I'm back - had a wonderful time in India

I had a wonderful 5 weeks in India. For 2 weeks of that time I stayed in three private homes with friends and got to see some of India from the inside.

Thank you, everyone who encouraged me to do this - I really needed this holiday, both to take a break from my routine and to get time to think about my choices and the future.

I never got round to making a travel blog in English, because my journal and the blog I used to allow friends and family in Iceland keep track of me was enough work. However, for those who are interested, I am in the process of going through my photos and will be posting them on my blog, accompanied by text in both languages. I will post the link on this thread when I start posting the photos.

I made it into the third round of interviews and exams for a job with the Icelandic foreign ministry, and am now waiting for the results of the final interview, so good vibes will be appreciated :-)

Sounds like you had a wonderful time Netla. How lucky you were to be able to stay in private homes.

Good luck with the job interview. I can imagine how excited you must be. It would be a dream job I imagine!

Welcome back, Theresa! It seems that treacherous weather touches someone we know more often than we might think. Glad you are recovering from the tornado spree of the fall. It makes one think how tenuous life can be. Another point to add about what a small planet we live on in regards to disasters. Last spring I began getting emails from a gardener in the Philippines. She wanted some seed from my star jasmine to grow in her garden. I had plenty of seed, but they were not yet ripe and ready to pick and mail to her. Then came the typhoon which devastated the Philippines. And while I've emailed her to see how she fared, there has been no reply so far. Let's hope she was not among those who died. Routine services such as Internet access can be knocked out for a long time. I'm hoping that is the extent of it. For those who have families in disaster areas, it is a lot more devastating, waiting for word. So yes, Theresa, I'm glad you are safe and sound.

Wow Jane, I am tired just reading about what all you did! Sounds like a wonderful time and lots of work and effort on your part. What a large group to entertain! So nice that your DH helps you with the decorating. Mine does not help with the inside at all. I carry everything up from the basement including the trees, all the boxes, ladders, etc. The only thing he does outside is put a blow mold Santa on our mailbox, although this year, he did run an extension cord from the backyard for some of the lights as they kept tripping the breaker this year! Again, getting everything down out of the rafters, off of the shelves, and put up is up to me! Sorry, I just needed to vent a little. I get a bit envious when I hear of other DH's that help with decorating. Anyway, looking forward to your pix. TFS, Candy

Welcome back April. I am glad to see you have done some more homework. I own Carrier Infinity equipment, so I know it will keep you comfortable in the cold Michigan winters. I have heard mixed opinions about Lennox, but I have no direct experience. I am going assume Contractor #3 is a competent installer and he has sized your equipment properly. I am glad to see he is offering the Carrier rebates. Here are my comments for the Contractor #3 options: Furnaces: Option 1: I would not recommend an 80% AFUE furnace for your winters. Option 2: This is the two-stage Infinity furnace. It is a good furace and will work with the Infinity controller. Option 3: For $300 more you get a three-stage furnace. This would be my recommendation with the Infinity controller. Air Conditioning: Option 1: This is a single stage compressor. I think 4 tons is oversized for your climate. Option 2: This is the two-stage compressor. This is the AC to get if you have humid summers. This AC will work with the Infinity controller. I believe this AC with the 58MVC furnace will qualify for the $1000 Carrier rebate. Option 3: This AC in my opinion is over kill for your climate. It is not worth the money. Ask contractor #3 how much a 10 Carrier labor warranty would cost. You should consider getting this warranty for peace of mind for the next 10 years. I would also want to upgrade to a 4 inch media filter. This should not be a costly upgrade assuming you have to room to fit it. You should also qualify for the $500 tax credit if you haven't already used it.

Wait until you've gone through a plague of locusts. I've lived through a few 17 year cicada hatches in my lifetime. Not as bad as some of you have described but the sound of them singing was deafening some nights. Still, that was part of growing up in the South so we never knew any different. Still, the cicadas didn't really bother plants, to my knowledge. It was the grasshopper (locust) hatchouts that did that. Rhonda, I can't believe what you're saying about the mayflies and the plows. Wow. And I thought FL had bug problems! The closest I've seen to that is when we had a bad red tide and they had to bring in front end loaders to get all the dead fish and seaweed off the beaches.

Oh, yes! I will be watching for photos, too! How cool that you got to stay with families. You really do see a different side of the culture that way.

Also sending lots of good vibes for the outcome you are hoping for with the job interview! It's nice to hear that someone actually had an interview! LOL

Job market is tighter than I have ever experienced here! I am still searching, nearly a year later!

But the main thing that's missing from your post is -- the food?! How was the food in India? I'm drooling in anticipation of hearing about your favorite meals...
