else adds a post it will move back to the top of the list, then show up under the last item on the top of the list that has not had a response.
